Parabens when pregnant?

Birdies · 13/06/2012 13:15

I've been through phases of using paraben-free stuff and then my vanity gets the better of me and I go back to things that work and make me look better!

I don't know though whether it's advisable to avoid products containing parabens when pregnant so was wondering if anyone knows of any guidance or has any views on this?

Thanks :)

I've definately been more mindful of what I've been putting on my skin this pregnancy, I've stopped using perfume altogether (full of all kinds of nasties) and I've swapped my clarins face wash for the Simple face wash in the green tube which is paraben free, I've also stopped using fake tan and dying my hair for the time being

Apart from that I still use the same stuff as I did before (foundation, lippy etc)

I used to get quite neurotic about this kind of stuff but I've relaxed a bit now - I think if I've been using products with all kinds of nasties for years they have probably all accumulated in my body over time anyway so 9 months of total abstinence isn't going to make a huge difference

Or that's what I've been telling myself anyway!

what's the point in only stopping whilst pregnant? esp if you're going to continue after giving birth?

Birdies · 13/06/2012 16:43

I've always worried parabens/other chemicals from skincare products etc might get in the bloodstream and pose a risk to baby. What does anyone else think about stopping whilst pregnant?

I just would not use anything at all, haven't done for 10 years, but, if I did, would not stop for just 7 months, especially if it's a real issue for you if you really like products that do contain them?

and what about products for the baby? if you're going to use anything by boots/johnsons/etc anyway then what's the point?

Birdies · 13/06/2012 17:08

I don't use anything with parabens in for my baby. Stopping during pregnancy for me would be to avoid any risk to baby. Without proof I find it hard to apply the same rule to myself and stop when not pregnant too.

What made you decide to not use them, was it a particular study or just the not being sure of safety? If I knew for definite they weren't safe I'd never use them either.

well, I don't see the point in taking the risk, especially since there are equivalent (and some better) products that do not contain them, so no excuse not to really. IN the old days it was a nightmare, the only alternative was "health food shop" stuff, in naff packaging, which smelt awful and didnt perform but now? my god, there is something for every budget and it does outperform the standard stuff. Even make up now is fantastic, and it's not more expensive, so why not?

Are there products that you can't live without that do contain them then?

Birdies · 13/06/2012 17:16

Id love to hear which products you use that work for you. I'd happily swap for good if I could find some decent ones. It's everything really - day and night moisturisers in particular, a good primer and/or serum and then make-up wise I've never found anything I thought matched up to the chemical-filled ones, sadly. If you have time would be great to see what you recommend

well, I write about it in my spare time, so here you go :)
yumetcetera.com

conventional primers are made of silicone, but there are some without: Inika and also (surprisingly) Bareminerals Oil Free is made with starch instead

have a look and let me know, there are a zillion brands, plus, the load I have at home and not enough time to photograph/write about!!!!

what kind of foundation/blusher do you like?

MissFoodie · 13/06/2012 17:25

btw which brand/s do you use on your baby? just asking as you need to be VERY careful with labels, so many say "natural" but still contain crap, the biggest culprit is SLS in shampoo/bath stuff/hand wash

Birdies · 13/06/2012 17:36

I'll have a good look, thanks!

I use Weleda baby stuff which I think is ok (I hope!) and not much else apart from good old water.

I like any foundation that looks natural but still gives decent coverage. And nothing that would leave me shiny as have combination skin.

weleda is great for kids.
re foundation, I mean, powder, cream, liquid, pressed....
and blusher, powder or cream?

Birdies · 13/06/2012 20:04

My favourite foundations and blushers are usually liquid ones. Never got on with the mineral powder stuff

foundation: inika, organic glam (organic pharmacy) or UNE
blusher (cream): UNE, RMS Beauty, Vapour Beauty, 100% Pure Pot Rouge, Youngblood

Thanks :)
