What do you think about fringes? Am contemplating one

I have long layered hair and have spent a long time growing out a fringe so it's now below chin level. My hair is very adaptable and I like to change it so sometimes I curl it, have it wavy or poker straight andi get lots of compliments on it.

However I find that most of the time I tuck it behind my ears and it just doesn't flatter my face like that so I'm thinking that I out to go back to having a fringe. My concerns that it will mean I have fewer options for styling it as I want to avoid that curly hair with straight finge look.

Any ideas? I'm mid forties if that makes any difference.

I used to have a fringe for a long time and grew it out, it's so much easier! Fringes are irritating lol. It'd stay without, I tuck behind my ears and you can still do it when you have a fringe, its still looks weird!

I always thought fringes are cute and really make someone look younger. My spanish teacher at school had awful forehead lines and she had a full fringe which simply covered them it made her look around early 30s when she was well into her 40s, I'd definitely go for it.

I want a fringe but I have wavy hair and the first sign of humity or drizzle and I'll be looking less than slick.

I have bra strap length layered hair and grew my last fringe out when I was about 20 (am now nearly 40) - i bit the bullet and had one cut in a few weeks ago - best thing EVER. I would honestly say it's knocked 10 years off me. I have been lucky that it seems to fall nicely without too much faff but honestly, if I've slept funny and I have a bit of a TinTin thing going on, I just comb it with a wet comb to flatten it down and its done.

I also used to constantly have my hair tucked behind my ears, which I don't do anymore so my hair hangs better.

Do it! You can always grow it back out again :)

Romy, I'd like to think my fringe does the same for meSmile

Fringe covers forehead lines. No brainier!!

Just had a fringe put in for first time ever. Have just below jaw length Bob slightly shorter at the back.

On the plus side have never had so many compliments about my hair.
On the downside my hair is naturally curly and gets straightened. Sweaty summer forehead may make fringe maintenance interesting.

I had a fringe cut a few month ago. Totally love it! I have longish hair which is normally pulled back in a pony tail so the fringe give me a "style" even when I'm totally rushed.
Had loads of complements about it too. "have you lost weight? Wow you you younger"

It's a little more work then not having a fringe. It does need a proper brush in front of the mirror ever morning and needs a bit of a tweek if we've been in the rain and wind.

I like fringes. I had mine cut back in for exactly the same reason as you. Without it I'd just push my hair behind my ears all the time and my face would look really bare.
I have the same issue about wavy hair/straight fringe but you can always put the rest of your hair up if you can't be bothered with it. Or clip the fringe back if you're going for a curly look.

As soon as I get one I regret it after a week. Try a clip in fringe. This one looks natural.

Mombojombo · 16/05/2012 09:35

I love a fringe. Mine's currently a full job, slightly arched in the middle. I've also done the opposite and had a Bettie Page, sidey sweep, asymmetrical, I've done them all.

You can buy clip in fringes if you want to see how you'd look.

Also, mini-straighteners/finishers are your friend. No 'line' where you first apply heat, just a neatly tamed fringe!

LadyWord · 16/05/2012 13:53

I love having a fringe and I do think it makes you look younger/better, especially if you have a high forehead. And as you get older your hair can get a bit thinner and higher at the front, making the fringe an even more effective solution. With the right kind of fringe you can do chunky or sideswept.

I've met two women recently who had me itching to say "YOU NEED A FRINGE!" but I didn't obv.

IslaValargeone · 16/05/2012 13:58

I had a fringe put in and had loads of compliments, and it is certainly more flattering.
Although a fringeless look is quite fashionable, I really don't think it's a style that everyone can carry off. I look like Ozzy Osbourne without one and really quite harsh and aged.
If it looks a bit iffy in the morning ,it's nothing that a wet comb can't sort out, not to mention that after a certain age it covers forehead lines.

Right then you've persuaded me am booking a haircut.
