Is anyone else put off of clothes from certain brands because of the 'wrong' perceptions?

I don't know how to explain this very well, but it's occurred to me recently that I seem to look only within my favourite brands (or brands which have worked for me in the past) rather than being more open minded and just generally 'looking'...

Is this just me or does anyone else have this 'problem'?

An example is CC - because my mother would shop there.

I know what you mean.At opposite end of scale,

As a 40 + grandma am starting to feel an affinity with brands that I always associated with Tory ladies from the shires Grin
eg bought a Planet cardigan in the sale after Christmas, have more Phase Eight than Topshop,am constantly browsing Boden catalogue even though I don't like garish prints, etc etc

Some 'classic' brands have been re energised recently,so maybe worth a look,as is the younger end Zara,Topshop etc

supernannyisace · 23/04/2012 18:27

No. I don't care where my clothes come from if they look nice, fit well and are worth the money.

I like to think I am that inbetween age - whereby I can youngify old lady stuff and still manage to get away with the tamer young crowd clothes..

I may be delusional though. Grin

WantAnOrange · 23/04/2012 18:34

Well yeah, I'm not wearing anything with 'GoldDigga' written across the arse even if it does look comfy!

MinnieBar · 23/04/2012 18:41

Yes - if in a department store I wouldn't look in Jane Norman (do they still even exist?!) as to me they are cheapy nylony clothes for young skinny types to wear on a night out. Similar for Warehouse even though I know it shouldn't be...

Country Casuals and Betty Jackson - my nan used to like them, so out.

LesAnimaux · 23/04/2012 18:43

Shock I would never shop at CC - just because my mother does.

I would never wear anything with PB written on it. I saw a middle aged woman with Pauls Boutique on her jacket today, and inwardly sniggered.

GeorginaWorsley · 23/04/2012 19:23

Am trying to buy less but better as I get older, ifyswim.

miaowmix · 23/04/2012 19:28

Yes, Jane Norman and her tacky big sister Karen Millen. I am sure they might even have some nice clothes occasionally, but I can't bring myself to ever shop there.
At the other end of the scale I have problems with FatFace and White Stuff because of that annoying camping/surfy vibe the shops give out. I don't want to pretend I'm going to a festival or a farmyard when I walk into a shop!

AWomanCalledHorse · 23/04/2012 19:32

I really like the Fenn-Wight Mason & Phase Eight stuff. but feel like they'd really clash with my mainly Uniqlo, Punky Fish & urban outfitters wardrobe.

I did notice earlier today how fine Jane Seymour is looking in the CC advertising, almost tempting me in.

stressheaderic · 23/04/2012 19:35

I always feel a bit sheep-like and crowd-pleasing when I buy from Next, but they do sometimes have what I'm looking for.
Hate Matalan and its generously cut garish shapes. They remind me of fat mums with no style even though I am one.

supernannyisace · 23/04/2012 19:41

Ah yeah - I wouldn't choose anything with big logos on. The PB and Bench stuff.

HandMadeTail · 23/04/2012 19:44

I could never buy something from Dorothy Perkins. It just sounds like a shop for grannies!

NowWeKnow · 23/04/2012 19:44

I've never been remotely influenced by a label and I don't notice 'brands' on others either. If I like it I like it, whether it's in a charity shop or an expensive shop.

Agree about FatFace and White Stuff though. FatFace clothes all look like screwed up rags scraped off the groundsheet of a tent.

MrsSeanBean · 23/04/2012 19:50

I'm with you all on the logos.

It's the 'normal' non logo emblazoned things i mean, but even so I would know they came from CC or wherever, and it just makes me feel uncomfortable for some reason.

Warehouse has some nice classy stuff (some, not all!), it's not like Jane Norman.

BusinessTrills · 23/04/2012 19:53

YABU (and yes I know this is S&B) to be put off a non-identifiable piece of clothing when only you would know where it came from.

stressheaderic · 23/04/2012 19:57

I ♥ Dorothy Perkins! Dotty P's all the way. Can always get something I like in there.

MrsSeanBean · 23/04/2012 19:57

I KNOW Business Trills - I just wish I knew why!

BusinessTrills · 23/04/2012 20:02

If something is going to make you unhappy and feel look at me I am dressing like a granny because I bought this from an old lady shop every time you put it on, then it's probably best not to buy it.

NowWeKnow · 23/04/2012 20:03

Dorothy Perkins really is an awful name for a shop though. I think they should change it. Who is she anywayConfused. Probably some relative of Aunt Bessie and Mr Kipling.

I can't remember your dress ruby but I can remember your hair, it was very swishy.

MrsSeanBean · 23/04/2012 20:09

Aha, the Ruby's dress must have been a good choice! What was it Coco Chanel said: 'If you are impeccably dressed you don't remember the dress, you remember the woman' or similar?

GeorginaWorsley · 23/04/2012 20:10

Isn't Dorothy Perkins a rose?
Or have I dreamt that?

roundtable · 23/04/2012 20:14

I won't wear anything that self advertises itself unless I'm slobbing out in my dh clothes.

'Tis vair vulgar, don't you know? Wink

AgeingFop · 24/04/2012 09:55

Geneally despise anything with the brand emblazoned garishly across it: Super Dry, G-Star, etc, are real offenders here. Anything larger than the leather patch on the back of jeans in unacceptable IMHO.

I had a friend who once carefully sewed a Calvin Klein label into a jacket from C&A!
