Advice to tone down highlighted hair - please!

My hair is mid/dark blonde and today a friend of a friend who is a hairdresser has coloured it for me but it is now horrible, very blonde with quite yellowy looking bits in it.

Do I just bite the bullet tell her I don't like it and let her at it again ? (she works from home so it's not like I can go back to a salon)

Do I try and buy something and colour it from home? Any recommendations please.

Do I splash the cash and go to a salon to get it sorted?

Arrrgghhh why does my hair never look like I imagine?

My highlights were too light. I've got dark brown hair and the highlights were blondish ones. Anyhow the hairdresser put an all over semi-permanent colour on and now the highlights are a nice reddish shade which looks much nicer. I don't think I'd have dared do it myself but if you are used to using colours at home you could just put a darker colour over the whole lot.

Forgot to say the all over colour was a rich brown

You just need a toner to tone down the yellow and make it look less brassy, cheap and easy to do yourself, really.

You could use a purple based shampoo to tone down the yellow. Touch of silver shampoo designed for old grannies is cheap and works well.

I've been looking at it a lot this evening and I really just want more of my own colour in it. I don't think the beach blond look suits a 43 year old!!!
Is there any home kits that have lasting power or will they just fade out as my hair is now so bleached?
My heart is telling me spend the cash and get a proffesional job done.....

I know what you mean message - I've just had more of my own colour put back on top of the highlights which were just looking messy and brassy as they faded.
I think if you're not confident as to what effect you'll end up with then I'd be tempted to splash the cash if you can afford to. Or I suppose you could DIY and if it's awful then get the hairdresser to sort it.
I came to the same conclusion that bleached blonde highlights didn't suit my age or my colouring and have got my own colour back but nicer. Good luck on your mission.
