titanium wedding rings - any issues?

Hi! Getting married in August and we want v understated, simple, and inexpensive rings. DP works in nature conservation and may have to take his off a lot and I will swallow lose mine the first chance I get, I'm sure.

We originally thought simple wooden rings but then I think those are a bit too under-dressed even for us - I will often wear smart clothes to work and not sure wood will go with that.

However, yellow gold too showy for us, white gold + platinum too expensive - then we saw some titanium ones today in the jeweller's. About £70 each, simple, but nice enough to wear with a suit.

Anyone got a titanium ring? Do they last? Any likely allergy issues? Do they turn green like cheapo silver?

DH has had one for the past 6 years; it still looks brand new and no allergic reactions. He got it for the same reasons as your DP - he has to take it off quite a lot and tbh he wasn't even sure about wearing a ring to begin with but it suits him perfectly Grin

PersonalClown · 17/06/2012 16:56

DP's been wearing a titanium ring I bought for him for 2 years now.
He's a delivery driver for Ocado and it's been bashed and battered and still looks as good as new.

I went for a brushed finish rather than polished so an occasional nick or scratch doesn't show up so much.

Titanium allergies are rare, about 4% of the population.

DH and I have titanium rings. They have lasted 6 years so far with no problems. It's what they make aircraft out of - v.hardwearing! :)

SofaKing · 17/06/2012 17:08

My dh has also had a titanium wedding ring for six years and it is fine. He destroyed two engagement rings in five years so definitely more durable, and it hasn't needed cleaning either, unlike my white gold ring which I was advised to have replated by a jeweller to remove the scratches.

RevoltingPeasant · 17/06/2012 17:25

Thanks for this! They sound super practical and really just what we want. Are polished ones likely to get all scratched up then? DP found a brushed one which he liked but the one I like is polished. Could I get it replated if it got scratched after a couple of years?

Really appreciated all the replies Smile

Hello, main issue with titanium rings is that they can't be sized.

So if you lose/gain a lot of weight on your hands you'd probably have to get a new ring.

The brushed look can get a bit scratched up but it's impossible to polish out. Still quite hard to scratch up mind you.

The plainer ones are easier to maintain (but it's really marginal so I don't even consider it to be honest.)

Sofaking, all white metals including gold and platinum need to be plated with rhodium to keep them bright and scratch free. In their 'natural state' they aren't quite as good to look at. They don't tell you that when you buy it of course!

I have a titanium ring that I've worn for about 9 years and it's worn just as well as my platinum engagement and wedding rings.

Krumbum · 17/06/2012 18:26

Another option is tungsten my partner has had a tungsten ring for 5 years and it looks new.

doggiesayswoof · 17/06/2012 18:35

Dh and I both have titanium rings and my engagement ring is too.

Lasted 6 years and look new. Very pleased with them.

White gold doesn't have to be expensive. DH refused to buy the white gold ring I suggested because it was £12.99 in argos, so I found one in a local jeweller for £50 that he felt was more suitable (even though it was identical!)

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 17/06/2012 18:38

(its a plain band)

belindarose · 17/06/2012 18:40

We have titanium wedding rings and my engagement ring is titanium too. The wedding rings are inlaid with a silver stripe (couldn't afford anything more at the time) and the silver is scratched (in a nice way) but the titanium isn't. They're lovely. Never known anyone else with one.

sancerrre · 17/06/2012 18:41

They're a bugger to cut off of you break your finger. DH has ended up wearing his around his neck (on a chain)

MrsKitty · 17/06/2012 18:45

DH has had his for 8.5 yrs now - still looks good as new. I really like it.

RevoltingPeasant · 17/06/2012 18:48

Cheers all :)

Sancerre - just another reason to avoid serious hand injuries? Wink

I think we will go with them. DP has naturally very slim fingers so even if he lost weight it's unlikely he'd drop a ring size: I have stubby fingers but am a good size for my height so barring sudden weight gain in pregnancy will probably not shift sizes. If we both become obese I guess we'll have other things to worry about anyhow!

Have you thought about silver? My sister has a lovely chunky silver designer-y one which was about £50 I think, it always looks bright and shiny, no issues with green-ing apparently because she wears it all the time.

whackamole · 17/06/2012 19:36

We have silver - DH had a titanium ring (from Argos!) which he has been wearing as an 'engagement' ring for 4 years and as everyone has said, no issues at all. My engagement ring is white gold, we couldn't afford white gold so got silver wedding rings - £25-odd each from Amazon.

FoxPass · 17/06/2012 19:50

DH has had his for 8 years, it's a two-tone band, still looks good and going strong :)

Walkingonhotcoals · 17/06/2012 19:54

Revolting - Dp's ring is titanium (i adore it) and when we recieved it it was to small, they resized up to the next size for us no problem. Smile

valiumredhead · 18/06/2012 07:59

Be careful with white gold as it will need re plating every year minimum.

Silver is lovely - always shiny!

valiumredhead · 18/06/2012 08:26

I mean at least every year - sorry it's early!

valiumredhead · 18/06/2012 08:27

No I don't, I mean at the very least. ffs Blush

Carrotcakeisace · 18/06/2012 18:59

Dh has a titanium ring and it looks as good as new after 10 years. It has however, scratched the inside rim of all our mugs were he has washed up and ripped my leather stealing wheel to shreds in the car!
