What's the dress code for this Martha-Stewart-wet-dream Vermont wedding next week?

What would you wear? It's at 4.30pm (or half past four o'clock, as it says on the achingly tasteful invite). There's no dress code I can see. It just says 'dinner, dancing and celebration to follow', and am pretty sure it's going to be v v WASPy and tasteful.

So is it day-at-the-races? or slinky cocktail wear? Or is it Oscars night??

You could even kit yourself out with lace gloves, fans and parasols from the jolly old Emporium. Get over there - it's a treasure trove!

UnrequitedSkink · 21/06/2012 19:30

That Phase 8 dress is lovely. For the office. Nuff said.

UnrequitedSkink · 21/06/2012 19:34

What about this rather lovely teal silk dress?

ClaireBunting · 21/06/2012 19:37

Ascot minus the hat.

UnrequitedSkink · 21/06/2012 19:37

Ooh, no - loving this beaded flapper dress - only £60 too.

UnrequitedSkink · 21/06/2012 19:39

Or Ascot without the hat! Slightly bizarre (eccentric) print...

ThePathanKhansWitch · 21/06/2012 19:40

YY to the beaded dress. Beautiful.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 22/06/2012 13:42

Thank you for the suggestions, but am quite large of nork and the teal dress (thanks unrequited) might frighten the horses a bit Blush

Love the beaded dress by why don't they ever put the beading right the way round? Is my back not equally visible? This always shits me... and the Ascot dress is backless and therefore not for me (viz: large norks and need for architecture)

I think they don't put beading on the back as it would get damaged by sitting on it.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 22/06/2012 13:59

dexter I do not sit, I perch daintily Grin

Until I get drunk and then all bets are off

Are american weddings really that different from English ones? They are mostly NY and Connecticut folks, the happy couple are quite young and funky but there will be lots of older rellies there. I just can't get a handle on how it will be! Help!

The only good weddings I ever attended in the US were in Chicago. I think the secret to a rollicking American wedding is Irish, German, Wisconsin or Minnesota Scandinavian, or Polish-American families of the bride and groom. All the others I have attended have been 'achingly tasteful'.

hanahsaunt · 22/06/2012 16:18

I stopped at the hard lemonade bit - very intrigued! What may it be?

(Love the beaded dress).

mathanxiety · 22/06/2012 16:24

Lemonade spiked with a malt beverage.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 23/06/2012 15:21

math Shock I thought hard lemonade was a lemonade alcopop... dear god, lemonade + scotch/bourbon sounds .

But back to wedding kit... I'm think at last I'm getting the hang of what the dress code will be... thanks again math for saying 'cocktail outfit but not shiny and blingy'. I actually really like it as a dress code but it's fecking hard to get right. It's sort of day-at-the-races but no florals or frills, right?

The americans would say 'classic' or 'timeless' and we would possible say 'boring' or 'safe' but I kind of respect that... I do think we are too trend-driven sometimes.

Think simple... think Audrey (love her and all but she had no tits so not a good fashion model for meAngry... aaaaaand we're back to achingly tasteful againWine

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

mathanxiety · 24/06/2012 04:25

A brand of hard lemonade -- contains unflavoured malt liquor so all you taste is the lemonade.
