Can I wear this to a funeral?

this with this ??

Please say yes Confused . It's not actually a funeral but a 'service of thanksgiving' after the cremation. FWIW it's my d step gms funeral. I have absolutely nothing to wear that isn't bright and light and my DM tells me purple is funereal Hmm . We haven't been explicitly told to wear black or anything specific. If the weather is cold I have a very dark sombre wintery dress but it's if it's mild this is my only real option but I'm useless on these things so need some advice as to if it's acceptable or too cheery please.

I don't know, I think I'd be inclined to ask what other people will be wearing. It would make a lovely outfit though and great for BBQ's if we have a summer!

reastie · 20/06/2012 15:18

lizzywig other than men wearing the usual suit, DM is wearing a black ensemble and my aunt a navy skirt and light top, that's all I know Confused . It is IMO a really nice outfit, I just don't know if it's funeral-ish enough IYKWIM. I don't mind wearing it myself but I don't want to think others thinking I'm being unthoughtful or unsuitable or whatever. If the weather isn't too warm I've got a nice smart dark purple cardi and shoes that would work well and maybe play down the brightness a bit Hmm [hopeful]

I think it's too summery for a funeral.

dexter73 · 20/06/2012 15:47

It looks more like a wedding/christening outfit rather than a funeral outfit. I think if the dress was plain it would have been ok.

Blush I think I agree but it's just I have nothing else really. I have a similar dress to that one but in a dark blue bit like this one . Would that be a bit more suitable or still too bright?

I would say no, sorry, unless you had specifically been asked to wear something cheerful. It's the bare flesh as much as the bright colours.

Whitershadeofpale · 20/06/2012 15:58

Do you have any skirts or trousers you could play down with a plain top or a cardi done up to make a jumper?

reastie · 20/06/2012 16:02

white no I don't Blush . I put on alot of weight post baby so all my old clothes don't fit me anymore, I have 6 dresses and some cardis I wear for work and jeans and tops for home but that's it.

lebof Thee wouldn't be that much bare flesh as the cardi covers my arms (and if it's not that hot I have a long sleeved cardi) and I'll wear a plain dark vest top under the dress so it's not too low cut.

The funeral I went to recently everyone wore black or dark colours with white shirts / blouses, there wasn't anything flowery / bright coloured. Your outfit would really stand out (some people don't mind that though). Nobody wore anything fancy - have you got a pair of plain trousers in a dark colour that you have for everyday wear that you could wear with a plain top and the shrug you linked to in your op. I think you may feel very uncomfortable if you wear what you linked to.

Whitershadeofpale · 20/06/2012 16:13

Are any of your long sleeve cardis in a colour that would work with that dress? If so I'd wear one done up over the top of the dress to tone down the colour.

If I'm honest I went to a scattering of ashes ceremony at a cemetary where one of the guests wore a maxi dress and everyone at the wake was talking about her. If you could I'd be tempted to pop into Primark buy a plain black or navy skirt and wear it with a tucked in vest top or t-shirt and cardi.

Casserole · 20/06/2012 16:13

What?? Bare shoulders and flowery dresses to a funeral? No WAY.

Go to Tesco and buy cheap dark trousers and a cheap dark tshirt. You could do it for a tenner.

reastie · 20/06/2012 16:49

casserole did you not see my second link - I have a cardi to keep said shoulders very much covered up.

plane the only trousers I have are jeans, and it's not as easy as buying any old cheap pair from a supermarket casserole as I have always had trouble with trousers fitting me - I think I have an odd shape Confused

I've shown DM my outfit....she says it's fine Hmm . Maybe in RL it looks less busy than the picture.

whiter yes I have a LS cardi which would work with the dress I can wear with it. It's a dark purple.

I now only have 1 day until the funeral and I'm not sure if I can get to the shops to buy anything

Whitershadeofpale · 20/06/2012 17:19

If you really can't get to the shops then I think that would be your best bet.

MrClaypole · 20/06/2012 17:26

Eek you cannot wear this to a funeral/ service.

It looks like you are going to the park or an informal wedding.

dexter73 · 20/06/2012 17:49

Well if you have nothing else and don't want to buy anything else then you are going to have to wear it!

reastie · 20/06/2012 17:52

Well dexter I can always hope for bad weather to wear my winter sombre dress I guess

reastie · 20/06/2012 18:44

Update that apparently my DGM hated black at funerals. I'm hoping this will make my dress more suitable

OP posts:
reastie · 20/06/2012 18:58

I also have this in bluebell retro rose - would this be more suitable? I only have a smart purple cardi to go with it though as the blue cardi I usually wear with it is quite old and worn looking.

OP posts:
Whitershadeofpale · 20/06/2012 20:10

I think the second one is better as the pattern is less overpowering.

Springforward · 20/06/2012 20:26

TBH I would think your dress and cardi ok, the main colour is quite dark, after all.
