Anyone with Afro Hair? What products do you use?

To cut a long story short, I've lived in a very rural part of the country all of my life where there are no hairdressers that know how to handle afro hair and nowhere sells products this type of hair either. All my family are white so I've never been able to ask for advice. My hair is really getting me down and when I look at afro hair products on the internet I find it quite mind boggling tbh.

Help!

Not sure if this is of any help but Sallys Salon Services has a segment that may or may not be of use.

How do you wear your hair? Is it natural or straighten (heat or perm)?

The place to go for products information and reviews is blackhairmedia it has numerous forums the most popular on weaves & lace front wigs -- but there are smaller sections on products & natural hair.

People will post pictures and talk about their regimens (products they use).

I haven't looked for awhile but it can be time consuming as one link leads you to another. (I haven't even mentioned fotki and the numerous blogs).

My friends are mixed race and they use something called 'Mixed chicks'. It's expensive but really good. They have long, curly hair. It's a leave-in conditioner. You could see if they sell over t'internet.

Depends on whether your hair is treated (relaxed/permed) and how wear it as to what products are best.

Personally I love keracare and Nexxus products.

mixed chicks

It smells nice too!

Thanks for your replies. My hair is not treated, I do sometimes straighten it with GHD's but am yet to find a product that will stop it going frizzy when I do so. I find I need a product that will weigh it down iykwim?
I use Morroccan Oil products atm.

I will check out the products you've recommended thank you, tbh I don't know what a weave is Blush and I'm certain there are no hairdressers within 100miles of here who would know what to do either!!!

Mixed Chicks is a nice range, but useless for proper afro hair or very thick, mixed race hair, imho.

My DD is mixed with very coarse, thick, curly hair. We buy most of her hair care products from http://www.afrotherapy.com/. Not cheap, but good quality and one of the best afro hair websites in the UK, imo.

I use a very mild shampoo on her hair once a week max, always condition it (we use Curly Q coconut conditioner), then rinse thoroughly. Once towel-dried I rub a little bit of Curly Q milkshake through the hair, comb through and then massage in Curl Harmony Shea Butter, concentarting on the bottom half of her (long hair) - really moisturises her dry hair and holds her curls in ringlets.

I think you can get some trial sized products from Afrotherapy, too, so you can experiment with what works bets for your hair type.

Where do you live? Might be worth a trip to London once or twice a year to stock up on hair products and visit a proper afro stylist.

PJHarpy · 27/04/2012 15:21

Weave is fake hair sewn or glued in to your hair.

Relaxing is perming your hair straight.

I am assuming you wear your hair naturally? In which case, you just need really good, moisturisng products that will keep your hair soft and give your curls some definition.

Thanks PJ. Your DD's hair sounds exactly like mine. I live in Devon so I'm miles away from anywhere!!

For all things to do with curly hair of all types Caucasian/Mixed/Afro you should check out www.brithishcurlies.co.uk. They have articles, videos, product advice and you can purchase hair products there too. This would be a great place for you to start.

ronx · 03/05/2012 21:55

You can find hair products in Bristol - no need to hack it over to London! You can't go wrong with either Mizani or KeraCare products - which can be ordered on www.lookfantastic.com.

fusam · 03/05/2012 23:26

I second British Curlies, you really don't need a special product just need to find something really moisturising like Hello Hydration conditioner and maybe coconut oil on top.

Is there a style you like the look off? Look at curlynikki.com if you want tips on styling. I think to wear my hair in twist outs or braid outs as I like the curly look, youtube has really good instructional videos on step by step styling
