Coconut oil making my skin dry

itdidntworkout · 15/05/2012 10:16

I've been using it day and night for about six weeks and so far the results have been wonderful, with plump hydrated skin. However, now it appears to making my skin very dry and a bit sandpaper-ish.

I don't want to change, but I might try something else and go back to it.

Anyone else experienced this?

what kind are you using?

itdidntworkout · 15/05/2012 10:32

Organic virgin coconut oil (the good stuff)

I've had the same with and with my hair it just makes it a strange texture. My skin is sensitive though so that might be the reason. I'd suggest cliniques moisturising gel - by far the best moisturiser i've used - it's light, smells cleans, doesn't make skin greasy and really really hydrates skin well.

Try the stuff from Waitrose with added fit E - gorgeous stuff!

MissFoodie · 15/05/2012 11:23

that's weird??????
However, you should be using something else, apart from the coconut oil, your skin needs water too. I would use the coconut oil at night and something else in the morning, a light, water based serum/cream.
I posted suggestions on someone else's thread about water based serums, not sure where it is

itdidntworkout · 15/05/2012 11:51

thanks everyone.

Miss Foodie, yes, it's weird, especially as I've had such good results for so long. During the day I also use a tinted sunscreen. I didn't know that your skin needed water too. I thought you just had to lock in your own skin's water. I shall search out your comment on the other thread.

Presumably you are removing the oil with warm water, therefore it's getting water.

valiumredhead · 15/05/2012 11:59

And you need to drink water for good skin - lots of it!

MissFoodie · 15/05/2012 12:02

you need both water and oil, in varying proportions depending on weather/time of month/hangover, etc
try a water based something with hylauronic acid and/or aloe vera

whackamole · 15/05/2012 12:11

I read somewhere that even if you use oil to cleanse you need something else to moisturise. i'm using a lush cream as it's nice and natural.

valiumredhead · 15/05/2012 12:29

I cleanse with sweet almond oil - wash off with warm muslin cloth then moisturise with a bit of almond oil or wait rose coconut oil - have got the best skin I have had in years.

itdidntworkout · 15/05/2012 15:28

I use Ren cleansing balm, followed by coconut oil. I didn't know I had to use something with water in it. I always thought manufacturers were being cheapskates when the main ingredient was aqua in a moisturiser!

I'm really happy with the cleanser, so perhaps I'll change my moisturiser and use the coconut oil on a ad hoc basis.

itdidntworkout i had the same problem, it was weird! my face felt hot and dry then it went scaly across the bridge of my of my nose and cheeks when i stopped using it my skin went back to normal after a week.

I googled until i found a possible reason and its something to do with oil absorbing your natural oil and also giving your skin the message that it doesn't need to produce its own oil.
i found an article about the chemical make up of coconut oil too - i'll post you the link: www.skincaretalk.com/t/20689/any-truth-in-coconut-oil-being-drying

TracyK · 15/05/2012 16:28

What sunscreen are you using? I started using demalogica pure light and got the same reaction as you. Conversely I used coconut oil to calm and moisturise the dry and red skin.

itdidntworkout · 16/05/2012 09:29

I use Roche Posay tinted spf50. Have been using it for two years - never had a reaction or got burnt. The coconut oil is the new thing for me. It was working so well and then boom, bad skin!

Miss Foodie - does this mean that I use just pure shea butter on my face, it will have the same effect as coconut oil as it doesn't have water in it?

Does Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice have water in it? Is it okay to use neat on the skin?

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is good, though it also makes sin dry. Oil base always makes skin dry try looking for VCO in lotion (preparation), we have that in the market mostly imports form SEA or Philippines.

MissFoodie · 20/05/2012 12:51

No, don't use Shea Butter, it's much heavier, almost waxy - for make up removal Coconut Oil is the best.
ALoe Vera Juice, do you mean the stuff that's sold for drinking? if so then no, wouldn't do you any harm but wouldn't help at all either. If you want to use Aloe Vera you can buy it in gel form which is ok, but I would still buy a proper face gel/cream tbh.

itdidntworkout · 20/05/2012 14:28

I don't need anything for make up removal, just want a glorious night time treatment. Proper unrefined shea butter isn't waxy. It's firm when at room temp, but like coconut oil, when rubbed between the hands, it turns to an oil. My question is, that like coconut oil, shea butter it doesn't have any water in it, so do you think it will make my skin dry?

I also like avocado butter. I melt it down, temper it for 20 mins in a bain marie, then pour into sterilised jars. It's thickness is like vaseline, but when you put in on your body after a bath, it's sumptuous! You have to temper avocado butter, like shea butter, otherwise it can be gritty. Add essential oils to suit your needs.

(I buy all my butters and oils from Akoma).

Re. aloe vera - I didn't make myself clear at all, did I? I did mean 99% aloe vera gel. Alternatively, I was watching a couple of youtube clips about people keeping an aloe vera plant in the bathroom, cutting off a stem, using the gel straight from the plant and then keeping the cut stem in the fridge and using until finished. Has amazing effects, apparently.
