What are the pros and cons of short hair?

I have always liked my hair long but since I became pregnant and had DD I have struggled with finding time to look after my hair properly and more importantly never really had enough time to wash and blow to look it's best before going out with friends or DH.
I work full time but that isn't a problem as in the mornings I shower quickly and I just clip it up in a monster clip or a scrunchy but I hate that look when we go out. For most of the past 3 years I have quickly plaited it and have it come forward off my shoulder like a bell pull. Not a great look for a 27 year old woman!!! I just don't feel that I looks stylish and for about 18 months I have started to think seriously about cutting it short. I have always really loved Frankie Sandford's hair and I have chatted to my hairdresser quite a few times about cutting it like hers. She feels it will really suit me and wants to cut it but I am just unsure whether to or not. I am not worried about having it cut short as it is constantly either clipped up or plaited so I am used to it off my face now but I get such conflicting opinions whether short hair is easier to manage or not!! I have thought about something shoulder length that would be easier to style regularly but I feel if I am going to have something new I would like it how I would love it styled and not in a compromise.
I think it is a great style and would suit me, but will it be easier to manage? What do you girls think I should do?
I have pics on my profile and here is a link to Frankie's look

I have short hair and I love it. Its easy to manage, just wash and go. Funnily enough, I had it cut short when I had my first child, and have kept it short since.

ellangirl · 06/05/2012 20:49

I cut mine short when I had my first child, but I wasn't brave enough to go properly short so it ended up an unflattering shoulder length mum bob because I still wanted it long enough to tie up. After growing it for a few years I have cut it again into a proper short bob, and this time i'm going to keep it. I have a long face so it suits me short, and because I can't tie it up, it means I have to make the effort to do it, so I always look more done. So, my advice would be if you're going to cut it, do it properly not a compromise...

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 06/05/2012 20:55

I am going through a 'growing it' phase. I know I look better with short hair, but I keep getting long hair envy so I now have a short bob while I try to eke it out to get it longer.

That is the 'con' of short hair.

whyme2 · 06/05/2012 21:02

I have had my hair short and long and tbh short hair needs work to look good everyday. The advantage of longer hair is you can just scoop it back.

It may just be my hair - but I had a similar cut to your link and it still needed doing everyday, wash, dry, styling etc or I looked like my mum.

tunaday · 06/05/2012 21:04

I find it really hard to manage my hair short. I wake up in the morning looking like I've been electrocuted and have to wet it and blow dry it. You can't just shove it into a fashionably messy up-do on a bad hair day. A bad hair day with short hair needs sorting out because there's nowhere to hide! I'm trying to grow a short bob out and now am resorting to clip in pieces so that I can put mine up without it looking daft until I have enough of my own. I love the style you've chosen tho and if you don't mind a bit of faffing about in the morning then I'd go for it.

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 06/05/2012 21:07

I have been thinking about this for ages! Love that frankiies hair link but I have thick and curly hair - my hair is right down my back and I don't know if I could do it - I'm like you OP, either pulled back or plaited and I'm bored! It also gives me headaches!

Are you brave enough to go tha short? I do like that style - is it called a pixie cut?

outyougo · 06/05/2012 21:16

Pros

It is more fashionable (atm)
It takes 2 mins to sort out in the morning
Saves a fortune on conditioner.
You don't have to find a brush because you don't need one.
You get chatted up by cute women more

Cons
There is a danger of spilling over from Frankie Stanford to Harassed Mum
You have to visit the hairdressers more often
You have to buy more product, possibly
Not so versatile
You get chatted up by cute women more

I had all mine cut off about 2 years ago. I'll never go back to long.

AmberLeaf · 06/05/2012 21:19

Short hairstyles can end up being harder work to keep in the style, you also dont have the quick tie it back option when you're in a rush either.

If you're going to do it make sure that its easy to style and doesnt need lots of heat styling/tongs/irons etc.

BeeInMyBonnet · 06/05/2012 21:27

I like short hair and have had mine short for some time. But I want something softer looking now (I'm older) and feel it's too severe for me these days. And of couse therein lies the 'con'; it's a nightmare to grow it out. I'm finding it very very hard going and am going through an awful stage with itSad.

