Can anyone suggest some make up for my daughter?

DD2 had her face painted a few years ago and had a bit of a reaction. Her face went bright red and was really swollen. Dr gave her piriton and it soon went down. He did warn us that subsequent reactions could be worse. She's avoided all make up till now but DD1 put a bit of normal make up on her last night and again she is bright red and swollen.

Now, she is coming up to her leavers prom, and really wants to be able to wear a little bit of make up. I know we're probably going to have to go and try little bits on her face and see if she reacts before we buy.

Can anyone suggest any brands we can try? Preferably high street stores, rather than internet.

Thanks!

I have a friend with the same problem. She swears by Clinique make up. Pricey, but everything else causes a reaction.

I'd suggest Liz Earle's new stuff.

Almay, I think it's a bit harder to get now, but some cheap shops seem to have it.

Mineral makeup tends to have fewer ingredients and is actually good for the skin. watch out for an ingredient called Bismuth Oxychloride which is in Bare minerals foundation (but not in the matte version I believe) which can irritate sensitive skin.

I use Lily Lolo, which doesn't contain Bismuth and you can order foundation samples first to check shade and that she doesn't react to it before ordering full size. they do starter kits that are good value too if it suits her.

there are other brands like Everyday Minerals, Jane Iredale and Inika but think they maybe more expensive. good luck

Poor DD, I get stress induced excema and had it on my face during my Alevels so know how she feels. Clinique is the only foundation that doesn't set it off and lasts a long time so worth the money in that respect. They also do a few anti redness products which can be used to cover up/prevent allergic reactions. Also they are fairly generous with samples.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have some clinique stuff myself, so that will be easy to try.
Poor girl, she's just getting to the make-up age.

Try anything new on the inside of her elbow first!

I sympathise, I am allergic to a lot of makeup brands too, and my DD2 and DD4 are sensitive too.

I personally swear by Clinique. Even Bare Minerals caused me to react. I have the Diorshow mascara, which is ok (although Dior foundations are a nightmare), and I use YLS touche eclat, but everything else is Clinique.

DD2 is sensitive but is ok with Clinique, most of the Benefit range, most of the Natural Collections range, and Boujouis.

From our experience the worse ones have been Rimmel, No 7 and Maybelline although I'm sure it varies from person to person. I also had a bad reaction to Clarins, but DD2 is ok with it.

valiumredhead · 29/05/2012 08:28

Bare Minerals, good as it is, contains bismuth which is a well known irritant, I think Lily Lolo doesn't contain it - worth emailing them to find out as their customer service is excellent.

Could you go down a different route and have your DD's eyelashes tinted black and have her eyebrows shaped really well? Maybe she could wear false eyelashes? And get her hair done really well at the hairdresser.

Make-up isn't always very beautifying for teens anyway.

I don't think that trying things on her inner elbow works.
Last night we put a smear of the stuff that blew her face up and got no reaction at all.
It just seems to be her face that reacts. She's never had any other skin problems.

Luckily she's got good skin (well, not for the last couple of days, Grin but generally) so doesn't really need too much.
