cleanser and moisturiser for difficult skin

I have been using Liz Earle C & P for the last 6 Weeks or so but have now broken out really badly round my mouth and on my neck. I NEVER get spots and it has knocked my confidence quite a bit, to the extent that I can't persist and hope it is just the skin purging phase.

So I need to get something else. I'm going to be near House of Fraser and Boots later today, so anything which I can acquire from there would be perfect.

I'm 30, my skin is dry combination I guess, but prone to extreme tightness if it's not treated well! Some products also make me itch/sting, eg the Aldi range, some No 7. I don't like highly fragranced products. No fragrance at all would be ideal, but if it is fragranced it has to be natural. Prefer organic stuff but will take anything that works at the moment! I think I just need need cleanser and moisturiser (one that will work for morning and night, as I use a separate sunscreen and don't want to spend a small fortune).

I will definitely consider Clinique, Clarins and Dr Hauschka. I have got on well with Olay in the past but found it irritating when I used it last night.

Budget up to 50 pounds in total.

Please help!

If it is making you break out after 4 weeks then you're past the purging stage really. I have only heard amazing things about the Emma Hardie cleansing balm. I'm currently saving up for it (£30ish) and using the boots botanics cleansing balm in the mean time which is ok, not amazing but i am a convert balm cleansers as I have such dry skin they don't make my skin tight at all. I'm still searching for my perfect moisturiser though so I can't really help there!

massistar · 22/05/2012 11:46

Dermalogica Ultra-Calming cleanser is lovely. Might be pushing the £50 to get a moisturiser as well though.

My friend had the exact same thing with Liz Earle. I swear by Clarins! My skin is dry so I use all the recommended products for dry skin. If you're going to House of Fraser they normally have a Clarins counter, you should ask for some free samples there! That's what I normally do when trying out new products -that way you don't waste your money on something which you don't like.

If you've got spots at the moment, get the Body Shop tea tree face wash. I keep it in for whenever I have breakouts -It's amazing!

I don't know what kind of routine you want etc., but I have problem skin, and I just use simple cleansing gel - it is quite gentle, and it doesn't dry out my face, and you can always follow it up with simlple face moisturiser, light.

I just wash my face three times a day, morning, night and once in between - and because the cleanser is quite light, it doesn't dry my skin out too much.

I have tried and experimented with different things over the years, wasted money on many things that haven't worked - and I always end up going back to this basic routine!

If you want, you can just do a special face cleanse before you sleep, like with any cream/cold cream and a hot wash cloth.

I was going to suggest Origins as there is one in my House of Fraser. Also an idea to contact Liz Earle, I wonder that they might refund you if it has upset your skin, the CS is very good.

EllieorOllie · 22/05/2012 13:41

Thanks for the replies.

I'm a bit wary of the Emma Hardie after the Liz Earle experience. Plus it's a whole new level of £££ for a cleanser!

I don't get on with Simple, have always found it makes my skin tight.

I only cleanse my face at night, I just use warm water in the morning. So really need something that is effective at taking make-up off.

Had anyone tried the Clinique take the day off balm stuff?

Steph which Clarins products do you use?

I love Origins but sadly there isn't one locally :(

I've got the Clinique take the day off balm stuff. It's not bad, but I have oily skin so not really for me, would definately suit dry skin more. Shame as there's loads left.
If you want it to try OP PM me and I'll send it on, it's just sat in my box trunk of stuff!

DinahMoHum · 22/05/2012 13:57

eucerin, hyaluronic filler.

its amazing

Karbea · 22/05/2012 14:23

hello,

I have awkward skin, it's dry, greasy, zitty (and a bit acne like at the mo tbh!).
I've been using Clinique blemish facewah and mositeriser (i was using the toner but it was drying my skin out really badly).
Yesterday I ordered LE, so slightly worried about your exp, my skin on clinique was good for about 4 months and is now worse than when i started!
I've also ordered Dr Haushik (sp?) as it's supposed to be very mild.
Last night I used this skinscrubs.co.uk/saturday-samples-3-step-blemish-complex/ I also had the samples, I think they were ok, my skin "felt" better, but after two goes (sample now run out) I have a big spot growing on my nose, I don't know if this is due to the Blemish Complex or whether it was on it's way anyway...

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish. Go forth, it is the work of angels.

ASByatt · 22/05/2012 16:52

Erm, rev, it's that precise product which seems to have caused the problems???

revolutionconfirmed · 22/05/2012 16:55

Ugh. I am a knob. Sorry, OP, I read your post and obviously took nothing in!

Graciescotland · 22/05/2012 16:58

Decleor is very gentle but great for make up removal. The toner (pink one) is the only one I've ever tried that doesn't sting.

Karbea · 22/05/2012 17:01

Decleor really didn't agree with me, my face ended up feeling like sandpaper... maybe i've just got rubbish skin :(

CakePigeon · 22/05/2012 17:47

OP, I really rate take the day off balm it isnt scented which i love but it's just a makeup remover, you will still need a cleanser as well

EllieorOllie · 22/05/2012 17:57

Thanks for the advice (particularly yours rev Wink).

I got the Dr Hauschka cleansing cream, and have samples to try of various Clinique and Dr H moisturizers. Also got the body shop tea tree stuff in case of break-outs.

Thanks for the info about take the day off cake. I need to remove make-up before using this cleansing cream so could be a good combo. Madam I will PM you.

PS Clarins was a no-go, too highly scented.

CakePigeon · 22/05/2012 18:33

Oh yes, does sound like a good combo, may add the dr hauschka to my list to try!

JemimaPuddle · 22/05/2012 21:29

CakePigeon the Emma Hardie balm is most definitely worth saving up for, it is the nicest thing I have ever used and has made a mahoosive difference to my skin. I love it. I previously used Decleor, Elemis, Alpha H & other high end skin care. I would pay any money for it!!
OP - apologies for the high jack x
