Can anyone speak to me about spectacles?

I've worn contacts for years but have started having a couple of issues

I hate hate hate wearing glasses but I need to get some

I've tried on 1000 pairs and look peculiar in them all

Most seem to gave a rectangular frame and just don't suit me. I saw a beautiful woman with some great ones, I shouldn't stopped her but didn't. They were largish, more rounded and slightly hornrimmed, I think is te word Confused

Can anyone chuck some glasses recommendations or suggestions at me?

I've got a small head and face but am quite fat. My chin is a bit weak. I'm dark blonde - if any of that matters :)

I have got these in tortoiseshell and I love them, although they are men's so might be a bit big for you. I found loads of the women's styles to be rectangular, which is a bit old fashioned I think, so men's might be worth a peek.

Ray ban have done a nice range of glasses, they are not as rectangular and boring as some of the others. I also saw a lovely Chanel pair but they were a ridiculous price!

I had very similar pink nhs ones as a child

I hadn't thought of looking at mens

I like these but a) they're sold out and b) I really need to try them on

Cutler and Gross have great frames.

Including vintage type ones.

They have a shop in Kensington in a small street opposite Harrods, on the off chance you are in London.

Far far from London in a town without anything cooler than Specsavers

Having some names to google is good though. I wasn't even aware of names to look out for

If I can see what kind of styles I'm leaning towards I might becabke to find an independent or suchlike who might stock something a bit different from rectangular Specsavers style ones

Who's your optician?

The assistants should be able to show you what styles should suit you.

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 18:41

My last lot were from D&A. they had a decent range too (I was surprised and I am very fussy and hate wearing glasses). Generally you can get the framed in different colours and that can really make a difference. Look out for the sepciual offers so you can get a couple of different styles.

Mombojombo · 15/05/2012 18:45

Specsavers have upped their game recently. They've got a Gok range which is hit and miss, but have introduced some cats eye frames (of which I've got a pair - they're by Red or Dead) and much more variety. D&A/Boots yet to catch up as far as my local stores go.

Depending on your prescription you could also try online at glasses direct or somewhere. I'm too blind, but DH gets his from there and they're really nice and dirt cheap.

Magicglassesfairy · 15/05/2012 18:47

I have a small face and have bought from the childrens range of glasses in the past. My optician is a good independent and has someone who advises you on styles, shapes etc to suit you. They will also advise you re which frames work best for your presecription e.g. if strong then smaller frames better; I can't have rimless etc etc
If you google face shape and glasses I am sure there are sites that suggest which shapes suit different faces and then work from there.

Mombojombo · 15/05/2012 18:53

Oh, and a good rule of thumb is to have the top rim of the frame roughly mirror the arch of your eyebrows. Apparently - assistant in an opticians many many years ago told me that.

teejwood · 15/05/2012 20:40

i HATE shopping for specs and my last pair were a disaster, but i've had to stick with them as it has taken me a bloody eternity to find another pair i actually did like. so i feel your pain.

disclaimer - i have not used this site www.vision2you.co.uk/ but i did price my new glasses there and realised i could have saved a fortune
they have a huge number of frames - if you see a style you like click on it for other colours. you might find something there, which might at least give you an idea of what you are looking for?
good luck!

cardoon · 15/05/2012 20:56

I have these, which I love - and these are quite Harry Potter like the ones you're after

polyhymnia · 15/05/2012 22:43

I'm another long term lens wearer who now has to wear specs some of time but I'm much happier about it than I ever dreamed I would be because glasses have been fashionable for last few years and there are now such great frames around. I have Chanel at moment. Was browsing in my opticians yesterday and agree with another poster that Ray Ban are now doing some good frames. You do need to get advice at the opticians on something that will suit your face and also take along a friend or DH as I do for final choosing session.

polyhymnia · 15/05/2012 22:48

PS From what I saw yesterday in my central London independdnt opticians, there is also a bit if a trend towards the slightly more rounded shapes which you prefer.

justabigdisco · 15/05/2012 22:55

Are you anywhere near manchester? My optician there is great.