If your hair is long and you want it short, do it in careful considered stages. I think it might be too much of a shock to whip it all off at once.

StyleGuile · 06/05/2012 23:02

I have had short hair for years and find it very easy. I wash it every day - too much of a hedgehog look not to - then leave to dry naturally and just blast from the back for 20 secs before leaving the house. If you are happy to wash every day then I would say go for it.

Silkflowersanne · 07/05/2012 09:28

I cut my hair short a couple of years ago now, i did the long fringe frankie type look and after a few days was so sick of it I had that cropped off too! It is so much easier to manage daily, I love how it feels, I wash it daily every shower and always feel fresh. personally I would never grow mine again but I do agree with posters that it would take years if you wanted to, especially to the lenth that yours is now. As long as you are cutting it because you want to I doubt that you will regret it.

CultureMix · 07/05/2012 10:21

I only cut mine short about four months ago so early days still, but so far I love it. Had a boring mum mid-length bob before that, and finally took the plunge. I have very fine, limp hair and never did anything with it, just let it hang. With the short hair I really feel - dare I say it - grown-up and polished. I've also had loads of compliments - more than just a polite 'oh you cut your hair, looks nice', so I do think it suits me. I even had one of my male colleagues say 'you look younger' Confused. My face is quite long so the cut helps balance it I think.

But.. yes does take more maintenance, absolutely needs a refresher cut every 6-8 weeks or looks sloppy. Some mornings I wake up and go 'eek I look like a boy'. But I find a wash, some mousse, and a quick drier blast gets it sorted, and on day two it's fine as soon as I get up, just needs a brush. So suits me well. That said I think ten years ago I wouldn't have had the confidence for it. And I remember once having a short cut when I was a teen, it was traumatic and I was desolate til it grew back.

GinPalace · 07/05/2012 10:28

I had short hair once - apart from the fact that my face didn't really suit it, which is not your problem, my thick mop needed sorting out every day and at intervals through the day to avoid looking like dougal from the magic roundabout had landed on my head.

Much more time and effort involved than long hair where at least you have a choice between shoving up in a up-do or coiffing for hours.

I personally found with short hair there was no choice it was style-me all the way.
However my hair type is very thick, I think if I had more wispy hair it could just be a quick tousle out of the shower and done?

tunaday · 07/05/2012 10:58

I have very fine hair and when it's short it's still hard work because it sticks up at the back when i wake up but the rest of it is flat and lifeless and needs all sorts of mousse/root boosting things to give it a bit of ooomph. The shorter it is the more time and effort it seems to involve. Long hair looks lank and lifeless so I am aiming for long enough to be able to put it up.

KatieScarlett2833 · 07/05/2012 11:01

I have very thick wavy hair. For me, short was a nightmare as it took extensive attention to keep my "do" looking good.

Nowadays I have the keratin brazillian thing done and it's just blast with hairdryer and go.

DanceToTheIslandBeat · 07/05/2012 11:03

l yoyo between short and long hair, always convinced the other holds the answer! I am going to go short again soon, but have decided to get it long enough to be able to do this first.

ivykaty44 · 07/05/2012 11:04

I had long hair (down below my bra strap) until I was 24/25 when I went for a bob, then it grew longer than my shoulders and at 30 I had it cut very much like the style in the photo.

I haven't looked back - it is quick and easy to do in the mornings - I tip my head upside down to dry a bit to add volume and then dry with a brush to style the last bits or just use finger. TBH I rarely use a comb or brush and stick to fingers and hairdryer. Takes 5 minutes max and I am done.

I do wash my hair every single day, shower and dry hair and dress to leave is 10 minutes though

Butwhatdoyoudoallday · 07/05/2012 11:08

I had my hair cut short as a teenager and have never looked back, and am now mid thirties.

I love it - I don't need to brush it ever, and once I worked out how to style it I can have it from wet to ready to go in just a few minutes. It does need washing to style it every morning, but it dries so fast because it's so short, so I can't really see this as a con.

One thing is I can go to bed with it being ok still and wake up the next day with it having grown out of shape. Monthly visits to the hairdresser are a must.
