Fat and 50s Style

Can you do 50s style clothing while bigger?

I am on a diet but struggle to lose weight and stay motivated.

I wondered if the 50s style waist emphasis and full skirts would make me look bigger?

Am I better waiting until I get into the "normal" weight category?

oh crikey of course you can - have you looked at any of the Fatshionista blogs and Flickr pages- ? will see if I can link for you- A friend of mine often blogs about clothes for larger women (ie not horrible tenty things) Be stylish !

Mombojombo · 29/04/2012 09:43

Fat & 50s is FABULOUS! Take a look at some of the gallery pics from the wondrous Vivien of Holloway - there are plenty of curvaceous bods there.

StellaAndFries · 29/04/2012 09:46

I'm fat (size 20) and I only dress in 50's pin up and rockabilly fashion, I wear control underwear when wearing wiggle skirts and dresses with circle skirts are most definitely my friend, they em

AndiMac · 29/04/2012 09:47

Yes, my best friend got married in a Vivien of Holloway dress and she was very much a plus size at the time and still looked gorgeous.

StellaAndFries · 29/04/2012 09:48

Pressed send too soon!

They emphasise my bust and hide my hips and nip in my waist. I follow a very good blog here.

rockinhippy · 03/05/2012 23:58

50s is far better on bigger girls, you NEED curves to rock that sort of styling properly, so go for it & Viv (Andimacs link) does some fabulous shapes that flatter curves beautifully, built in support too :)

rockinhippy · 04/05/2012 00:02

oops - no link above

Vivienne of Holloway HERE

make sure you read the sizing info though, she uses the old sizing, so you will be a bigger size, but don't let that put you off, the fit etc will be worth itWink

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 04/05/2012 00:11

ooh gosh, some scary sights on the fatshionista flickr thing!

OP Rockabilly and 50s most def look better on real lady shapes :)

AgeingFop · 04/05/2012 09:49

If you want to give it more of a rock-chick look, you could try some Hell Bunny dresses - here's a a shop selling some. May be a bit shorter than real 50s dresses - but also cheaper!

Havingkittens · 04/05/2012 13:37

A friend of mine sells lots of gorgeous 40s and 50s style clothing in plus sizes in her online shop pinup-parade.com/shop/index.htm

MrsHavisham · 04/05/2012 15:58

The more curvacious you are, the better you look in 50's stuff! Another recommendation for viviennes, my mum lives just down the road from them. The shop assistants are incredibly helpful and friendly, and will measure you, as the sizes are different there.

MrsHavisham · 04/05/2012 16:00

Ps if you buy viviennes stuff then lose weight, you will have no problem selling it on ebay.

rockinhippy · 04/05/2012 17:48

& I can vouch for Viv having the most experience in this sort of look, she's been doing it for 30 odd years & now has a good dedicated & very knowledgeable team of staff

StellaAndFries · 04/05/2012 19:52

I have lots of hell bunny dresses as most of them have an elasticated back panel making them very comfortable for us more curvy ladies :) I got one on eBay this week for £35 with free postage from an eBay shop so nice and reasonable and they are nice quality :)

GlaikitFizzog · 04/05/2012 20:04

OP sorry to hijack your thread but the ladies here look like you might be able to help me!

I have this dress in red I'm an 18 and short. I love the dress but I think I need a petticoat under the skirt to balance it out. Where can I get one that's not going to bankrupt me?

Wedding is 2 weeks tomorrow!

ditavonteesed · 04/05/2012 20:06

vivien of holloway is great on larger and curvier figures, I am personally a bit of a chunk and I always feel fab in 50's style.

StellaAndFries · 04/05/2012 21:04

GlaikitFizzog where in the world are you? If you are local to Norfolk I have one I'd lend you. I bought mine from hourglass dresses on eBay which came from china in less than a week, I'll have a look and see where my others are from as I know they came from the uk :)

GlaikitFizzog · 04/05/2012 21:18

I'm in Scotland Stella, but thanks for the offer! I didn't think of looking on ebay! The ones I found using google were more expensive than what I paid for the dress!!

redhappy · 05/05/2012 08:09

I've seen Lady K Loves go for good prices on ebay too (thinking of another poster's suggestion of what to do if you lose weight after you've bought lots of new things).

GlaikitFizzog · 05/05/2012 10:34

Got a petticoat from ebay for £16 much better than the £50+ ones I had been looking at. Thanks very much!

Jenda · 06/05/2012 12:57

Im thinking about wearing a 50s dress for a wedding soon, but im an 18/20 apple. Do I need to have a smaller waist and bigger hips to pull the look off?

GlaikitFizzog · 06/05/2012 13:36

Jenda I'm an Apple, hence why I wanted the petticoat to balance me out a bit. I also got a wide belt to wear with the dress I linked to above to give the illusion of a smaller waist.

teamed with killer heels that I can't walk in and big pants I think I look not too bad at all!

Havingkittens · 06/05/2012 23:17

You can get help with some good foundation garments. Try looking on www.whatkatiedid.com for the best sassy undies for wearing with 40s & 50s styles. Unfortunately, I found that Vivien of Holloway doesn't fit me very well being a bit apple shaped. The sizing is cut for quite a generous waist to hip ratio. I would need to get a bigger size in pencil skirt to get the waist to fit and then have the whole rest of the skirt taken in. Very frustrating! The companies that do bengaline dresses are better as the dresses stretch to fit different shapes more easily. Bettie Page clothing and Stop Staring! Are both good.
