Why would she listen to us? Confused

I would try to take her to a beautician at local clinic.

My agenda would be that she learns to apply the makeup subtly (less is more) and she learns the value of good cleansing.
Find someone I knew she liked the look of to give her make up advice.
She will want to experiment anyway, but beautician can suggest important principles.

salemsparklys · 09/05/2012 10:24

Because she will listen to any adult other than me right now lol

As much mascara as can be and lots of black eyeliner. Orangey foundation applied badly with a good line around the jaw. Remember to put foundation over your lips too.

If you don't like her wearing make up, maybe try to encourage her to look nicer in other ways?

Like facials, or experimenting with toiletries.... hmmmmmm

Or limit it to tinted lipbalm...?

There are loads of make up tutorials on YouTube (you should vet them first obviously)

Has she got a "treat" coming up (birthday, exams, etc)? You could buy her a makeup lesson at MAC/Bobbi Brown/Illamasqua (would think MAC more up the street of most girls that age), I think MAC charge £25 for the lesson but you can choose £25 in products at the end.

I would have died of excitement at 13 to do that and have some posh makeup. She'll probably still insist on covering up her lovely teenage face but at least she should be doing it with a bit of flair!

Mabelface · 09/05/2012 12:12

I took mine to a Bobbi Brown session and she loved it. She now wears subtle make up rather than as much black as she can possibly paint on.

AlanMoore · 09/05/2012 12:41

My DD is only 2 but I'm already planning to try and get her into Bobbi Brown if she shows an interest in makeup, that'd be my "mum pick" for a 13yo but as an ex 13yo I would have preferred MAC or Illamasqua at that age! Mind you I was a bit "extreme" in my tastes...

salemsparklys · 09/05/2012 12:54

Thanks everyone, i shall attempt to get her interested in a make up lesson, shes into the "Goth" style at the moment as i was at her age, but it is causing huge bullying issues at school ( as it did for me too, some things never change! ), so i thought if i could get her to wear minimum make up to school she can them goth it out as much as she wants at weekends?

I agree with the PPs, take her to MAC or whatever the yoof-equivalent is, and get her a make up lesson.

The main problems I see on teenage girls is too much foundation - unless they have an acne problem their skin is the best it is ever going to be and doesn't need too much coverage.

Spider mascara and overdoing the eyeliner are other common teenage problems. However, if you're used to seeing your eyes with lots of black around them, they can look a little naked with a normal level of mascara. Probably best to discourage spider eyes before the habit forms.

dexter73 · 09/05/2012 13:59

Could a teenager really afford MAC or Bobbi Brown? I can't and I'm her mum! I wouldn't have listened to my mum about make-up when I was a teenager and I know my dd (15) wouldn't listen to me either. Most teenagers have spider eyes and awful orange foundation, it is a rite of passage, not subtle make-up.

itdidntworkout · 09/05/2012 14:36

How about tinted moisturiser, blush can double as eyeshadow, clear or brown mascara and a tinted lip balm. Do school actually allow makeup?

Loveleopardprint · 09/05/2012 14:36

Does she have cool older cousin/friend/babysitter that could take her under her wing?

Spider eyes are when they have on tonnes of mascara and their lashes are all claggy and spidery! My dd never asks me about make up which is good as I only wear a bit myself anyway.
