Attractive, non single-boobage maternity bras for big boobs?

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 14:29

Ok, so I realise this could very well have gone in Pregnancy, but I was hoping that the S&B ladies would have more range, if you know what I mean.

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and can no longer wear my pre-pregnancy bras. All my maternity bras from DC1 pregnancy have gone in the bin, as they were ugly, worn-out and gave me monoboob. Probably my own stupid fault for buying bog-standard M&S though.

I went maternity bra shopping yesterday and gave up in the end as everything I tried was either uncomfortable or gave me the predicted monoboob. I usually shop in Bravissimo as I'm a 30F when not pregnant, so I may just be used to the fantastic support their bras give me and I can't have right now without underwire, but there must be a brand out there which is

a) comfortable
b) supportive
c) attractive?

I'm currently wearing an old Elle Macpherson nursing bra which is ok, but not wonderful under clothes as it protrudes out of most of my tops, even the ones which are higher cut.

Please help me out, S&B gurus. My norks are in your hands Wink

Watching this with interest, I'm 20 weeks and really struggling to find anything remotely attractive or comfortable in my size... And the bloody things just keep getting bigger.

tethersend · 13/05/2012 14:42

I am still wearing underwired bras- albeit in a bigger cup and back size- at 37 weeks. Can't get on with non underwired ones.

UML · 13/05/2012 14:43

Not attractive as such, but very very comfortable

www.figleaves.com/uk/product.asp?product=Emma-Jane-Maternity-bra&product_id=EJ-328&size=&colour=Black&src=fspk231220113296289#BVRRWidgetID

I read some comments on there, but it has never given me a monoboob, always been very comfortable and I have the nursing versions too - in fact, thats all I have been wearing for the last few years!

I will also bookmark my pace in this thread for attractive ones... but for comfort, the above bra is really good.

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 14:43

God, they do don't they Shock And then you give birth, and they go from massive to OhMyGodNoOneElseCanFitInTheSameRoomAsMyNorks.

Very sexy, this pregnancy lark Hmm

I just saw there are very few sizes left (probably due to sale price) but this model is in other online shops too (I think even tesco do it now)

Tanyaaah · 13/05/2012 14:46

I just got a Hot Milk nursing bra and its very supportive and structured without being underwired. I'm 38 weeks though and you're not meant to get fitted until 36 weeks as your ribcage will expand more by then.
Maybe they do maternity bras too though, it is very pretty!

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 14:46

Really, tethers? I'm very jealous, I find underwire horribly uncomfortable right now. I did try Bravissimo for a bigger size of my usual bra, but we had to give up due to the pain Sad

Thanks UML, that looks really nice. They don't have any larger sizes though, so I may do some trawling around the internet for somewhere with more stock.

Tanyaaah · 13/05/2012 14:47

But I am only 34dd at this late stage...so might not work as well for a larger breasted woman!

GobblersKnob · 13/05/2012 14:48

This is great on and looks fab under clothes, does a fantastic lift and separate job Grin.

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 14:48

Tanyaaah, where did you go to be fitted for HotMilk bras? I would love to find a shop that stocks them, rather than having to buy off the internet.

SpeckleDust · 13/05/2012 14:49

I liked the lace underwired Anita ones. Comfy, supportive and vaguely pretty.

tethersend · 13/05/2012 14:50

I find bravissimo bras really uncomfortable even when not pg TBH.

Try brastop

tethersend · 13/05/2012 14:51

I should add, I'm currently a 38H

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 13/05/2012 14:51

Are you sure you can't do underwire? Bravissimo aren't necessarily the best at maternity/nursing bras IME. I wore underwired bras straight through both pregnancies. I went to Rigby and Peller and they advised a couple of styles (normally recommended to the more mature woman to avoid underarm bulge!) where the underwiring went quite wide. They were great.

UML · 13/05/2012 14:51

The hotmilk ones are pretty, I did buy a few but they never quite fitted me properly for some reason... you could always try a few (but they are pricey too)

A good maternity (and nursing) bra should have wide-ish straps and band to make it comfy. I find this works if the material is cotton, with pretty bras which are sometimes not always cotton, it makes you sweaty, but that is my own experience!

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 14:53

I saw this yesterday in Bravissimo and wanted to try it as it was so pretty, but they didn't have my size. However, it doesn't look like it fits the model too well, which is a touch worrying.

Is it better to go maternity specific, or is it ok to buy soft cup at this stage? Aargh, so difficult!

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 14:55

Ah, see I'm so slow at typing that my question has already been answered!

I will try Rigby and Peller, thanks YoullLaugh

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 13/05/2012 14:57

I know, pricey. But you only need two on heavy rotation. I felt it was a worthwhile investment for comfort and two breasts instead of a matronly bosom!

UML · 13/05/2012 14:58

I have heard loads of good stuff about rigby and pellar, apparently they have a brilliant fitting service (really important!) - I have always felt a bit intimidated by their shops though!

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 15:02

Yes, me too UML. I think I might buy one of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=tiara&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1024&bih=654&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnsr&tbnid=RoIZHNkjScXOeM:&imgrefurl=collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O152938/tiara-manchester-tiara/&docid=724p-Lo6Bgx7oM&imgurl=media.vam.ac.uk/media/thira/collection_images/2006BH/2006BH8552_jpg_ds.jpg&w=355&h=355&ei=SL6vT47tOJD-8QOVzODHCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=760&vpy=171&dur=212&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=158&ty=122&sig=111246698219417076036&page=1&tbnh=137&tbnw=127&start=0&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0,i:148" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">these to help me look the part in R&P!

Some great suggestions from everyone so far, thanks very much! I'm going to buy a few and hopefully find the right bra for me. For now, of course, until I need a bigger size in a few weeks Hmm

tethersend · 13/05/2012 15:02

Thanks.

Tanyaaah · 13/05/2012 15:07

I went here but it's in Leeds. They were very good.

ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 15:14

Hmm, bit far for me! I just checked online though and it seems a maternity boutique near me stocks Hot Milk so maybe they will be able to help.

OP posts:
ScrambledSmegs · 13/05/2012 15:15

Right, off out to try some more bras on. Fun fun.

I am currently 24 weeks, a 32G and am still wearing well fitted comfortable normal underwired bras. I will only switch to non wired ones when I am super massive and the wire starts to dig into my bump! This was fine with DC1 - although the nursing bras I changed into were a bit yuck.

Then eventually I found some lovely underwired nursing bras when I was actually breastfeeding - will make the switch straight to these in pregnancy this time.

this one is supposed to be good
