Oh that's beautiful Starshaker! That is the style I was trying to say to buy!

MamaG · 12/02/2006 08:57

Oh, one more piece of advice: that dress on ebay says China, so you probably won't be going for fittings(!) - I would advise you to order it in a size bigger than you are, and get a dressmaker to alter it over here.

I know it sounds silly, but thats what my bridal shop told me to do and it ended up fitting me perfectly.

starshaker · 12/02/2006 09:00

i take my measurements and send them off but im gonna add a inch or so and my mates mum will alter it if needed

I like the shape and bodice detail on the second one, but the flowers/rosettes on the skirt are a bit OTT for my tastes.

I really like the detail on the 5th one (the strapless one), the bodice is beautifully beaded and the skirt is plain and quite sleek.

If you could find the shape of no2 with the detailing of no5, then imo, that'd be the best combo. But as somebody else said, it's difficult to give you a true opinion as we don't know your shape so advising on styles is almost impossible.

What looks great on the rack/hanger/dummy/model can often look poo on, as I discovered when I got married. I would never have gone for the style as it looked a bit frou-frou on the hanger but when I tried it on, it was transformed.

Top right - BUT only without all the faff round the bottom, like the top of it but not the bottom

Bottom left (though I'm not keen on strapless wedding dresses)

GDG · 16/02/2006 18:56

Ditto NDP! We have impeccable taste

brimfull · 16/02/2006 18:58

like all of them although not too sure about the one with the shawl

MrsBadger · 17/02/2006 09:01

Starshaker, what was the dress you liked so much like?
Style name / designer?
Vague shape / style?
Any chance of a pic?
Let the search skills of Mumsnet come up with a dress just as good for a fraction of the price!

One of the first dresses I tried on that I liked was a very simple style but cost over a thousand pounds - I nearly fell over when they told me!
I kept looking and found a similar one for less than £200 (in Debenhams Bridal as it happens).
Didn't buy it in the end as I found an even better one on a sale rack in my size, but just goes to show that shopping around is worth it.

There are also a couple of companies (eg Netbride) who import designer dresses cheap from the US, so if you're dead set on a particular dress from one of the big houses, there are ways of getting it cheaper.

Second hand is worth looking at too - Oxfam have several bridal shops, and 1st call for weddings sells once-worn dresses online.

The other cheap way to get a made-to-measure dress is to find a pattern you like (try Mccall , and get a dressmaker to make it up for you - you can get some bargains on fabric too.

Don't feel too down - it is possible to have a gorgeous dress without spending a fortune!
