New shoes: will they stretch?

I have just bought a pair of Mary Janes online and they are tight across the widest part of my foot.
In fact, they are too shallow iyswim; I have arthritis in my feet.
DP thinks I should try to have them stretched at the cobblers as I really love them and they were a great price.
Had anyone done this successfully?

Are they leather? If so, then they will stretch over time, you may want to wear them around the house and check that they do, and if not you could always return them?

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 25/04/2012 09:02

I've wondered this, especially if there is a line of stitching involved IYSWIM.

I have heard they can only stretch stuff to a limited degree.

Bunbaker · 25/04/2012 09:02

Not a criticism, but if you have problem feet why do you buy shoes online? My feet don't look awkward, but I find buying shoes a bit of a nightmare and literally have to try on hundreds of pairs before I find any that are comfortable.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question though.

If they are leather you can buy a spray from (e.g.) Clarks to spray on the tight area before wearing to soften and stretch them.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 25/04/2012 09:17

I've heard a tip of getting a couple of big potatoes and putting them in (obviously when you're not wearing them Grin)

Haven't tried it myself so don't know if it works or not.

Yes to the spray on leather shoes.

Thanks all.
Bunbaker I have bought this make before and they have been fine so I (lazily) assumed this style would be too.

SkinnyVanillaLatte i am loving the Spuds in shoes!!

I think I'll try the spray, They were such a bargain that it will be worth a try.

(Thinks to self maybe this is why they were such a bargain Smile)

agree with skinny the spud is great for this. if you get some vaseline and rub it along the inside of where you want stretched, cut a spud and wedge it in as far as you can, use a pen or stick to stretch between the heel and spud and leave near an open fire or other heat source for a few days if you can.

works a treat for me
