Mascara, where do you put yours?

Well obviously I use it on my eye lashes Smile but I have now spent a small fortune on mascara because it always dries out and goes clumpy within a couple of weeks.

Should I keep it in the fridge? Somewhere cool? I keep mine in the bathroom cabinet usually but it is above the radiator, is it the heat that is ruining it?

I've always kept mine in a make up bag so it would be room temperature. The radiator heat might be drying it out. Try keeping in a make up bag or on a dressing table. I find the cheaper ones don't last very long at all. Once opened the air gets in them & they dry within a few weeks. A nice one is Lancome's Definicils. If you use their Cils booster underneath you get more volume.

In a make up bag in my room. I very rarely wear makeup, so mine last for years, but don't tend to dry up. Are you leaving it near a radiator ?

MiniTheMinx · 01/06/2012 14:06

Yes, the bathroom cabinet is above the radiator but now the heating is switched off, it's still drying out.

I have tried the lancome defincils, very good but again it dried out Confused

I am sitting here with 5 mascara on the desk, all useless. I have very thick, black eyelashes but they are very short and stubby, so I have to have very liquidy, thin mascara which doesn't thicken lashes only extends them. So when the mascara thickens it is impossible for me to use.

Do you think I should try the fridge? I have just bought L'oreal Double Extension and I'm wondering if I should just try it, I have already wasted pounds after all!

That's odd isn't it. I keep mine in my make up bag in the bathroom and it is fine. Try the fridge but it might go too thick.

blondiep14 · 01/06/2012 14:17

I keep mine in my make-up bag too.

Are you closing the lid tight enough? Any air getting in will dry the mascara up quickly.

Lulumama · 01/06/2012 14:20

I keep mine in dressing table drawer and one in my makeup bag in my handbag.
you should replace them every few months anyway

the runnier mascara i have used is maybelline in the green and pink packaging if you need thin mascara ,

daisyrain · 01/06/2012 14:23

You could put it in a mug of warm water for 5 mins, before using it. Fill the mug about 3/4 full.
I used to do that. I use bourjois now, it doesnt dry up.

Havingkittens · 01/06/2012 14:25

Yep, heat will do for your mascara. Keep away from radiators and windows where the sun streams in. I can't imagine the other extreme will be ideal either (ie. in the fridge). Like Dexter say, it will probably go a bit thick.

Do you "pump" your mascara wand in and out of the bottle before applying mascara? If so, stop. This just puts air into the bottle and causes it to dry out more quickly.

My top tip with mascaras that have become thick or dry is to take the wand out and rinse the brush thoroughly under the warm tap and then, with the brush still a bit wet, put it back in the bottle and stir it around a bit. You can add more water, very gradually to get the consistency you want. If you go too far, don't panic. It will eventually evaporate, as it has been doing up to now, so it will get thicker again. If you think about it, the product that is on the brush is being exposed to the air and then put back in the bottle every day. The mascara that you are applying is just what is added to the product already sitting in the brush that's getting dried out so whatever's on the brush will just be getting thicker and thicker. Please note, for obvious reasons this doesn't work for waterproof mascara.

I keep mine in my make up bag. I use YSL mascara, it doesn't dry out but I use mine everyday so it doesn't last longer than a few months anyway.

RecursiveMoon · 01/06/2012 14:31

I often think that it would be useful to be able to buy mascara thinner in the same way that you can buy Tippex thinner. I'll try the water trick, it's not like you have anything to lose once it's gone a bit dry anyway!

Havingkittens · 01/06/2012 14:33

I promise it works. Olive oil also works - just a drop. But if you are of an eye rubbing persuasion it can make it a bit smudgy!

MiniTheMinx · 01/06/2012 16:36

Thanks everyone, I have five gloopy thick mascaras so I am going to try out all of the advice. I will put the new one in the drawer and keep away from heat.

I think washing the brush seems like a really good idea, so simple but I really hadn't thought of it. I don't wear make up everyday but when I need to tidy myself up for something important it's so frustrating to find I have clumpy eyelashes.
