How many slings did you buy?

So Mokimoo is now 10 months old. I've been carrying him around since day 1 but the debate of what is the best sling or carrier rages on. A piece of fabric or a harness? Ergonomic or back breaker? But none are stylish or elegant... Any suggestions?

I've got a rose & rebellion sling in secret garden. DD is 10 months as well as I'm still carrying her really comfortably. She's on my front most of the time but you can use it on your back as well. I have carried DD1 who is nearly 4, on my back comfortably for short distances.

HipHopOpotomus · 14/05/2012 15:22

I used Baby Bjorn for first 6 months. For bigger babies it's not great.

I have a Baba Sling but never got to grips with it, and I don't think it distributes weight very well as it is cross body. It's OK for hip carrying a sitting baby.

With DD2 I was given an Ergo Carrier by a friend (it had done at least 3 children before me and is still going strong). I can carry DD2 at 12 months for a while in it on my front and probably all day on my back. Weight is well dispersed & they are well made & designed. I will pass this on after we have finished with it. I think they have quite good resale value too

I love wraps.

I own a pouch which the vomity boys have not liked but dd loved, a ring sling which I hate but dh uses sometimes and a few wraps. I have a lovely didymos in a fabric I love, a stretchy wrap with a flowery print which is convenient for school run to pop him in and out without having to re-do the sling though ds2 is starting to get a bit heavy for it and I have a plain cream Mexican weave which is nice for summer and also for days when I don't want my sling to clash with my clothes, In an ideal world I would have a much bigger stash and be able to clour coorinate all the time Grin. I am def a wrap person though :)

bigbadbarry · 14/05/2012 15:33

I ended up with 4 or 5 - I did buy and sell a few along the way to end up with my core stash! I'm afraid babies are not stylish and elegant (and they are a bugger for creasing whatever you have on underneath) - but they are cute so people look at the baby and not you ;)

Think we had 3 - Baby Bjorn, Moby and Connecta. Got most use out of Connecta. Managed to sell them all on eBay when finished with them too. Wink

choceyes · 14/05/2012 16:03

I have a Connecta which I used nearly daily with my 21 month old. Also had a Moby when they were small but never really got the hang of wrapping so sold it on Ebay for over half it's value. I love my Connecta!

I used baby bjorn first time round up to 6 months, and had a Kangaroo carrier which was great for tiny babies. I used my Ergo from 6 months with my daughter and very occasionally she still uses it now (days out in London, airports) she is 4 years old. With my son he was mainly in the ergo I got the infant insert so was able to use it from birth. I found the ergo much more comfortable to use that the baby bjorn so that didn't get used at all second time round. He is 2 now and still rides on my back in the ergo when I don't want to take the pushchair. I have nothing but praise for the ergo and would always recommend it as my first choice carrier.

Well I've got a Close ( was fab when DS was under 6 months), a Front Back and Sides Mei Tai, a Napsack Mei Tai, and a size 7 Didymos in Hortensia. I might be a about to get a pouch sling. I'd also quite like either a short wrap or a ring sling that was a bit fancy for a wedding I'm going to.

I've tried the Soft structured carriers but find the Mei Tai's much more comfortable.

I've tried to go for slings that either work for my colours ( the hortensia is purple and blue) or unisex. Also I've only started to back carry without a coat on now I've lost a stone!

I do find that sling wearing limits the outfits I can wear.

pootlebug · 14/05/2012 16:36

I think a wrap can be elegant. Have a look at some of the pictures on Ellevill's website or the Diva Milano website. Much more elegant than a buckle carrier imo. Of course, you need several wraps, in order to be able to match different outfits Grin

aerynsun · 14/05/2012 16:40

I moved on to the hippy chick hip carrier from 10 months - so much more comfortable and less faffing. Still use it now at 18 months occasionally

hazchem · 14/05/2012 16:56

Just had to add this for elegant sling wearing

ScrambledSmegs · 14/05/2012 17:02

Baby bjorn for about 4 months, till my back couldn't take it any more. Then Ergo and couldn't believe how much better it is. We still carry DD in it now on our backs or hips, she's 2.2.

This time I'm probably going to get a Moby wrap for the first few months, as I've read research saying how baby bjorn style carriers are bad for very young babies hips.

Mombojombo · 14/05/2012 18:12

Had an EllaRoo ring sling which I could never get to grips with (but sold on eBay for near cost price - they really retain value!), then a Close/Caboo which I loved until very recently. DS is just too much of a chumper, so I've moved onto Mei Tais. Just ordered a Lenny Lamb and thinking about a custom Melkaj for 'special'. Some of the Melkaj fabrics are lush - definitely non-too hippy lala.

I'm becoming a junkie, so staying away from wraps for now. Can see where that will lead me!

caffinequeen · 14/05/2012 18:50

I moved on from a moby when DD was about 10 months and got a babyhawk, v.comfy and they have lots of different patterns to pick from!

If I was starting again with a newborn O would get a moby but get the colour I really like not a dark one in the vain Hope that DH would use it too!

PotteringAlong · 14/05/2012 18:54

I've got a boba wrap and a connecta and have many a happy week plundering various slings out of the north east sling library collection!

DanceToTheIslandBeat · 14/05/2012 19:01

I mistakenly bought a Babasling and a mothercare Bjorn copy before DD was born and didn't get on with either of them. Then a friend gave me a freedom pouch which was ok for feeding but not great for carrying. Then I discovered my Moby wrap and was converted to slings Grin! That Moby has been worn by me for 2 DCs and by many of my friends too. I bought a Victoria Slinglady wrap to have a fancy panel, and then have moved on to my gorgeous Rose & Rebellion which i also love and would highly recommend!

BuntyCollocks · 14/05/2012 19:07

I used a moby wrap to begin with, and now have a rose and rebellion. I LOVE my r&r.

Ambi · 14/05/2012 19:08

I had a babasling, didn't like it so passed onto another mner.

I like the simplicity of the coorie sling.

Pascha · 14/05/2012 19:24

I started with a Connecta then moved to a Butterfly because I couldn't get the hang of back carrys.

otchayaniye · 14/05/2012 19:46

i have two daughters (3.5 and 9 months) and have never owned a pram so have used slings throughout pregnancies, post both elcs.

i used moby wraps initially. in black

then progressed to girasol woven in grey stripes (not fond of juggler chic or chintzy hippy style) currently using this alit for back carries

own also a calin bleu lightweight wrap in blue as we used to live in singapore and it was too hot for thick wovens

my husband favours ergos (black), and i like it for feeding to sleep as you can readjust easily once the baby is sleeping.

we also used a boba carrier when eldest was 2-3 as it's long in the body.

i know what you mean, so many carriers are unstylish, but i love my clothes and fashion and although i make concessions (wear flats, don't use my chanel handbags now) to slingwearing i found blacks, greys in wraps and they don't look unfashionable as such.

babybjorns, though widely available, aren't good.
