What to Wear for Graduation

Right, I graduate in July, and need some inspiration as to what to wear.

I normally don't "do" girly, but apparently it's one of those events where everyone goes all out, and I'd like to show my feminine side.

But I'm stuck for ideas.

My favourite colours are purple, pink and blue. Graduation gown thing, annoyingly, is black and red so think that rules those out.

I'm not doing heels, for fear of falling over on stage. I'm 5ft 2, size 16 at the moment but working on getting into a 14 or 12 by July.

Something cool ish like a dress but not a shirt as they will pin the gown to it and it will ride up. take plenty of safety pins!

I was going to say something with a button on the front as I had nothing to attach my gown sash to and ended up with it safety pinned to my t-shirt which pulled it all out of shape.

I work at a uni and am at graduations every year. The gowns are an arse to keep on right! I really second that having a button top to hook the loop at the front of the gown onto is useful and as they were designed I think. In addition to and def if you go buttonless, take a pack of hair pins and safety pins. Both are useful for keeping the gown put and hairpins keep the hat in the right place, especially if it's a bit loose. From our stage there are cameras that screen the ceremony for guests without tickets. It pans downwards, right into cleavages! Good plan on not too high heels, there is usually a heel incident. This year I am also graduating which is a bit odd. thinking on it, this year I prob don't want to wear my usual shirt/skirt thing and will want a dress. Hmm

Do you not have rules on what you can wear any more then? When I graduated (many years ago now) we had to wear a white blouse and black skirt. There may have been instructions on skirt length as well as I remember buying a long black skirt for the occasion. I remember what a pain the hood was as well, safty pins are essential!

Nope, no rules, and no actual helpful info, I only found out about the having buttons thing by looking online Hmm

Yes, our graduation is also being screened for those without tickets, will remember to get something with a high neckline!

I wore a black shirt dress to mine. Smart without being too stuffy under the gownand that all important button!

I go to graduation ceremonies most years (am an academic) and usually wear a dress, so don't always have a button. But the gown can be pinned to stay in place. No heels is a great idea - nearly all my students wear skyscraper heels and end up shuffling across the platform worrying that they are going to fall over. Someone actually did last year.
