Hair dye - which colour to cover greying mousey hair?!

my hair is now 50/50 grey. I'm trying to economise on trips to the hairdressers where I usually get the roots done every 6-8 wks to cover the ever increasing White grey hairs. The hairdresser uses an "8" I think (whatever that is!) and I generally come out with dark blonde hair. Any tips for what I should choose from Boots? Many thanks!

No idea which colour, but I always use L'Oreal Casting, which does a good job and seems to last a fair while. It's not permanent, but fades out slowly, so your roots don't look quite as noticeable.

I use nice n easy. I'm mid-brown with a lot of grey naturally. I've found going lighter the only option so use 103. Very easy to use and works well though I have to leave it on for full 45 mins. Have been using every 8 to 10 weeks for over a year.

Thanks boris for your speedy reply! Yes I've heard L'oreal is the one to opt for may take the plunge

My hairdresser tells me its good! It's not uniform (on me anyway) so looks like I have (subtle) highlights. Saves me a fortune.

8 base is Light Blonde.

Thanks dolly - so does that mean I should go for a 'light blonde' ?

This is interesting as I have darkish hair that is about 50% grey. Have been going lighter over the last year at a considerable cost at the hairdressers and decided yesterday to do a home dye to cover my roots and try to get my hair to be the same ish shade as the variation from roots to end was considerable. The ends had gone very light and were almost back to a white state while the roots and the back were a dark drom colour.

Anyhow I choose a 7 shade dye in a dark blonde which was close to my hair colour in the shop. Thats what the hairdresser told me to use if I was going to touch up my roots before going back. I sat with it on for 30 minutes and yes it has coloured my hair but the coulous is a mid brown rather than a dark blonde. I checked again on the packaging both inside and outside of the box to check i had the right shade all round and yes I did follow the instrictions to a T.

Next time i am going for a shade lighter and will hope it comes out OK. Dont get me wrong I actually like the colour as it suits my skin tone well but I feel that it has taken me back a year to when i had dark hair and a badger stripe roots section that grew back.

Sorry I only know the professional colours, but plenty on here can probably give you the equivalent.

As you can see from slalmsuki's post, home colouring isn't as easy as it seems. I am good at colouring other peoples but would find it near impossible to do my own! You could always try model nights or training college to keep the cost down.
I have blonde highlights through a 7 base for my 50/50 hair, it really helps disguise the regrowth.
