Knitwear that doesn't bobble

I have given up buying jumpers and cardigans, they always look crap after just a few washes.

I haven't got loads of money to spend, so what is the answer? Thermals? Confused

Avoid acrylic, i have noticed one of my cardigans has bobbled and its made from this. My cotton cardigans have no bobbles at all and have had about the same amount of wear as my acrylic one.

I've yet to find knitwear that doesn't bobble.
I gently shave mine. It looks brand new again. But you have to be very careful doing this1

I've had a couple of cardigans from Fat Face that haven't bobbled at all, even after several years' use. They're fine knit from 80% wool, 20% cotton. Agree that acrylic is the worst.

I find cotton knits and merino wool are the least likely to bobble.

I have a cashmere cardigan from M&S, which cost £60 (which is a lot cheaper than other places) and it has not bobbled or shrunk and i have had it for two years - they do the same ones every year.

Ooooh this is my big bugbear.......
Avoid acrylic at all costs. This is really difficult as most fashion/cheaper knitwear a contains acrylic.
Cashmere, although an expensive " luxury" fibre , bobbles like mad.....avoid it too, unless you can afford loads to rotate.
Cotton and polyester mixes, cotton and Lycra, cotton and nylon all ok in my experience as long as its a high cotton content. Not all really expensive either....just read fabric content labels, I am manic about this!
Merino wool is better than lambs wool.......I think LW is a looser twist(?) so bobbles more. Merino wool and cotton from Uniqlo and Gap are well priced and excellent quality. I have cardis from and Tesco Florence and Fred in cotton/nylon that have worn extremely well..........while cashmere from Pure looked like a rag and went in the bin.
Told you his was my bugbear!!!

Lakeland do a de-bobbler for about £5 which works really well on all kinds of fabrics. I've revived several jumpers and cardigans with it.

TIDDLYMUM · 19/05/2012 22:49

I have three Lk Bennett merino cardis which have gone bobblier than I would have expected given the £85 price tag.

My M&S cashmere bobbled like mad Sad

JeSuisMargaux · 20/05/2012 00:08

Try to handwash them insted of machine and low heat on the dryer. Use bathsoap instead of detergent, even the cheapest or brandless ones would look always brandnew. :)

I get mÅ· knitwear from gap, oasis and warehouse and have no bobbling problems but I do look after them by hand washing and drying flat.

scripsi · 20/05/2012 14:37

I've got a cashmere gap sweater which looks like new, I took someone's advice and put it in the freezer before wearing which (apparently, though I'm sceptical) may help reduce bobbling, though I think that new cashmere should pill naturally - it's not really bobbling in the way that acrylic/wool does. I handwash mine and dry them flat.

anniewoo · 20/05/2012 17:30

I always dry clean cashmere but m&s bobbles!

Beckamaw · 20/05/2012 17:42

Uniqlo for me. No bobbling!
