Hair dying disaster - HELP!

DairyNips · 28/05/2012 23:53

Ok so I dyed my hair bright red for Xmas. After this faded quite a bit I dyed it a hazelnut brown colour. This came out a kind of warm brown due to the remaining red underneath.

I usually dye it light blonde. I had left it quite a while so had about an inch of roots and tonight bought 'lightest blonde' to try and due it back to my usual colour.

So I dyed it, the roots are light blonde, the rest of my hair is kind of a honey monster colour! Help! I could just due it brown but I really wanted it lighter again. Is there anything I can do??

Excuse the autocorrects, 'due' is supposed to be 'dye'

Visit a hairdresser ASAP - if you really can't afford that then you need to go for an ashy colour to neutralise the yellow

DairyNips · 28/05/2012 23:58

Yeah, can't afford thatSad

Then if I were you I'd go and buy a natural ash blonde colour and put it on the orange bits first and the roots for last 10 mins
Or go dark again?

DairyNips · 29/05/2012 00:03

Ok, will try get to the shop for some tomorrow. I could go dark but then how will I ever get it light again I this keeps happening? Hmm..

Boots do colour removers for about £12. They will strip the hair back to your natural colour. It is very expensive to have it done at the haidressers.

Dropdeadfred · 29/05/2012 09:28

True there are colour strippers but I'm not sure what colour you would end up with and your roots will still be different to the main block because they have been dyed less

DairyNips · 29/05/2012 09:47

Confused Not sure what a colour stripper would do. It's permanent very light blonde I used. My dh has helpfully named me the honey monsterHmmGrin

Jeez, called two hairdressers so far and both of them quoted me prices that include a cut and blow dry. I just had my hair cut (for the 1st time in 6 months!!) last week. I don't need another hair cutAngry I asked one how much it'd be without the cut and she said £7 lessHmm

So far I've been quoted £56 and £53 Shock Wow! I know it's supposed to be for my birthday but no way am I spending that on fixing my hair colour! I'd rather just dye it brown again..

Well colour remover should strip it back to the lightest shade you have had, so it will go a nice Easter chick yellow from the bleach and then you will have to tone it with a 6 wash colorant. Use anything stronger in anything less than a week and it will reoxidise.

Bleaching it all off may be another option but risky if you have had a lot of peroxide on it.It does have the added bonus in that you can tone it straight after. Remember too if you do bleach it down then you have to be very careful to avoid green hair if you put ash colours on top. I think a pearl blonde should kill the yellow and not turn it green. Something like Stockholm by L 'oreal.

Just get a warm mid brown in if it fails to work in the event of further hair catastrophe!

DairyNips · 29/05/2012 11:17

Thanks for the adviceSmile What happens if it deoxidises??

I had a similar disaster whilst at Uni about 10 years ago, I think at the time I bleached it somehow then put a light brown on which made it a lighting blonde/brown shade. I can't remember what type of bleach stuff I used thoughHmm What should I be looking for if I were to bleach it? Can I do that within the week or do I have to wait?

I'm due to have ds3 in 8 days, just wanted presentable hair before he pops outSad

Toner is your friend.

DairyNips · 29/05/2012 11:28

Don't think i've ever used toner.. What does that do?

I have a highlighting kit in the cupboard but I think thats the wrong type of bleach? Think it's just the blue powdery stuffConfused

Okay....this might not work but personally I'd go straight to hair stripping bleach. L'oreal sell blonding creme that says it removes darker hair colour. Get a tinting brush and apply it just to the darkest bits until they are nearer to your roots colour. Do you strand test first and time how long it takes.

Then put on your perm colour but check that you can use it after bleaching. Colours like Nice n Easy you can't but I think you can with Loreal Excellence Creme. It will tell you on the packet at the back where it has the hair swatches and will say something along the lines of 'if you want to achieve the colour on the front of the packet use superblonding cream first'.....

Definitely get a warm toned brown if it all goes wrong. The warm kills green hue.

QueenieLovesEels · 29/05/2012 11:37

Also if you do get a bit of a brassy hue it is worth getting a silver toner shampoo. It is bright violet and counteracts yellow.

Thanks Queenie!!
