thinning hair, there must be something that helps!

No vanity intended. My hair has always been just about the only thing I could be proud of but in the last year its thinned noticibly at the front. Been to doc, no health related issue and therefore no magic tonic!

In this day and age there must be something I can do? Im 48 btw and have already tried sea kelp and an iron supplement.

Coincidentally I just read this post. Nioxin specialise in hair thinning.

I think Kerastase bain de force is also for thinning hair, but could be wrong.

SunnyOutlook · 08/06/2012 12:07

thank you for replying olive. I will google these right now

It's awful isn't it. I think mine is hormonal but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with. Everywhere I look, people seem to have thick hair and it really upsets me. I've tried a few things and nothing works so far. I just try to disguise it a bit with dry shampoo and drying hair upside down but that doesn't address the problem as such. I've just bought Aveda Invati S & C for thinning hair but I suspect it's like trying to treat cystic acne with a bit of Clearasil Sad

Also, I don't know the extent of your thinning, but being more gentle with your hair could help. My hair is naturally quite thin and for the last year I've been brushing and washing really gently, washing only every 2 or 3 days and making sure that when I wash and condition it I am not running my fingers through it and pulling out loads of hairs. It's made a huge difference to the thickness - my pony tail used to be tiny and it's grown a lot!

charlie, it is awful, I just hope it will rebalance in some way. The doc said it should get to a certain stage then stop. but im naively hoping to find a way to bring it back.

Are you very thin?

My hair was always very thick, though fine. I was also never bigger than a size eight. I found that when I passed forty my hair started thinning at a distressing (no pun intended!) rate - even pulling my hand through seemed to release loads from my scalp.

However, I have put a bit of weight on in the last couple of years - not much, but it still annoyed me. But the fact is that my skin looks a lot better and my hair, though not the crowning glory it once was, has become noticeably thicker.

This may well be merely coincidental, but I just thought I'd mention my experience.

How do all these superstars stay super slim then but always have such glossy hair (and yes, I know lots have extensions but not all of them and you can still see that it's thick hair around the crown and temples).

MsOliveOyl · 08/06/2012 12:39

Roxy that's really interesting! My hair getting thicker has coincided with me putting on a little bit of weight too. I was the same as you when I was a size 6-8 - it just seemed to fall out with very little pulling, esp when I applied conditioner for some reason.

SunnyOutlook · 08/06/2012 13:04

Roxy - thin - I wish!!

although co-incidently the hair thinning started when I put on (quite quickly) 2 stone which I had just spent the past 2 years losing - yo yo

so i'm probably at my heaviest and tbh unhealthiest for a while

OK - after a couple of hours of research, I have a plan which makes me feel better (although it remains to be seen if it will work)
1 have ordered Redken Intra Force for the external appearance side of things
2 and Spatone vitamin C iron supplement (can't hurt)

and 3 - something that can't be bought unfortunately, I am going to try to cut down calorie wise, including alchohol and get off the couch some exercise

I can see from looking back over old posts etc that this is something that affects many of us - so here's hoping

Good luck Sunny!

Charliefox · 08/06/2012 14:05

I bought Spa Tone yesterday, specifically to address hair loss. Here's hoping it has some effect!

valiumredhead · 08/06/2012 14:53

Kelp supplements.

Pelicano · 08/06/2012 15:35

I'm into my second month of spatone.
I have tried the Nioxin and it smells lovely but didn't do anything for my hair (TK Maxx had some in and it was 1/3 of the salon price which I had been paying!)

Regaine.......well, let's just say that if you don't mind heavy oily sticky hair as opposed to thinning hair, then you're in luck.

Think mine is genetic so it's all about disguising it.
