Alternatives to Eve Lomm Cleanser

My usual motto is "buy cheap, buy twice" but that has had to go to the wayside to make sure the mortgage is paid for! I've come to the end of my Eve Lomm oil based cleanser that has lasted for yonks but just can't justify replenishing my stocks.

Would any of you recommend any other oil based cleansers similar to it or am I going to have to bite the bullet and get it but not eat for a week?! ;)

Lancome do a balm to oil cleanser; Baume Eclat which is lovely. £20 I think.

QuinnFabray · 21/05/2012 10:34

Boots botanic do a similar type one for about £6. It's not as luxurious obviously, but it does the job.

My mum has used EL for years but budget constraints means she can't afford it. She went to her local ethnic store and bought the largest pot she could find of coconut oil (it's a solid at room temperature). She adds a few drops of various essential oils (I can ask which ones if you like) that help with more mature skin and dry skin. Her skin is looking really fantastic.

Failing that have you thought of doing the OCM (oil cleansing method - have a google)? Similar to what my mum does really.

Liz Earle isn't oil based - and I don't think it's all that tbh especially for removing make up - but has good reviews on MN.

Dropdeadfred · 21/05/2012 10:46

Liz Earle just melts my makeup including mascara and eyeliner - but yes, it's not oil based

F4ttyBumBum · 21/05/2012 11:27

Cheers for the suggestions :)

Given me plenty to have a look at when I'm next at the shops!

I've recently discovered Lush Ultrabland cleanser. I think it's one of the best cleansers I've ever used. Really rich and moisturising. take it off with a muslin. It's good stuff.

The Boots botanics stuff is good too but never seems to be in stock anymore.

Suggestion of Coconut oil is a good one too.

I was given a sample of Dr Hauscka cleanser the other week and thought it was very Eve Lomish - think it's about 12-15 quid. Will definitely buy some when I finish what I have - used twice a day & my skin was fab

MissFoodie · 21/05/2012 15:17

coconut oil, otherwise Balance Me, Antipodes and Suti all do oil based balms, plus don't contain vaseline like EL!

ComradeJing · 22/05/2012 04:19

BTW F4tty, I think if you look at price per ounce/use you may find that EL works out to be a similar price because it takes so long to go through a pot.

squoosh · 22/05/2012 14:22

Champney's do one similar to Eve Lom's. It's about £10 in Boots.

I personally hate Liz Earle's cleanse and polish, gives me bumps all over my skin.

Bran I tried that one too but found it oddly waxy. I ditched my almost full tub in the end.

The oils from there are brilliant though!

Peppin · 22/05/2012 15:51

I love Liz Earle, it takes all my make up off no probs. Though I use the No 7 oil-based eye make up remover first.

In the past when really budgeting I have used Cetaphil, which is easily available online, cheap, and is apparently what dermatologists tell their patients to use post-op as it is completely gentle. However it is a normal cleanser rather than oil based.

I saw that Champneys do an oil based cleanser and the rest of their skin care is quite nice so that might be good?

Or Shu Uemera do one that beauty editors rave about but I'm not sure about the price.

MissFoodie · 22/05/2012 17:18

comrade, yes, it's full of beeswax that's prob why, you want something either liquid or with shea butter to solidify it

cocolepew · 22/05/2012 17:21

I've started to use the NSpa cleansing stuff from Asda, from a fiver and my skin looks much better.

It has a warming cleanser, cleansing milk with muslim cloth etc.

knitknack · 22/05/2012 17:52

Emma Hardie is fantastic, I'm not sure it's any cheaper though? It's the cleansing balm and it's £34

QuinnFabray · 22/05/2012 17:54

I just bought the Super Drug cleanse and polish today for £5.99. Just going to use it in a little while. Will report back.

Shu Uemura cleansing oils are the dogs bollocks, they really are. Not too pricey, £28 but lasts yonks. Here

I use the cleansing beauty oil which is for dry skin, tis lushness. I want one of the Mamechiyo limited edition big ones though.

Fozzleyplum · 22/05/2012 20:08

I've tried all of the following, and they're all great alternatives to Eve Lom

  • Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish
  • Lush Ultrabland
  • oil cleansing method (which I reckon is as good as all the above and `practically free)

Superdrug has just started doing its own Liz-Earle style hot cloth cleanser at about half the price, but I haven't tried it.

QuinnFabray · 22/05/2012 22:20

I bought and tried the Superdrug Vitamin E hot cloth cleanser today. It cost £5.99 for 200ml and comes with a muslin cloth, which seemed good to me, not too scratchy or anything.

I really like it. I've tried Eve Lom, and wasn't that impressed by it. It was nice, but not worth the money. I've tried Liz Earle, I liked it a lot, but it made me break out. I've tried various other cream and balm cleansers, Clarins, Origins, Alpha H, all around about the £20 mark. The Clarins one is my favourite so far.

In terms of consistency, smell and performance the Superdrug one is great. Rates better than most of the more expensive ones I've tried. It's nice and thick, thicker than Liz Earle, and it smells nice, a bit like the Body Shop cocoa butter cream. It works really well, took my make up and mascara off easily, and left my skin feeling really clean and soft. No residue.

Looking at the ingredients, it's not great. A few too many parabens etc, but I'm skint, and you can't have everything. I can't afford to worry too much about parabens right now. This stuff is great.

Has anyone tried the Boots one, and can they compare it to the Superdrug one? If you use a £5 off voucher, it's only £4
