What to wear for visit to potential school (private) for DD (8)?

Taking DD to visit a school tomorrow. She's currently at state primary but this one is a private school. DD is very excited about it and last night spent a long time thinking about what she should wear, which made me think: WTF should I wear?

Am imagining there will be lots of Birkin-toting rich yummy mummies there so don't want to be a scruff, but don't have a Birkin-esque wardrobe and don't want to look too try-hard either.

Is jeans too casual?

Crotchless pants and chaps. Hth.

Bunbaker · 13/06/2012 17:06

We looked at a private school for DD and most parents I saw wore jeans. I didn't notice anyone perticularly well dressed either. I wouldn't recognise a designer outfit anyway so perhaps I am not the right person to offer advice.

Clothes

Rabid · 13/06/2012 17:07

Nipple tassels and welly boots

usualsuspect · 13/06/2012 17:07

A ballgown

Rabid · 13/06/2012 17:09

Go dressed up as a cockney sparra

lambethlil · 13/06/2012 17:09

For you -what you feel comfortable in.
For DD -as square as you dare/ can make her wear. Or school uniform.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 13/06/2012 17:11

5 inch heels, leather mini, low cut top, hair extensions and inch long false nails.

Loveleopardprint · 13/06/2012 17:40

Sensible answers seem to be lacking. Think jeans are fine, maybe worn with a nice jacket and scarf or necklace. Think a smile and good eye contact more important. I wouldn't make your dd look too square as the other children are probably quite trendy, in a Boden/jack wills /joules kind of way out of uniform.

shushpenfold · 13/06/2012 17:44

Honestly - they'll be happy with your money no matter what you wear, but the vast majority that I see also go down the nice jeans, top, jacket as suggested above. Some however are ultra smart and others seriously scruffy...the latter are in a small minority though.

Rabid · 13/06/2012 18:25

Bondage. Go as a vice girl

GinandChocolate · 13/06/2012 18:46

I usually go in smart jeans/jacket/scarf or sometimes smartish trousers with a cardi. Most important is shows you can walk in as you may be trekking around a fair bit. Go for something you feel relaxed in.

reastie · 13/06/2012 18:52

I work at a private school. I can honestly say I never really notice what parents and children are wearing when they look around the school Blush but I think that's as it's just run of the mill normal stuff - don't recall anyone super smart office styley it's usually just maybe smart jeans or trousers and a nice top with maybe a jacket. Wear something you're comfy and confident in and if you're worried it's a bit casual just jazz it up a bit with accessories. hth

Poodlehorse · 13/06/2012 19:04

If you feel comfy in jeans then they will be fine, I think I wore leggings, long jumper/tunic and boots, basically everyday stuff. DH did the same, jeans, trainer thingies, tshirt and vneck. I confess to putting DS in some smart casuals, Boden grey poloshirt, checked trews from Vertbaudet (so he wasn't head to toe Boden) and his Boden "converse" trainers with skulls and his fatface cardi. Nice stuff but still very much what he would wear if we were out and about at a weekend. We had to take him off school for the day so I ruled out uniform. It will be fine, don't stress! The mums I saw hanging about were dressed like every other at a school gate, nothing overly fancy at all. Most are probably too skint once they pay the fees.

Peppin · 13/06/2012 22:26

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I'm going with a pair of slim navy trews and a Banana Republic v neck. Possibly with the crotchless panties, nipple tassels and other fetish gear suggested by others on underneath Wink

How did it go? Hope your dd enjoyed her day. Smile

Peppin · 15/06/2012 12:37

Thanks Loveleopardprint. It was a fantastic school and DD absolutely loved it. She has not stopped asking questions about what she has to do to get in, and whether or not they will definitely have a place for her, since.

Ex-h seemed to be impressed by how keen she was and what a good match for her the school seemed to be. Hopefully that will assist when it comes to the difficult conversation about how much of the fees we both have to pay (he earns a LOT more than me)!

Good luck. My dds are both at independent school. We compromise a lot for it but feel that it is totally worth it. They are very happy. Smile
