Interview - please help a slightly fat, time poor, cash strapped mum

So I have been on maternity then self empl for a while and my good suit doesnt fit properly. I will probably have an interview next week and am looking after child/travelling this week. City I am in is not good for shopping imo so options and time are limited
.

I think the interview calls for something interesting - so I was thinking maybe a tailored dress? Its not in the creative industries but it is a job that calls for a bit of flair and at least 6 years experience + post grad qual (so relatively senior). Third sector tho so not a v formal sector dress wise.

BUT we are broke and I am losing weight so I feel I cant spend as much as I would normally

So...I was thinking maybe Next??

Specifically:
www.next.co.uk/x4956s2 Dress 1
or

www.next.co.uk/x4960s2 Dress 2
or
www.next.co.uk/x492038s3#839848x49 Dress 3

This is a lot cheaper than what I would normally wear to an interview but I tried on the blue one - before child freaked in changing rooms - the 14 is a leetle snug but the material is ok - falls nicely etc.

I have a decent coat and would wear nice new heels good bag (Need to get these too so will be pricey anyway). Next could deliver which would be big big plus..

But would this be ok or am I just shooting myself in the foot?

(PS: ideally I would buy something more interesting from cos but there is no cos here and I find it hard to imagine the clothes from the webpages - esp how they would look on me - I am kinda short and round so its tricky)

But main ques: will I look cheap?

Hobbs sale bargains (60 pounds and under)?

grey

more interesting

Henwelly · 23/04/2012 13:02

How tall are you? I have worked with a girl who wore the 2nd dress, it is pretty flairy and slim fitting at top so if you are short would make you look quite dumpy in my opinion.

Firsttimer7259 · 23/04/2012 13:06

Im short -5'4. I was wondering about that 2nd dress...I like the Hobbs grey one but worry I will not look good in the pleats - still heavy round the middle.

I think those dresses could potentially be unflattering especially not long after having a baby - they look very structured to me with unforgiving fabric.

Have you thought about a nice wrap dress in a soft stretchy jersey fabric with a jacket over the top and heels? That can look very smart and more flattering imo

Good luck with interview!

Firsttimer7259 · 23/04/2012 13:19

Baby is over 2 - I am just overweight now and have a diff body tthan I did before. I worry a jersey dress will be too 'soft'.

Bugger - I really ahve no clue what to do....think I may need to find some trying on time but no idea when...

Thanks all of you. Bottom line was the Next stuff didnt look good enough. Luckily your posts made me realise there are sales on so I made time this afternoon and tried on all of John Lewis. Ended up with this www.johnlewis.com/313126/Product.aspx -
and the matching jacket, plus new shoes.

So it was pricey but I will feel I am in with a shot at least.

And if i dont get it there will be a lot of baked beans in our house....sigh
Thanks fore suggestions - without these I may not have ventured forth today.

Hi!

Where are you based and what size are you? I have lots of work dresses and you can borrow one if I helps I can post to you? Got quite a few lk Bennett size 14 tailored and jersey plus few size 12s? Look at lk Bennett shimmer in black size 14/lyric size 14 in powder/ viola size 14 in navy and purple. Got a few others as well . No probs if it helps you out- I get a lot of stuff in sales and on e bay- love a bargain and would hate you to spend £££ if not necessary

mirpuppet · 25/04/2012 21:54

That is so sweet Tiddlymum. Also Thanks from a bystander. You have gone a long way to restoring my trust in human nature, having seen a lovely lady at school being on the receiving end of nastiness this week!

TIDDLYMUM · 05/05/2012 22:08

Only just seen this! The Op is a lovely lovely person and it was really nothing. It warms my heart to see some of the generosity of spirit on mums net. I think unless you are on here you don't understand. There's so much unpleasantness in the world but I regularly see posts on here which make me feel very humble. Happy BH weekend to you all xx

Firsttimer7259 · 15/05/2012 22:24

Just found out I didnt get it. Will try to get some feedback. V disappointed but I guess that is how it goes. It was v v nice however to get help over mumsnet like this - thats not usually how it goes. Thanks - esp tiddlymum x
