If you have very 'combination' hair, how do you deal with it? (greasy roots/ dry ends)

I have hair that gets greasy within a day but the ends are dry, split and very frazzled (ok not split at mo as have had cut, but still super dry and bound to split again)
I wash my hair every two days. It is fine on the day it's washed, as looks 'even' all over eg fresh roots, moroccon hair oil (light) on the ends. In other words, it looks very healthy and neither greasy nor dry, just shiny and clean.
I do not have time to wash hair daily (for a start, no shower) and it irritates my scalp to do so anyway (along the hairline).
But my hair always looks crap on day two. As fringe and roots are so greasy by then, I spray on dry shampoo. The ends look very dry again so i put more oil on them, and / or some shine spray. This then leaves me with 'two toned' hair. ie different textures. Matt dry roots, and greasy shiny ends. It's so obvious I've used to very different products.
What do you do if your hair's like this?

I wash it with very rich shampoo, Ojon Restorative to be precise.
I also have oily skin and only thing that keeps it shine free is oil - the idea being that if you dry your skin out with all those anti-shine oil free creams, that only makes your skin produce more oil to compensate. Give it oil and it will be happy.

And it seems to be the same with hair. this Ojon shampoo is very rich and has oils in it and it does seem to calm my scalp so the hair stays clean longer. Might also work with other similar products.

Where do you live? I find my hair gets very greasy when I'm down South because the water doesn't wash as cleanly as in Scotland. Final wash with filtered water may make a massive difference if you're anything like me.

lololizzy · 12/06/2012 16:56

Greater London - hard water. I tried rich shampoos for a while, but they made it v greasy and v limp. However, no actual oils in the shampoo so maybe give it another go. I always use I Love Juicy by Lush as great for grease, but follow with lots of conditioner (rinse out) then moroccon oil on ends.
Oily skin too.
Hazle, i keep reading this...is it hazelnut oil? olive oil? to cleanse oily skin.

I use Kerastase Bain Divalent for oily roots and dry ends it's fantastic!

SundaeGirl is right my hair improved massivley during the three years I lived in Scotland. Back south now though and we're back to the usual.

I also wash my hair every two days - any more frequently and it gets dreadful.

I use an "intensive care" type shampoo, but as far as possible I only wash near the scalp - the ends obviously do get washed as I rinse the shampoo out but I hope that the dry ends don't get too rigorous a washing as I know it's bad for them.

I then use a very rich anti-split-ends conditioner, but mainly keeping it to the tips and trying not to get much conditioner on my scalp as I know that it could exacerabate the grease problem.

On the in-between days I used batiste dry shampoo to keep the grease under control.

i used that for a while but that was in the 90s might have called something different but was def Keratase and salon sold me it for that, wasnt great on me but maybe they've improved it now? How does it know, though?! I mean, which bits need what!

I find using clear shampoos (non-creamy formulas) work better with regards to greasiness. I put conditioner in the ends only and use some Moroccan oil in the ends before blow drying.

lololizzy · 12/06/2012 17:10

who does clears??

I don't to the oil cleansing, but you can find a lot of info about it here. I just use Decleor facial oils as moisturizer.

swooosh · 13/06/2012 02:53

Sorry I mean clear like sheer I guess....just a non creamy coloured one.

Jux · 13/06/2012 03:15

Do you condition your scalp, or just the ends? My hairdresser told dd (whose hair sounds like yours) not to condition anywhere but her ends.

I did read in an interview in Cosmo or the like - many years ago - with the wife of a very fashionable hairdresser (Nicky Clarke?) that the best thing for your hair is to rinse it for 20 minutes at least Shock

Bonsoir · 13/06/2012 07:23

I think you just have to bite the bullet and reconcile yourself to washing your hair daily if that is what it needs.

MrsSpoonFromButtonMoon · 13/06/2012 08:08

Lilo no idea but I've been using it at least 5 years now and it works for me. I also love the fact that my hair doesn't get used to it as it did with supermarket shampoos, could never finish a bottle of supermarket shampoo as my hair didn't like it anymore about 3/4 the way through. Even with the Kerastase I still try to concentrate my washing efforts on the roots and only apply conditioner to the ends/mid lengths. Also use a Kerastase conditioner, Lait Vital, find it quite light, you don't need much to get the desired effect, it lasts ages.

MrsSpoonFromButtonMoon · 13/06/2012 08:09

Sorry Lolo, not Lilo! :-)). Silly phone!

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 13/06/2012 11:10

I have very greasy hair but only usually wash it every other day. I usually wash my hair at night, so say if I wash it Monday night, before I go to bed on Tuesday night I use dry shampoo & then wear it tied back on the Wednesday the dry shampoo takes away the grease but makes it hard to get it looking nice down, so thats why I just tie it back. Cuts down on washing/drying it every day!

redrubyshoes · 13/06/2012 11:14

I use baby shampoos and only condition the ends and I wash my hair every day. The baby shampoo doesn't seem to 'strip' the hair like adult shampoos do.

lololizzy · 13/06/2012 19:26

ha I like Lilo. Mind you, it does remind me of Lilo Lil from Bread Shock
I never, ever condition the scalp
I rinse tons, but 20 mins??!!!! We don't have a shower, and crappy old victorian plumbing, so it's dunking my head under the slow trickle of the bath taps, and then filling up sink basin several times with cool water. It all takes ages hence every other day.
Derby I do sometimes go to bed with dry shampoo on hair to make it last longer! not good for pillows though, if its the coloured one!

Vosene shampoo, the salacylic acid in it exfoliates your scalp so it's a DEEP clean. Then a rich, silicone-free conditioner on the lengths. And I find moisturising hair creams/cream leave in conditioner better than oils, but use sparingly.
