Anyone want to help me find a shalwar kameez or even maybe a sari please!

I have a (hindu) wedding to go to, problem is I'm nearly 6 foot. Given that a sari is normally only 42" or so and I have trouble finding trousers at the best of times, what on earth am I going to wear!

It's a relative from dh family getting married and I'll be meeting lots of family who I've never met before (despite me and dh having been together over 9 years) so I really want to get it right!

I think you need to find a shop local to you, I'm sure they'd be able to make something for you or recommend a tailor and supply the fabric.

I'd ask the relative for a recommendation.

cheeseandmushroomtoastie · 10/05/2012 14:59

A sari would still fit you, you may not be able to wear heels though, but it would still look good. A local shop is the best bet, as you can try stuff on and see what fits your shape, and what colours work best for you etc. They can also show you to tie the sari etc, and will also prob accessorise it all for you. Where abouts in the country are you?

ChopstheScarletduck · 10/05/2012 15:05

The relative is the other side of London - I've never met them before.

I'm in Berkshire. So I could easily get to Wembley, Slough, Southall etc. I think the problem is that dh family all tend to stock up on clothes when they go to India. So we don't know of anywhere that is good here. Any recommendations would be good?

I live in Wembley. You should head to Ealing Road where there are lots of beautiful shops. I keep wishing I will be invited to a Hindu wedding so I can wear something from one of them! Just beautiful. Have a look online for Venizons (or Venisons) - I'm out & about so can't google very well! Anyway, Ealing Road's the place!

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 15:14

this one is in wembley
this too

You might find someone on MN local who could give a personal recommendation for somewhere local.

x posts!

I would buy a copy of Asiana Magazine - lots of amazing boutiques advertised there in the London area, and loads of ideas for different looks. Sorry I am more Midlands based!

Asiana

I used to live there and Variety Silk House have lovely saris and outfits. venisons and Krishna saris great (opp venisons). have you thought about a lengha (long embroidered skirt, top and wrap)? they look lovely on taller ladies IMO. will see if I can find link later

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 15:28

I thought lengha were for brides, in the rule?

conorsrockers · 10/05/2012 15:31

I went to Green St (I think?) long time ago!! to have my wedding dress made (not Indian, just think their wedding dresses are prettier than 'ours') they made me a beautiful dress very quickly which was embroidered in India. And it was under £350. Impressive!!

ChopstheScarletduck · 10/05/2012 15:57

Venisons def rings a bell! I have seen all these shops when food shopping down Ealing road. They look a bit intimidating though, and usually empty!

I guess I'm jsut going to have to pluck up the courage to venture in one!

Lengha would be easier to wear, if I could get one made long enough, it might be an idea. I also like the churidar style, would that be suitable?

Thank you for all the links, I'm going to have a good browse now.

MrsLettuce. Some brides do wear lenghas, but will be an obvious bridal style (red and/or ivory, v. Heavy embellishment with dupatta covering head). No reason why OP couldn't wear one a simple style in a pastel/sorbet colour like this. they are a lot easier to wear than saris, and come with variety of tops.

OP - I would say if you are planning on buying a lengha or salwar type oufit I would go to Southall (mainly Punjabi community and they wear more of these types of outfits), but if you want a sari I would head to Ealing Road in Wembley (Gujarati community so specialise more in sarees).

ChopstheScarletduck · 10/05/2012 16:49

thanks Moomin, that's helpful!

since dh family is gujarati, does that mean it should really be a sari then? The lengha seem a lot cheaper too!

Oh, thanks moomin most glad to be corrected. Have always fancied one y' see...

MooMinCow · 10/05/2012 17:19

chops - I would just wear what you feel comfortable in tbh. I'm Gujarati, but find saris a real faff (especially with 2 DC's hanging off me!). you'll find the older ladies will wear heavy silk/embroidered saris and youngsters tend to wear light gauzy/chiffon style saris with racier tops Wink. normally the more closely related you are to the bride or groom the more ornate/blingier the outfit! think churidar outfit (tight skinny fit bottoms with salwar top will be lovely with your height also. also don't get anything black or White as they are inauspicious colours for a religious ceremony (but would be fine for a party etc)

mrslettuce - no problem, hope you find one you like Wink

helloitsme · 10/05/2012 18:25

If you go for a sari (and I love wearing saris) don't assume that just because they showed you in the shop how to tie it, you will be able to do it at home. Enlist a relative and be sure to have lots of safety pins at the ready.
Good luck and enjoy!

crazyspaniel · 10/05/2012 20:51

A churidar suit is probably a good bet if you are tall as the leggings have a lot of excess length since they are designed to bunch up around the ankle.

Catsmamma · 10/05/2012 20:54

I have got this sort of stuff online from Rupali but you might be best to go for a try on instead.

jessicapaul2701 · 15/12/2017 13:23

If you are looking for Indian clothing then you should visit www.nihalfashions.com/

Whiterabbitears · 18/12/2017 16:27

I'm 6 ft and can still wear a sari (Bengali DH) but you need someone to help you and lots of safety pins, I wouldn't recommend wearing to a wedding because it will need to be pinned properly. A lengha is a good idea as they look glam but are easy to wear. A lot of the shops are selling dress type designs, very elaborate and again much easier to wear.

Don't be daunted going in to the shops but be prepared to haggle with the price, a lot of shops expect this they wont think its cheeky. Remember to accessorise with lots of matching sparkly bangles which you can usually buy in the same shops.
