Trying to grow hair longer but just looks Crap/dry at ends......

My hair is just below shoulder length. I use to have longer, thinker hair in good condition but over colouring it and medication i have to take resulted in very dry and thin hair. I had to have quite a few inches cut off last year as my hair looked awful at the ends and lengths. I vowed this year i wouldn't colour it as much and not have so many trims (i'm aiming every 3-4 months) or as much cut off and try and grow my hair long again. It seems as though it reaches a certain length and that's it, it looks awful and all the conditioners, miracle oils etc don't do anything, the only thing for it is the chop.

The last time i had a trim about 4 weeks ago, the hairdresser wasn't as experienced as my usual hairdresser & although i didn't want any taken off my layers, she did anyway, it was a dry trim & i think she made a balls up of it, is there a thing as a bad trim that can ruin your hair?

I do blow dry my hair and occasionally straighten it. I have tried that Lee Stafford hair growth treatment before and its okay but found it can be a bit drying after a while? Any advice?

Trimming won't necessarily stop your hair from growing as quickly. If your hair is very dry at the ends, the split ends will continuously break further and further up towards the root of your hair which will make it look thinner and mangier. Trimming regularly will keep that in check. Sounds like you do need to shop around for a good hairdresser though. It's worth building a bit of a relationship with one decent one, they'll then know what you want to achieve and try to get you the best results possible over the next few months.

You may also want to look at a supplement as well. My own hairdresser raves about these; I tried another product from H&B and I have noticed some difference in the speed my hair's growing and it's definitely improved in condition.

Try eating handful of almonds a day and keeping hydrated. I also suffer from thin dry hair due to mess and chronic condition. I find that Kerastase products are brilliant especially Elixir Ultime and Masque Intense. On the cheaper end of the scale, L'oreal Full Restore Five is excellent shampoo & conditioner. And if you are blonde, John Frieda's Go Blonder is gentle and makes my hair beautifully soft and full.
