Grey hair help!

My hair is/was light mousy brown and for most of my adult life I have had highlights. Over recent years have had blonde, dark brown hi and low lights. Used to get this done every other cut, about once every 3 months - affordable, just and also the blonde didn't ruin my hair.

Unfortunately as I have hit my 40s my hair has grown in very grey! I noticed I wasn't getting dark roots when the highlights were growing out but instead they are mainly grey - and that looks worse! Really ageing I think.

Thing is I get my hair cut about once every 6 weeks and I can't afford to get it highlighted every 6 weeks - but what do I do about the grey? If I had one hair colour I guess I could do a home dye job easily but I won't be able to do a DIY highlight job well. Is there any kind of temporary rinse that might help? That might cover up the grey a bit inbetween the highlighting. Or am I going to have to increase my hair appointments?

I hate getting old!

Go lighter and the greys blend in!

Hmmmmmmmmmm not sure it suits me, though thanks for advice.

Was thinking one of those semi permanent colours which wash out after 8 washes or so. It says they blend the grey in and so would maybe mix with the highlights and the greys? Worth a try I suppose.

I would avoid any kind of block colour if you are covering grey tbh.

Mines darkish brown and has started going bit grey. I had some red and blonde highlights in but it started all looking too light, messy and washed out after a bit. The hairdresser advised putting a rich brown semi-permanent colour over the top which covered the grey and also perked up the highlights making them look a deeper and richer red colour. It's covered the grey and the semi permanent has lasted since Feb and is just starting to be ready for some more. I've been really happy with the effect that colour over the top of oldish highlights has had. I've not tried this at home though with a shop bought colour though.

Temporary doesn't really work on grey, there's some great home dyes now, nutrisse are good, give it a go :)

Go grey. It will suit your skin tone and you won't have massive hairdressing bills. Also there really isn't much stuff on the high street that really covers grey without trashing hair. It needs a fair amount of peroxide to stick.

Look at -going grey looking great Facebook page- for inspiration!

go grey. Do it! I am. I'm salt and pepper all over with all white at the front. I had been colouring all my hair dark for about 15 years. Had highlights and now going cold turkey. about 4cm of roots so far and feel soooo liberated.

I don't think I'm ready for it yet! What with the lines, the sagging etc, the grey hair is just a bridge too far!
