Maxi skirt - stylish or old lady wear?

BoboksAndCot · 25/05/2012 10:40

I'm a SAHM and seem to spend my life in jeans! I'm so fed up and want to look a bit more glam (as you can do with baby sick in your hair and a toddler wiping her snotty nose on your sleeve!)

I've got huge boobs and find that maxi dresses don't fit properly over them, so what do we think of a maxi skirt? I'm really trying to avoid looking frumpy, it doesn't help I'm still pretty fat from overindulgence in pregnancy!

Or do any of you out there have any other suggestions? I'd be really grateful of some advice!

I don't think maxi skirts are old lady wear at all. I think they are very cool to wear Grin

MissFoodie · 25/05/2012 11:51

I wear maxi skirts all the time, with t-shirt and low belt, or vest and cardigan, or wrap around type top.
Always with flats though!

timeforawhine · 25/05/2012 12:02

I'm a huge fan and I was really relieved when they came back into fashion!

You don't need to bother with fake tan, or worry if your legs are silky smooth. I think you have to beware of some of the cheaply made ones though. I ordered one from H&M last year and put it straight on to go out for lunch. I only glanced at myself in the mirror before leaving(from the front) and was really happy with it as it was a friggin bargain at £6!!! However, later on I caught sight of myself from behind and to my utter embarassment, could see my BRIGHT green knickers and obviously, so could everyone elseBlush It was basically just too flimsy and even if i'd have worn skin coloured underwear you'd have still seen the outline of my bum and legs in the sunlight. Classy! It's in the bin now.

So to sum up, no I don't think that they're old ladyish, but you've got to pick them carefully. If you've got a bit of a tummy still, then don't be tempted to hike them up to under your boobs! I know it's tempting because you assume it will have a flattening affect, but actually it's the opposite.

What kind of shape are you?

ElizaDoMore · 25/05/2012 13:00

Love maxis but where do petite folks get them from?

Cherrypie32 · 25/05/2012 13:22

I am on the trail if a maxi skirt, particularly a jersey one. I am a size 14 bottom half and don't want anything too tiered or ruffly, or flowery, I like this one from Fat Face www.fatface.com/skirts-and-dresses/jade-jersey-maxi-skirt/invt/35133/?colour=Warm%20Khaki

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2012 14:04

Gap have a nice slim fitting jersey roll top one for £19. Splendid do some lovely ones but more £££.

MissFoodie · 25/05/2012 14:39

I have the gap one, can vouch for it

Indith · 25/05/2012 14:47

I have this on from H&M and I wear it loads. The smocking at the top means it is comfy over baby belly (have 11 week old). It is so easy to pull on and if a bit cold or I know I'll be hoicking my skirt up rambling around after the dcs I wear leggings under it. I'd love another one similar but different colour.

BoboksAndCot · 25/05/2012 15:05

Thank you! Will definately be going to look, was thinking of wearing one with a vest top and flat sandals like MissFoodie

timeforawhine I'm an hourglass I think, huge boobs, (usually Blush ) slim waist, and wider hips. Thanks for the hoiking up tip, I probably would be tempted to pull it right up!

MissFoodie · 25/05/2012 15:56

I wear with ballerinas/flat pumps or sandals (eg boden gladiator)

squoosh · 25/05/2012 16:05

Love maxi skirts, not if you're very short though as you may look a bit like Yoda from star wars.

I like them with a tshirt rather then a vest/cardigan combo. And always with flats.

timeforawhine · 25/05/2012 16:17

Bob, if you're an hourglass(lucky cowEnvyGrin) then you can probably get away with most style of skirts. I'm broad shouldered, but narrow hipped so I have to wear skirts which balance me out, so with a bit of a flare towards the bottom. Most maxi's are like that though, which is why I like them so much. Regarding the huge boobs(kind of relate), there is a company now which design dresses specially for well endowed ladies. Can't remember the name, worth a google, but basically you give them your dress size and also your bra size so you're it's not either too tight on top, but fits everwhere else, or fit perfectly on top but too baggy everywhere else. Only saying because you said that you'd like to wear maxi dresses in your OP.

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2012 16:39

I am 5ft and I most definitely do not look like yoda.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/05/2012 16:57

Link to gap one please?

I've got a lovely tube skirt from Topshop (am a short arse but really don't think I look like Yoda in it) but it's too thick for this weather. I'd like a lovely non-flouncy lightweight one, maybe striped or in a pale grey cotton/silk mix or something. Any ideas?

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2012 17:35

gap they also had a grey/indigo stripey version in store but seems to have vanished online.

Nice grey one

tunaday · 25/05/2012 18:07

MrsCampbell do you always have to shorten yours and if not where sells maxis suitable for 5'ers? I've given up even trying to find one now.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/05/2012 18:18

Thanks Mrs C - the Gap one looks v similar to my Topshop one. I don't like the grey one: it looks a bit too 'sportswear fabric' for me!

Gillybobs · 25/05/2012 18:21

Can't link as on iPad but I have amazing maxi skirts from Kaliko in navy and purple, down from 50 to 26, google Kaliko jersey maxi skirt. It's fab quality, drapery thick jersey with lovely fold over waistband

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2012 18:50

Tuna - I got a splendid one in navy and a velvet (brand not material) one with fold over waistband which you can adust to be the perfect length.

Also have a very slim fitting maxi dress in navy from dp's petite range.

MrsMeow · 25/05/2012 19:41

I've just bought one v similar to the gap jersey one from New Look, it was about the same price though I think and is slightly fuller. It's really comfy but still airy enough for the hot weather :)

MissFoodie · 25/05/2012 22:32

mrsc Grin at yoda

SaraBellumHertz · 26/05/2012 13:43

I always wear them and on the recommendation of MNers bought two from kaliko of all places which are lOvely-although sizing is quite generous and one from kettlewell which was more £££ but again lovely (and againg recommended by MNers)

Great with flats, vest and chunky jewellery

SaraBellumHertz · 26/05/2012 13:45

gillybobs just seen your post Grin we have the same skirt.
I also have the grey kaliko skirt with narrow waist band which is not as super flattering as the turn over waist one but still lovely

BoboksAndCot · 26/05/2012 20:39

I am now the proud owner of a black tiered maxi skirt Grin Thank you for the advice ladies!

timeforawhine Honestly it's not a shape to covet if you like shopping. People may say it's a true womanly shape but clothes shops seem to disagree hugely! If you're not slim with small boobs you're out Sad

OP posts:
mumat39 · 31/05/2012 23:39

Boboks, can I ask, where did you find your black skirt? I'm an hourglass and agree that it's not an easy shape to find clothes for.

I've been looking for one and have trawled alot of the online stores but haven't found anything yet.

I'm pleased you found one you like and hope you've enjoyed wearing it :)
