Please can I ask some advice about oil cleansing? I am a long time lurker (and a huge fan of Mrs Martin...) and finally took the plunge this weekend with oil cleansing to try and cure my long standing hideous dermatitis.

So (deep breath)...
I am using 100% Neals Yard Jojoba Oil. On reading all the threads it seemed that most people whose skin went crazy with oil cleansing were using EVOO so I avoided that. So far so good really. I have nothing much to report (skin definitely smoother which helps putting makeup on, and no new spots which may or may not be a coincidence, but all dermatitis still there). But what do you moisturise with after the oil cleansing?

My skin is getting some very dry patches so I think that I still need to moisturise, but should I just use some more of the jojoba oil or something else? Also, does the fact that I am getting dry patches mean I should use a different oil (sweet almond?) or am I doing something wrong?

many thanks!

I'm not a guru but I do oil cleanse and have sorted an OCM regime for DP who has totally different skin to me...

Jojoba oil is best for oily, acne prone skin. Is that what you have? If not it's probably way too drying, if your skin is a bit oily you could keep some jojoba in your mix but add something else less harsh.

My skin is very dry so I use avocado oil which is very hydrating and moisturise with argan oil and sometimes avocado.

How often are you OCMing? What skin type do you have and what do you use between OCM facials?

Hi Mrs Lettuce

Thank you for replying :-) I have been doing it every night - is that too much? I have some sweet almond oil so I could use that? Oh, and am using a very dilute apple cider vinegar toner? My skin is a bit nuts - seems to be oily and flaky, with hormonal acne and dermatitis which all started after DD was born. Have tried steroid and antibiotics and am now going the all natural route!

My skin is definitely dry - I will get some avocado oil (can it be tesco's or should it be posher?) and try that. If I don't do OCM every day what do I do on the other days? I could do a honey wash, but then will definitely need a moisturiser afterwards.

I found sweet almond was best and I don't need to moisturise after. If I did I would probably just use a dab of the oil.

Not a guru but been OC for a couple of years now. I started as post PG my skin became ulta sensitive to cleansers. Even so called 'sensitive' cleansers irritated my skin. OCM has worked really well for me.

I have combo skin and use GRAPE SEED oil (lovely & light) with 20% castor oil (for dry skin use less castor). I started out with olive oil which was fine but the grape seed is lighter & scentless.

I do OC every night and I moisturise afterwards about 50% of the time. Sometimes I use rosehip oil and other times a Clinique night cream.

I think the trick with OCM is to spend time massaging the oil in, & nice hot flannel to remove.

I would give your skin some time to adapt - do it every day and allow 3-4 weeks for things to settle down & see how you go.

Not sure about using toner though. I don't.
