Another "would you wear this dress to a wedding" question

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 13:13

Bought a dress which is perfect for a specific event. Can't find the exact dress online (got it from TK Maxx) this is the same make, same dress, except the skirt of mine is black, and from under the bust upwards is cream/ivory. Got a wedding at the end of the summer, and was thinking I could wear it for that too, but I know some people are "funny" about black at weddings - although it is only the bottom half. What do you think? Will keep looking to see if I can find a link to the exact dress.
(btw I am pushing 50 if anyone thinks it's perhaps a bit frumpy)

I would, especially as yours isn't all black. If you feel good stuff anyone else!

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 13:27

thanks netbook - I'm of exactly that opinion, but wouldn't want to offend the bride (it's the groom my DH knows really well, but no point in asking him, is there?!)

(still can't find exact dress but know I got a bargain.... £40 for mine)

Sounds perfect - I've been to lots of weddings where people have worn outfits which combine black with cream/ivory and it looks very chic. Just keep your shoes and accessories on the cream/ivory/natural side (or a bright colour could work) and it will be lovely

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 13:36

you think cream/ivory shoes etc rather than black then suburbandweller?

I personally would stick with light coloured shoes but black would be ok if partyish rather than just courts. I think courts would make it all a bit eveningy/wintery for a summer wedding (fine if you're just going to the evening do though)

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 13:55

think you're right. Will probably wear black to the first occasion (day time, ladies' day type thing) just not sure I will get something the right shade but will see what I can find. Or might look for another dress for the wedding, not seen anything quite right so far

This is the sort of thing you could do if you were minded to go for colourful shoes instead (see the picture of the model wearing the dress). It might not work with your dress but it gives you another idea

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 14:28

lovely sandals - but not me. Will have a look round and decide whether to invest in ivory/cream sandals to go with dress for wedding, or whether to go with a different dress that will work with shoes I've already got.

(thanks for your help - I am rubbish at this stuff x)

It's lovely. I wore a cream linen trouser suit, black sleeveless blouse & black trilby hat once to a wedding and got lots of compliments.

I don't think it's frumpy at all, conservative & classic, yes, but very nice.

These shoes might be good with it:

MarysBeard · 01/06/2012 14:39

suburbandweller that outfit is really lovely.

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 14:48

thanks marysbeard (fab name btw)... I like those shoes, will nip into clarks and see if the colour is right. Top of dress is almost an off-white/ivory not really cream - which is what worries me about finding light shoes. Am thinking black might be ok for shoes/sandals if not too heavy - e.g. strappy like the ones suburbandweller linked to, but I think that particular style is too "young" for me

I thought peep toes were a bit summery whilst being a bit classic like the dress.

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 14:58

totally agree. I love them - but also have very difficult feet to fit.

LOL @ classic (= suitable for an old lady like you :-) ) but I do really like them.

I agree black would be ok if not heavy - imo peeptoe/strappy/slingback would all probably be fine.

If you're concerned about getting a matching ivory colour for your shoes, you could always go for a more "neutral" colour. Like this (not suggesting you buy these, but net a porter has lots of pics so it's good for getting ideas!)

lilolilmanchester · 01/06/2012 15:44

I think they are definitely the right style. Some of the nude shoes are a bit "pink" for the dress but definitely helping me think of the right thing to look for - thanks.
