Blazer for big breasts?

lemniscate · 25/04/2012 10:27

So I really really want a blazer, have wanted one for about 3 years. But I have 34H breasts and I just find that they sit really badly on me - they either don't fasten properly and gape, or when I have them open they sort of hang off my boobs so from the side I look absolutely enormous as you can't see my waist.

I need a blazer that has a nipped in waist rather than one of the looser styles I think. But I've never found one that suits so I've stopped trying. I'm a size 14 on top usually, with an hourglass figure so size 16 (although almost 14) in trousers.

Anyone with big breasts got any suggestions of where to look? Or should I just avoid the blazer idea completely?

Don't worry about getting sidetracked from blazers - this is all very useful!

I too struggle with tops. As I said, I only have 7 that suit so just about get through a week! Three from Hobbs, two from Monsoon, one from New Look and one from Tesco! I cannot wear anything floaty as I look enormous, so it's all fairly form-fitting cotton lycra here. Tesco is worth a look for a few cheap and cheerful options - most of it hideous but there are one or two gems and they seem to be cut for slightly bigger boobs. As I mentioned earlier I have 2 lovely summer dresses from Tesco.

I agree with Shotgun that puff sleeves are you friend. I don't like too many gathers or floatiness over the boobs (although gentle cowl neck is ok). I find it needs to be quite sleek and fitted, but puff sleeves are a way to add a bit of shape and flounce! Having said that, I only have one puff sleeve top (the Tesco one) because most of the ones I see have high necks in a prim, Victorian kind of style which look appalling on me. The Tesco one is puff sleeves with a big scoop neck - perfect!

Yes puffed sleeves and scooped neck = tick. The sleeves add balance y making the shoulders look a bit wider, and also distract a bit from the promontories in the way a smooth expanse of jersey can sometimes feel too revealing.
I also like a blouse with said sleeves (short) with a feminine, fitted shape and rounded collar. The top buttons have to be open with a cami under obv!

scotsgirl23 · 28/04/2012 08:31

I think tops depend hugely on the state of your stomach to be honest. When I was a bit slimmer then fitted tops looked awesome but at the moment, not so pretty. But it's quite hard to find tops that are not too clingy but also don't add loads of bulk. But when I am wearing tops it tends to be with skirts so more often than not i wear something a little drapey at the front to cover tummy, but tucked in to a skirt (carefully) so you can still see my outline.

(this is why I have a personal training session this morning!)

scotsgirl23 · 28/04/2012 08:32

Oh and yes yes yes to the puffed sleeves. Even (shock) shoulder pads in the right top can accentuate the waist.

lemniscate · 28/04/2012 08:40

I bought a beautiful jumper in the sale at French Connection - puffed sleeves with shoulder pads too :) It's a little bit high necked for me really though so I do wear it but with a big pendant necklace to break up my boob shelf a bit, but I have an 18 month old who loves fiddling with jewellery so can only wear it when she's in bed!

In fact, I don't know why I'm bothering too much about clothes at the moment - she is at the age where she just smears my clothes in snot within 3 minutes of me getting dressed in the morning Hmm

scotsgirl23 · 28/04/2012 08:45

*but might try, ffs, wonky typing!

BelleCurve · 28/04/2012 14:06

Really? puffed sleeves? I always thought they were the work of the devil, but may have to re-consider!

Any more links to good tops?

BelleCurve · 28/04/2012 14:08

I have this www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/fashionCarla-Cowl-Neck-Top/300859050 in other colours, but you do have to be careful as it is quite clingy around the middle.

scotsgirl23 · 28/04/2012 14:50

I love that, the green is really pretty too.

I quite like this

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/04/2012 15:52

This has potential although might be too loose for some.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/04/2012 15:55

And I bought this in pink the other week buy haven't worn it yet due to this feckin weather.

