What makes some people more 'striking' than others?

Been people watching today and trying to put my finger on what makes some women more noticeable than others. You know, the one that stands out in a crowd of friends. It's not always the one with the best figure, or the best clothes, etc.

So what is it?? I think colouring might play a part - being very blonde or dark amongst all the mousy brown, pasty English people? Is it grooming, confidence, natural style...?

Mainly confidence for me, and good posture Sometimes, animation (some people look very alive, while others just look kind of floppy....) Figure, no, interesting clothes, sometimes. Striking colouring, sometimes.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 04/05/2012 20:15

confidence and friendliness for the most part, i think. and beauty, obv, but only if accompanied by the former.

  • Posture and confidence, whether it's loud and bubbly confidence or quiet restrained confidence.
  • wearing clothes that flatter and suit your skin tone and personality
  • good bone structure (not an awful lot you can do about this, but it really does make a difference I think).

Oh, and wearing an 'outfit' rather than just clothes (i.e clothes that co-ordinate, accessories and shoe that tie the look together, hair and make up that match your look). Hairstyling and make up can be minimal or non-existent if that ties in with the rest of your 'look' I think.

BenderBendingRodriguez · 04/05/2012 21:03

I think knowing how to dress for yourself and having the confidence to do it. I see lots of good looking women buried under the wrong styles of hair/make up/clothes, so when someone comes along who has that elusive ability to understand exactly what looks good on them, it really stands out. Even when it's not a look I'd usually like, but they make it look good.

talkingnonsense · 04/05/2012 21:10

Good bones... You can't be striking with little blobby features, no matter how well dressed and well postured you are.

chalat · 04/05/2012 21:14

Very interesting..... colours and style which are 'right' make a huge difference. Well worth the investment for the House of Colour days my sisters and I did. I always wondered why wearing a particular tshirt made me look (and feel) awful - drained and yeuch even though I was actually ok. The style day was even more revealing Grin The consultant said 'think of Cher, then Kylie - how would they look in each other's clothes?' Yep - so right! Plus it's not about wearing lots of makeup but when I bother to do the 3 min routine it wakes up my face, LOL - and knowing I am presentable does heaps for the confidence. just need to lose weight and I will feel gorgeous Wink

eggyblackett · 04/05/2012 21:20

Strong features and confidence IMO.
I often think that the most striking women would not be considered classically beautiful.

kickingking · 04/05/2012 21:28

Good bone structure - yes.

I don't have a good bone structure or strong features Sad

AllPastYears · 04/05/2012 21:34

Yes, forgot about bone structure. Not much we can do about that one!

ChipOnMyShoulder · 04/05/2012 21:34

I have a constantly worried expression on my face, or weary, depending on the time of day. Sad

Oh dear. No hope for me, though I do have olive/mediterranean colouring

EllenParsons · 04/05/2012 21:55

I agree it is often a person's bone structure or colouring but confidence does play a part too.

chocolateteabag · 04/05/2012 22:40

I am looking at some of the style blogs for inspiration on what "it" is

Currently liking "does my bum look 40 in this" and Jessica Quirk "what I wore"

Both a different but "together" looks which I like.

I think you also need to have clothes that fit you properly and think outfit rather than separate pieces. Some people just have the "eye" to pick out what works well together and I hate them

Eliza22 · 06/05/2012 16:21

It's in the eyes I think. For me, at least. I really find myself interested in people who give engaging eye contact. I don't mean a manic stare but a warmth or twinkle about the eyes, is fascinating. Equally, I've known people who've looked smart and co-ordinated but there's nothing going on, behind the eyes.

People who are excited and animated too. That's very eye catching. But that could be that in a room full of people, I'd be the shy and retiring one!

Mrsrobertduvall · 06/05/2012 16:50

I am not pretty or beautiful, but have been called striking.
Probably because I am 6 feet tall and quite animated.

ToastedTeacakes · 06/05/2012 16:51

People who seem comfortable in their own skin: also posture, a sense of having put things together seemingly effortlessly, good hair, minimal makeup.

Some people manage to look radiant wearing a slouchy tee, old jeans and converse. Not sure how they do this, but it possibly relates to my opening sentence. I find it fascinating. Wish it could be sold in a bottle.

grammar · 06/05/2012 17:00

A whole face smile; an animated expression; being interested in the person you're speaking to.People will always warm to that. I aspire to this rather than achieve it.

sphynx · 06/05/2012 20:31

I agree with grammar, people that smile with their eyes. I also notice and am envious of shiny, healthy hair and a perfect smile.

max777 · 06/05/2012 20:35

I think a smile makes people stand out :)

Mombojombo · 06/05/2012 20:41

I get called striking quite a lot. I always thought it was a way for folks to say "Cor blimey you've got a big schnozz but you don't 'alf know how to wear lots and lots of garish makeup and dye your hair mad orange to detract from it". I think I stand out because I love colour and so few people do...

Emo76 · 06/05/2012 21:08

I think it's in the eyes.

debka · 06/05/2012 21:15

I get called striking too. I'm a Big Lass but I am a happy person and smile all the time. I think it's that.
