new hair style

I have no style! Help!

I wear second hand clothes, have an outgrown MN haircut (see profile) and generally need a style make over...but lets just start with the hair.

I've brown hair and eyes, medium-thick and shoulder length. I'm short too, medium build. I find myself tying back my hair a lot and have always dreamt of a short hair style but I'm frightened of looking a bit masculine. Any ideas please?

I had my shoulder length brown hair cut into a graduated bob (think when Victoria Beckham had hers done) about 3 months ago, and had golden lo-lights put in.

At first I loved it and then I felt it was slightly too short because I could hardly roll it round the brush to start with. Now it has grown so it is about an inch longer than my chin at the front, and the back is a bit longer than it was when it was first cut I love it. It is so much easier to do in the morning, holds it shape and doesn't look like rats tails at the end of the day!

I can tell that you are very pretty even from your funny picture! And you have really lovely long hair....which I would be loath to cut too short... I think go for something that skims your shoulders length wise and than you can go shorter if you feel like it.

What about a heavy blunt cut fringe that sits just below your eyebrows for a more drastic change? Very stylish. Google Freja Beha. Lush

If you are fed up of just tying back your hair, what about doing--

A high bun piled on top of your head held in place with pins
A loose side plait
A sleek high pony tail, with a strand of hair wrapped around the hair bobble for neatness.

landofsoapandglory · 16/06/2012 11:32

Yes, like the Victoria Beckham one. Fay Ripley has a longer one on the. Cover of her new cook book, which looks lovely. (I would post a link but I am on my iPad and haven't worked out how to do itBlush)

LeBFG · 16/06/2012 11:41

Thanks nilbyname Blush - I've got into a real style no-mans-land over the last 5 years and feel a bit like an alien iyswim.

I like the fringe idea - I'll pass it by DH. I would love Beckam's style - short but feminin - but you probably need a bit of confidence to pass it off wouldn't you?

this

landofsoapandglory · 16/06/2012 12:31

BFG I am the least confident person ever. Think wall flower, hide in the corner type person, but my hair makes me feel better about myself and I don't feel so dowdy and mumsy as I did before.

Charliefox · 16/06/2012 14:23

Your hair already looks lovely - don't do anything with it! Helpful???

mylittleprincess3455 · 16/06/2012 15:41

Just had a look at your profile and your hair is absolutely gorgeous, the slight wave just looks effortlessly pretty. Don't do anything to it!!!

However if you did want a slight change what about putting in a few layers into it, would make the waves look nice.

LeBFG · 16/06/2012 18:19

It probably looks better than normal because I dyed it last week...It normally just looks lank and style-less. I'm liking the Beckham idea the more I think of it - she's everywhere at the moment, but I didn't think for a minute about copying her hair. I shall mull on it. Thanks guys!

I would give the sleek bob a MISS.

You have thick wavy hair, VB has thin straight hair. Work with what you have or else you will be battling to make your hair straight and sleek all the time, drying and straightening it and then the condition will take a nose dive.

toddlerama · 18/06/2012 08:51

I have similar hair to you and after a few months debating it, had it cut into this

The cut is AMAZING and so liberating - it's really fast to style and always looks 'done' even first thing. I just run my hands through it. And it has taken years of me.

The colour was another story....after having it short for a month or so, I went to get it bleached at the hairdressers and discovered too late that about 2 inches of my ends had dye on them that will not bloody budge. I left the hairdressers after 9 hours in the chair with the same sodding colour I went in with. At least they didn't charge me. Blush

HandMadeTail · 18/06/2012 09:01

I have just had mine cut a bit like this.

People have been very complementary. It's very easy to do in the morning, although it does look a bit like Sid Viscious before I've wet it!

Most people say it makes me look younger, although DD2 (11) said I look like an old person trying to be cool. So perhaps everyone else is just being polite.

LeBFG · 18/06/2012 09:28

Thanks for the new imput. DH has categorically refused the VB haircut - says it looks like a helmet Hmm - I don't why DHs have such an large say in their partners' haircuts. DH likes his hair short, especially in the summer. No wonder the first thing women do when they split from a beau is to cut their hair...

DH also says the short haircuts are for older women - double Hmm. Though he kinda likes the fringe. I may try this first with a few long layers, then if I still want more of a change, try and talk DH around.

Your hair is soft, pretty and ultra-feminine - which probably means that's your natural style (in clothes and hair), even if it's not what you usually wear.
Victoria Beckham has the pixie face and tiny bone structure that suit theshort crop. She's also quite dramatic, so the angled straight bob looks great as well.

Best to find a hairdresser who'll work ^with* the natural 'you' rather than fight against it and give yourself loads of hard work.

Just tey shorter with a few more layers to start with then you won't scare DH, and work from there. A graduated fringe is less of a dramtic change than a heavy blunt one, and it still looks nice framing your face when you put it up.

I really like this one and think it would suit your features.

flowery · 18/06/2012 09:44

Goodness, DH doesn't have any say in my haircut, why would he? I ask his opinion because I value it, but that's as far as it goes. The idea that he could 'categorically refuse' something I wanted to do with my hair seems v strange to me, tbh.

Have the Vb haircut if that's what you want!

chipmunksex · 18/06/2012 10:13

Please do not get that VB haircut, like others have said it just won't work with your natural wave. Also it is very Mumsy IMO and where I live anyway THE default haircut for women.

Have you tried styling your long hair differently? There are loads of great demos on youtube, such as the sock bun and different plaits and all sorts. By all means get a good trim but I'm not sure short hair is the answer.

On the other hand Michelle williams hair in that picture linked to above is beyond gorgeous, but she is blonde and I always think those sort of styles suit fair hair best. Hmm

What have you done to your face in that pic? It's a bit scary.Shock

LeBFG · 18/06/2012 12:37

hi hi - just a bit paranoid that all

OP posts:
mylittleprincess3455 · 18/06/2012 17:40

I think your hair type is lovely and that you should embrace it - styling it differently may be the way to go.

Your hair would look lovely if you styled it in the way that princess Kate does, as it looks as if it is naturally like that and with some extra product it could look fab.

LeBFG · 19/06/2012 16:11

Following on from the advice here, I've updated my cut using a variation on the tried and tested MNetter (Nutter?) technique to cut a fringe. What do you think - keep or go to salon and get it properly cut? This time, I couldn't be bothered to fuzz the image .

OP posts:
nilbyname · 19/06/2012 17:30

You did that by yourself?? Respect! You look great.

If anything....I might suggest giving your hair a bit of a treatment now and again as it does look a bit dry.

LeBFG · 19/06/2012 19:34

My hair is pretty fuzzy now, especially when specially brushed (as in photo). It always used to be glossy and sleek with very little maintenance Sad. I don't know what's happened since I left my twenties behind!

nilbyname · 19/06/2012 19:36

Oh god, I know. I have been using coconut oil as a leave in conditioner overnight 1/week and moroccan oil every other day. It does work IMO.

LeBFG · 19/06/2012 19:44

Oh, really! That sounds good - do you wrap your hair in a towel or something to stop the oil getting everywhere?
