Summer shoes for the skinny-footed?

CuppaTeaJanice · 02/05/2012 08:29

I always have a bit of a nightmare finding summer shoes or sandals. My feet are size 6 but AA width fitting, which roughly equates to the width of a standard size 3. This isn't a problem with trainers, boots etc., as I can always tie the laces a bit tighter or use insoles, but I'd like some footwear that I can wear with a skirt on a hot day, and I'm struggling to find anything.

To make matters more complicated, I'm very fussy when it comes to footwear. I can't stand ballet pumps, for example, as I find them too dainty, giving the appearance of pigs trotters and an elephant's arse, even on size 8 people (which sadly I'm not at the moment). Also I can't walk in heels higher than about 1.5 inches. And I find toe posts uncomfortable. Sorry I'm not being very helpful, am I Blush. I do like chunky sandals, wedges etc., but usually they are so wide that my foot slips right through and my toes hang over the edge.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an awkward bugger like me? I've looked in a couple of narrow foot specialist catalogues and they are a. ridiculously expensive and b. full of granny sandals. I don't really want to spend more than about £30. Has anyone spotted anything that might be suitable on the High Street or in a supermarket?

Watching with interest as have similar prob cuppa. Very skinny, bony feet and ankles.

Nobody's come up with any suggestions - tunaday I guess we'll both be stomping about in boots all summer!

I've got skinny feet too. Hate it as I usually end up in either a too short pair bashing my toes or a too wide pair that feels horrible. Hmmm, this thread needs someone with an answer, not someone with the same problem though!

I am booking my place here - sadly, not really able to help, seem to spend summer in converse or birkenstocks done to the tightest setting and even then they are loose! I have the same problem as the OP with wedges :(

StyleGuile · 02/05/2012 19:31

I am pretty certain that you can get Birkenstocks in a narrower width fitting - via the B'stock site I think, rather than in stores.

I have AA size feet too. I've found some of the M and S autograph range seem to be a bit more narrow than usual so worth having a look.

CuppaTeaJanice · 02/05/2012 20:58

Thanks everyone. That sounds promising Fairyliz - I've got some Marks & Sparks vouchers left over from Christmas too!!

OP, are you me?

I wear narrow fitting birkenstocks. You can get them from the big store in central London, or a bit cheaper from Ebay.

CuppaTeaJanice · 03/05/2012 07:51

I'm going to have to wear Birkenstocks, aren't I?!! Please could someone link me to some nice ones? I've always been a bit nervous of them - they seem very middle class, and I've always associated them with those Scholl sandals that my elderly grandmother used to wear. Confused But if you lot say they are good..............

Ooh no Scholl sandals are fab! Ive got narrow feet too, (and quite flat too to add to the mix) so need comfy and adjustable width wise. Some of Scholls are a bit grannyish but they have a few new styles that are lovely. I bought some Bimini style ones from tkmaxx in bright blue, and find they are much better than birkenstocks as they have a buckle to adjust the width and much comfier. Have a look on on Amazon for a wide range of Scholls or tkmaxx, i promise they arent all old lady styles.
Crocs good for round the house and casual, but i know even though i love them lots of people dont!!!Grin

Me too!
I am just a B fitting. it's a nightmare.

I can only suggest that you try on everything- as if you haven't.

I have some Clarks sandals that are narrow-ish but think that's just a one-off.

If you can get a style that has a T bar or ankle strap you can get away with a bit of looseness around the foot, IME.

I have found that Jones the Bootmaker and Dune tend to be slightly l ess wide than other high street brands.

Also DUO do narrow fitting shoes but they are IMO not that narrow!

I did have some narrow fiting Birkenstocks and had to fasten them on the tightest hole and they never felt comfy TBH.

tunaday · 03/05/2012 15:26

There doesn't sound to be masses of choice does there?! Relieved it's still cold and wet as am still in biker-style boots every day. I didn't realise Dune's shoes come up a bit narrower than other places. That might explain why the only boots I've ever found that are comfy are from there. I tried on some sandly Fit-Flops in sort of a patent black leather effect yhthe other day (can't wear flip flops as they all rub) and they seem hopeful. I like Birkenstocks but I just walk straight out of them. I fear the narrow fitting ones might not be narrow enough after what you say ameliagrey. Will check out Scholl.

Not easy is it!

I tried some tan wedges on in White Stuff today and they were wearable- called Bristol. £55 but if you quote HARES you get 15%. still deciding whether to buy or not.
