Foundation with staying power of Double Wear but doesn't go white in photos?

Hetaera · 12/06/2012 15:08

I love the mask coverage, non rub-off and ultra long lasting qualities of EL Double Wear but it makes my face look Michael Jackson white in flash photography.

Revlon Colorstay does the same. In fact, any foundation with spf seems to have the same effect. Bare Minerals makes my face itch.

Any ideas for a substitute? I know there are loads of fantastic foundations around which photgraph well (Healthy Mix, any Chanel or Bobbi Brown).

However, I really need one that will last me all day like Double Wear, not rub off onto clothes and have a good coverage. Help!

Bare Minerals - fab!

valiumredhead · 12/06/2012 15:23

Oh shit - it makes you itch!

In that case have you tried Lily Lolo as it doesn't have itchy bismuth in it!

GitAwfMayLend · 12/06/2012 15:25

I don't think it exists.

Either you have somethig like DW which has the texture of PVA glue and sticks to your face like shit on a shovel (but looks crap) or you have a soft, dewy and serumy foundation like By terry, healthy mix, vitalum which looks great but you have to reapply during the day.

I would go for the one you have to reapply.

Minerals stuff - nah. Makes you look flawless yes, but doll like and with skin like a dried up old river bed. Plus when I tried it is oxidised on my face and went orange. And the bismuth made me itch.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 12/06/2012 15:39

How about Laura Mercier? They have a matt foundation which looks lovely. Can't say how well it photographs, but they are good for samples I've found

GitAwfMayLend · 12/06/2012 15:40

The best you can do I think is use a primer, which helps staying power.

Hetaera · 12/06/2012 15:45

Thanks GitAwf. Shit on a shovel foundation! [grins]
It's for my wedding and I wanted a base that I can trust to stay on but also photograph well. My skin seems a bit too combination for ByTerry and it tends to slide about, even with a primer. Is there a particular ByTerry one you would recommend?
Hmmm, the quest continues...

Barbra Daly primer is the best ime.

Hetaera · 12/06/2012 15:47

Oooh, Laura Mercier. Thank you. I will go and have a play at one of their counters.

Hi I got married just over a week ago and had mac studio fix (£19) on - looked amazing (had awful skin that day) with the studio fix concealer (£13) stayed on all day and night, also been told that because mac was made for makeup artists it is one of the best for photography. She also put on a powder called prep&prime (£18) which helped to hold it all day x

Iatemyskinnyperson · 12/06/2012 16:02

look here

GitAwfMayLend · 12/06/2012 16:06

I recommend the Eclat Opulent but it costs a fortune, and to be honest the sdtaying power isn't brilliant.

If I were you i would go into Space NK anyway and ask for their recommendation - they are brilliant and very knowledgeable, and they sell the best (imo) foundations available, laura mercier, Chantecaille and By Terry.

Try Lisa eldridge's wedding make up tutorial, also party make up where she shows foundations that don't show up white.

I used Lancome teint idole ultra last week, stayed all day and no flashback that I can tell.

I have done all the work for you as have been trying to find non-spf full cover foundation for months.

Hetaera · 12/06/2012 20:45

Thank you ladies! Lots of fantastic tips there. I watched the Lisa Eldridge videos. Has anyone tried Guerlain's Parure Extreme or Suqqu's foundation?

OOOH Whackamole!!! I'm really excited about this. Is that the 24 hour one? Have a glass of Wine on me for all your hard work. :)

Right - I have put the baby down so can type better!

I haven't tried either of the ones you have mentioned above, but I'm sure you can find reviews on Makeupalley.com. I have tried

  • MAC studio sculpt - I liked it, but it's not very fluid and dries quickly so it's quite hard to blend.
  • Armani lasting silk - I really liked this one, but it's £40 per bottle and I just couldn't swing to it.
  • Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24hr - really liked this one, a nice liquid foundation, just the right colour and as I said lasted all day.

I also tried a couple of powder ones but didn't like them at all. I used Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage concealer, I didn't like it at first but it's BRILLIANT! I normally wear a sheerer foundation and just use the concealer on blemishes and red cheeks.

If I'm honest, I didn't notice a huge amount of flashback on any of them, but that is probably because I use a pale colour anyway, and there were very few pics with flash.

My advice would be, get yourself down to Debenhams or John Lewis, have a go and get as many samples as you can! I didn't buy the Lancome one, I'm still using a sample I got and have used about 5 times.

Oh - forgot, didn't try it personally but Benefit Playstick is a full cover foundation with no SPF.

For reference, I have combination skin, I use lemon juice on my nose and it really helps cut down on oil breakthrough.

Hope this is helpful!

Hetaera · 12/06/2012 21:05

Thanks rebecca87 for the Mac info.

Lemon juice on nose? This is very interesting! Thanks Whackamole.

MAC Pro Longwear, Illamasqua Skin Base or Lancome Teint Idole are my top long lasting good coverage foundations.

Foundations containing Titanium Oxide (SPF) will cause flash back so best avoided. Also avoid using anything glowy on the T-Zone.

whackamole · 13/06/2012 00:33

Oh yes, forgot about Illamasqua. I have the Rich Liquid foundation, the colour match is brilliant but I can't make it work on my skin sadly.

Krumbum · 13/06/2012 02:01

Pan stick, thick and extremely covering, no SPF.

Decameron · 13/06/2012 08:12

I've started using Chanel Perfection Lumiere, it stays on really well with no Michael Jackson effect!

whackamole · 13/06/2012 11:03

Oh, don't use the lemon juice on freshly exfoliated skin - as you can imagine, it bloody hurts!

Havingkittens · 13/06/2012 12:01

The Illamasqua Skin Base foundation is a lot easier to work than the Rich Liquid wackamole. You can apply it quite sheer and build it up as required to a really good coverage (even in place of concealer in some cases) so it's very versatile.

RetiredDJ · 13/06/2012 17:10

Can I also recommend Studio fix by mac. and the concealer and powder too!
I used to be a dj (hence the username!) and I'd wear it all night DJIng in sweaty clubs and it wouldn't budge. It has no spf and doesn't flash up white in photos. Apply with a brush rather than your fingers as I found (personally) that the oil in my fingers would effect how long it lasted.
