6 weeks fruitless search for a dress for wedding next week. Is this normal?

For nearly 2 months I have been looking for a dress to wear to a small registry wedding that takes place next week. I have scoured every website/shop under the sun, ordered and returned a dozen items and still have nothing to wear.

Hours wasted, sleep disrupted, children neglected.... does anyone else regularly find themselves in such situations or is it just me?

I'm 5'10'', biggish busted, reasonably nice looking if a little lumpy. I don't want anything over the knee or high necked/60's so that removes 90% of clothes. Are you also picky like this and wish you weren't?

I know what you mean about flowers. I like this very much, but suspect it would make me look as though I was channelling Ma Larkin (Darling Buds of May) in size 18

BangOffTrend · 11/05/2012 20:06

Yes, it is so pretty but on me that's wallpaper.

What do you think of these?

Have you tried Pepperberry ? The grey cap sleeve draped dress is lovely, and there's a nice navy dress with print skirt. ( Can't link from phone sorry ) .

Hi bangofftrend, I love the dress, it's gorgeous Smile I'm not convinced by the cardi, too much detailing to work with the pattern on the dress. I think a plain cardi would work better, would need to check the colour match if going for green but maybe one like this? or perfect shape but not sure wool would be right

MonaLotte · 12/05/2012 07:27

Sorry Paul Ross is Jonathan Ross's brother, the amazon link has joke comments was linking to fb before I saw this thread Blush

Hope you find a dress :)

hope you found something gorgeous Smile

No funds to go shopping, vicarious shopping via mn...

BangOffTrend · 13/05/2012 19:19

Tssk, those kids don't half take up your time...

I went to Jigsaw, Phase 8 where everything was a little slinky and multi colourful, Joules where the only thing worse than the fit of the dresses (shame, pretty fabrics) was the customer service and a helpful Hobbs where I got the outfit above, practically vomiting at the cost of it. I was tempted to pop into Country Casuals and Viyella as I am essentially a 40 year old gran when it comes to style but ran out of time.

It is a little green and I completely see what you mean about the cardie being a tad OTT but it is a perfect match and I'll never find another now. On the plus side it is a perfect fit, comfortable, machine washable, hugely rewearable, appropriate for the occasion, goes very well with the bride's outfit, as flattering as anything will ever be and I can get some sleep. It just irks me to spend that much on something I don't absolutely adore you know?

The thought of retrawling through all I've seen online with a higher budget now that Hobbs has well and truly broken the £100 barrier fills me w dread. Plus no time for deliveries now. I'm waiting for a dress from our much maligned Boden so will see about that.

Pepperberry is great although the photos make me thing a wasp waist is required. I'll revisit for winter.

SunToday, have you found anything?

Bet you'll look gorgeous! Hope it's a fab day x

Bang I've found the holy grail of dresses tall people!

Finally my search is over. Yes it's just over your £100 budget but it's worth it. I sized down, husband gave his thumbs up. Calm has been restored.

BangOffTrend · 14/05/2012 08:12

Wow, that's some dress Sun Today. Love the twisty detail at the shoulder. You'll be the belle of the ball, well other than the bride one hopes!
I'm hazarding a guess that your figure is somewhat better than mine.

Have fun and thanks all for your time and prodigious effort.

Have you tried Coast? We have an outlet store near us so we get a bit more for our money too! This shop is my 'never fail' shop for an event like a wedding.

BangOffTrend · 14/05/2012 17:07

Exactly my type of dress although I am trying to move away from dark colours. Too short though.

Maybe I should have gone for a maxi.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I went shopping with my most fashionable friend to help me look for a dress for a wedding at the end of the month.

Most of them made me look like a fat Roman soldier. Twas bizarre.

My build needs a high waist with a somewhat poofy skirt. I finally found one, sort of buff colored, with blue flowers. I would link it but am at work and this computer is insane.

BangOffTrend · 14/05/2012 17:27

Ha love the roman soldier analogy, that's exactly it. Esp with all those gladiator sandals still knocking about.

I also suit a bigger skirt but that can veer into cutesy retro and I was really hoping for a sophisticated urbanish thing.

Please link that dress when you have a mo and tell me what you'll wear it with?

CheerfulYank · 14/05/2012 20:12

Found it, it's this one, which I am wearing with a yellow cardi and wedge sandals. :)

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/05/2012 20:16

Bang - did you get 20% off with the InStyle offer?

I think the outfit is lovely Smile
