Chicken skin on legs? Cluck.

My skin is pale and sensitive and I simply don't tan...I don't try anymore and haven't for years. Fake tan looks terrible...I am whiter than white. I dont mind this but I DO mind the chiken skin on my legs...my pores seem visible all the time and I have those little bumps...is it due to ingrowing hairs?

I have a few of those but even the pores which are clear are always visible...and slightly raised. What can I do to get that lovely smooth skin?

I shave...I use cocoa butter moisturiser...in the past I have noticed an improvement with baby oil and scrubbing my skin daily with aa body puff thing...but I dont have time these days!

Is there any tip? Advice? Summer's nearly here!

It's a very common skin condition called pilaris kerastasis. My understanding is that the skin produces too much keratin which means that the hair cannot get through the skin causing the bumps and inflammation.

It's slightly unsightly but there's varying beliefs on what does and doesn't 'cure' this.

For me, a moisturizer such as flexitol does the job- but the key appears to be moisturising very regularly and exfoliating.

(Who has the bloody time for these things!!!?)

MrsLettuce · 11/05/2012 00:56

what mrscumberbatch said and yes, Flexitol or another high urea cream can really help.

anniewoo · 11/05/2012 07:22

Some flexitol has 25% urea which must be good for the condition

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 11/05/2012 07:40

Oh thank you! Flexitol eh? Right....I will be off to look for some today!

25% urea? So would weeing in the shower actually help?

I get this too op, Tis crap

bubble2bubble · 11/05/2012 09:45

NeoStrata Glycolic body lotion - not particularly nice smell or feel but very good results

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 11/05/2012 10:58

bronze I thought urea was some extract of cow udder...could be wrong though!

bubble where is that from? Is it expensive?

It's found in urine but
May be elsewhere too, I know they can make it artificially

GobblersKnob · 11/05/2012 12:16

Body brushing and flexitiol works wonders.

ReactionaryFish · 11/05/2012 12:22

Both ds and I have kp on our upper arms. One thing which really improves it is prolonged exposure to sun and sea water on holiday ... but given that this is not poss most of the time, i find we've both got much better since switching to Pears soap.
I accept no responsibility if this doesn;t work for you.

bronze · 11/05/2012 12:59

GK- can you reccomend a brush as I seem to buy loads of loofahs and brushes and scratchy gloves and theyre all either too harsh or too soft

snowmummy · 11/05/2012 13:18

I've tried flexitol but it stinks!

bubble2bubble · 11/05/2012 21:20

TheHouse I can buy it locally in a pharmacy but Have seen it online/ EBay as well. It's £24 normally I think.

busyboysmum · 11/05/2012 21:58

I have this as well and have bought a body brush and flexitol so will report back with results. I hate it and have 3 weeks before we go to Portugal to sort it out. Good luck.

LolaAnn · 11/05/2012 23:31

Seriously, if it is KP - take some vitamin D3 along with K for absorbtion. I mean a lot of vitamin D, especially if you don't see much sun. It completely smoothed my chicken bumps that I've had for 10 years + not to mention fixed a lot of my other health problems x

zadigeist · 12/05/2012 11:12

a decent bit of fake tan does wonders, can't believe every type looks terrible. the Johnson's holiday skin etc are really good and easy to use.

bronze · 12/05/2012 12:35

I find it catches in the pores/raised bits and looks awful

ScaredyDog · 12/05/2012 13:02

I've got this too :(

Just shaved my legs using a shaving oil, then used Loreal Microdermabrasion scrubby stuff, then in a bit I'll go and put some Garnier Hydralock moisturiser on, it has 5% urea.

I really need to get on top of it as I've got two holidays coming up and the skin on my legs looks worse than ever :(

I've never found sunlight to help really, and I'm really pale too. Fake tan does cover the redness though. Will try vitamin D, thanks LolaAnn.
