Clarks shoes aggressive sales techniques

Anyone else having problems with Clarks aggressive sales techniques? Went to buy pair of school shoes but they also brought out another box of something expensive and tempting and opened it, my child saw them and later tried to pester me. I complained, but apparently it's how all these sales people are trained. Am I being unreasonable to hope that a responsible company wouldn't behave like this when selling products for young children?

i was trained at clarks and we did/they do have to bring out at least 3 pairs of shoes

it's to give people choice, but also in case the chosen pair doesn't fit you already have back-up choices there.

sometimes there aren't many in the right size, so you just have to take what is in the stock-room

i don't think it's aggressive to SHOW you some expensive shoes. If they'd tried to compel you to buy them that would be aggressive, bringing them out? no

I go to a small independent shoe shop because they are not averse to sending me away if there is still plenty growth left in DD's shoes. What I also like is that, if they do bring out a pair of hideous sparkly sequinned shoes, they show them to me discretely so that I can veto them before DDs get sight of them. Might be worth trying a different independent retailer.

but I went for school shoes, old ones worn out, feet hadn't grown, and they brought out trainers.

some of their school shoes do look quite trainer-y it has to be said.

next time be clear about what you want and they shouldn't bring out anything you don't like

The last time I went to Clarkes the saleswoman told me my daughter just 'obviously didn't like the shoes and was pretending they hurt!!!'

I work at an independent shoe shop (also sell online) and use pressure selling methods. If you ask for school shoes we would show you school shoes... we feel that the most important thing it that the shoes fit your childs feet correctly. It is difficult as often customers come to us as a last resort after trying the big retailers.

You do or don't use pressure selling methods?

shoesgbalison · 27/04/2012 11:45

Sorry - that should have read that we don't use any pressure selling!!!
