would this be just about OK for a wedding?

Going to a wedding (dp's ex, whom I really do not like) and don't want to spend much on a new outfit. Also feeling too fat for a dress. So would I look ridiculous/would it be obvious I'd made no effort if I wore: a floaty, fitted, silky, duksy pink tunic top (from Baby Ceylon if that means anything to anyone) with black wide leg trousers? I can't link to photos as it's stuff I've owned for years. Feel free to ask for more details/tell me I'd look ridiculous....

I'm in agreement with Mrs L and Mrs C .. again, TBH I would avoid separates, I know it's an easy out, but really dresses are FAR easier to wear than you think.

MrsCampbellBlack · 10/05/2012 06:16

New - that blue warehouse maxi dress is lovely and you'd wear it a lot afterwards too.

Go and try it on!

SilkStalkings · 10/05/2012 09:55

Yes the blue one! But buy some tummy-control pants just for your own confidence.

Kikithecat · 10/05/2012 10:04

Maybe I'm the only one but I think your outfit sounds fine. Why would anyone know you hadn't just bought it anyway? (Unless it's full of holes, faded, marks under the arms etc. in which case NO!)

hippoCritt · 10/05/2012 10:12

I really like the blue one, would you wear it again? If not send it to me please

Ephiny · 10/05/2012 11:17

I like the blue dress too, beautiful colour and looks like it would be flattering.

I've considered wearing trousers to weddings in the past (not keen on getting my legs out either) but it can be difficult to get right, you risk looking too casual, or too office-y etc, and I ended up wearing a dress just because it was easier to find something I was confident looked appropriate.

Actually I wore trousers/top once when invited to the evening reception only, would feel a bit odd at the daytime part though.

Don't think you can be too fat for a dress, you just have to find the right one (and trousers are often not that flattering either if you're a bit overweight).

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 11:20

Yeah, but it's a confidence thing isn't it? I've felt to fat for a dress at an 10 and fabulous in dress at a 16.

For goodness sake don't give the woman a complex about trousers although IMO / IME you are right.

Ephiny · 10/05/2012 11:37

Sorry, OP - of course it's fine to wear trousers if you feel more comfortable that way, you can wear whatever you like.

I would suggest at least trying on some dresses though - if you can find one that fits well and flatters your shape (easier said than done, I know!) you'll look and feel fab :) Size 14 doesn't sound that big given your height, you probably look better than you think!

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 11:42

Ooh, wasn't telling you off! I managed to inadvertently cause major offense down thread. More than once I fear.

notyummy · 10/05/2012 12:22

Another yes to the blue dress. You can carry it off at your height and some spanx for added confidence boost. Hope you get it!

Friendlymum67 · 10/05/2012 12:38

Blue dress is lovely!!

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 13:02

Good point Ephiny, a 14 at 5'8" is like a 10 at my height (5'nowt).

SilkStalkings · 10/05/2012 14:53

I'm 5'8" and a 12/14 and wear dresses for any occasion. I do find I can wear a 12 if tailored/well-constructed but for stretchy/drapey stuff it has to be a 14.
For a complete style departure, these look great on big girls. I have worn similar on the schoolrun with trainers a la Lily Allen!

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 16:32

This is such a bargain I had to link teal and black

still love the blue though

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/05/2012 16:40

this in the green colour is lovely on and soooo flattering

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2012 17:01

this is bargainous too: purple

MerylStrop · 10/05/2012 18:43

I can promise you that no-one will be looking at you and thinking look at the bride's ex's new partner's chunky calves

they might however, think oh dear, the bride's ex's partner is showing just how much she doesn't want to be here just by her outfit

the blue maxi is nice but the sainsbos green one could look stunning.