Another member for the size 14/not very tall/big boobs club signing in here :)

I recently got a jersey blazer from Gap that I'm really pleased with. I've never found one that suited me before but I think it's the jersey that's the key - it fits like a cardigan or t-shirt but with the shape and smarter-ness of a jacket. I'm planning to wear it with pushed up sleeves over a Breton top of similar a la stylish ladies on fashion blogs and as it is long enough to cover my bum, with dark skinny jeans or chinos and ballet pumps or Converse.

lemniscate · 28/04/2012 21:17

Wannabe - funny you should mention a jersey blazer, because I tried this in New Look today and think I'll go back and get it. Felt more like a cardigan on, but with the smartness of a blazer. Didn't see it in the coral colour, but I prefer the navy because of the piping.

I'm a G cup and a i love a blazer, most of mine are from Boden and got a lovely one in H&M recently - they have lots in at the moment.

Bashfulblue · 28/04/2012 21:57

Ooh sorry to crash your thread, but I've been looking for a conversation like this for years. V similar size to the rest of you - 14 on top, edging back towards 14 on the bottom, hourglass waist and horrible thighs. And 5'7". I had a fantastic shopping spree this week at H&M, where they have all sorts of flattering tops and dresses at really good prices. Haven't bought a thing this year so I feel loads better for it. I looked at every blazer/jacket in the shop and came to the same conclusion - shortish with a nipped in waist has got to be the way forward. But I couldn't find one.

Can I join in?

Gingefringe · 28/04/2012 23:05

I'm size 14, 34FF and found the Zara jersey blazer in navy (size L) surprisingly flattering and very slimming. Don't normally buy Zara as their stuff is so small but I was very pleased with this one.

scotsgirl23 · 28/04/2012 23:23

Might have to check out Zara, it's only round the corner from me. I gave up on it a long time ago as I found everything too straight up and down for me previously!

Dollydowser · 28/04/2012 23:30

I bought and returned the Zara blazer as it couldn't cope with my 32Js, the collar kept unfurling.

Bashfulblue · 28/04/2012 23:52

I do think jersey is the answer to almost everything - much more flattering on the bosom and clings where it should. No one ever seems to realise how hard it is to dress this kind of figure without looking like a giant barrel.

lemniscate · 29/04/2012 06:45

That was what was nice about the fabric of the New Look blazer - it was thick enough that it didn't show any bulges but form fitting enough not to gape. I didn't buy it straight away because I was a bit concerned that at £25 it might not last very long, but then at £25 I probably shouldn't care if it doesn't go beyond this summer, should I? :)

Up ludicrously early for some reason today, despite the rest of my family being sound asleep.

I bought this last night, I hope it's good (but free delivery and returns at the moment so worth a punt)

I'm also going to investigate Duo Boots properly :)

Can I be in your gang too? It shouldn't be this hard should it? It's quite a nice figure to have really.
I started trying on shift dresses with sleeves which I would normally avoid, and adding a thin belt, and they work out nicely for work. Will find a link.

Born2BRiiiled · 29/04/2012 07:46

a bit like this

Born2BRiiiled · 29/04/2012 07:51

I have shoes like this. They look much nicer on, are very comfortable for all day, and add a bit of height.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 29/04/2012 09:22

Born2B it is a nice figure to have! It's considered an indication of genetic health and fertility, and it's the shape most people are aiming to emulate when they dress themselves. It's also quite rare (8% in America - don't know what the stats are in the UK), which I suppose is why it can be hard to find the right clothes. The shops are busy stocking up for the ubiquitous apples and pears!
I think a major part of the battle is knowing the shapes that suit (which everyone here seems to), and then it's a matter of trai ing your eye to spot things quickly when you're shopping.
This book is pretty good, despite the naff title. It gives a good breakdown of the different shapes and shows clear examples.
Re. shoes; I must admit, I do tend to cop out and go for flats, although some form of heel is much more flattering. I think I've pretty much spent my life wearing them in the day, so feel large and awkward, or 'dressed up' in them now. Must make finding decent ones for day a resolution, though - I do sometimes find myself feeling rather dumpy!
