Epilator -4 months on and I'm just not getting the results I thought or hoped I would get

Am I doing something wrong?

I've been using it on my lower legs for about 4 months now. The first time it hurt like fuck a bit but now I can do it quite happily without wincing.

However the results (immediately after and with regards to regrowth) remind me of years ago when I used an electric ladyshaver ie. you don't get the immediate smoothness afterwards that you get with a wet shave, the removal can be a bit hit and miss/patchy and the regrowth is no slower than with shaving. Hmm

The only positive I can think of is its maybe not as prickly when it grows back although, because my hair is so dark, it still seems as visible.

Any advice?

Thanks

I Epilate and agree that once you get over the initial ouch it's fine (and no worse than waxing!)

I use it for legs, bikini tidy up and underarms. I do however, have fine, blonde hair, so can afford to leave it 4 weeks between epilations and it not be too noticeable.

I think the best way to get the super smooth feeling is to make sure that you're exfoliating really well, both before and after as that tends to stop the ingrown hairs.

I don't think I'm brave enough to try underarm and bikini line Shock -you must be hard as nails!

I don't think I'm getting ingrown hairs TBH.

Its just the patchiness and quick regrowth thats the PITA.

I've had mine for about 8 years. Exfoliate first, make sure you stretch the skin - especially when doing underarms etc, have elbow up as far as it goes.

The more you use it the less regrowth you will have, and I do not get bristles.

The trick is to use it after a shower and a really good exfoliating session with a sisal pad. Use it before regrowth appears, which for me is 5 or 10 mins weekly, but perhaps more (twice weekly?) if you've not used it before.

This gadget has saved me billions - I never did really pay for waxes, but even the price of razors and foam has been more than covered.

Make sure you move it really slowly, much slower than you would move an electric razor. Keep the skin taut. Also, epilating in a good light is essential to spot any patches missed.

I can do my legs without too much wincing, but bikini line requires a stiff drink beforehand.

i need to ask avid epilator peeps....is it worth spending more for one that removes really short hair?

mine is ok but it seems to miss tons of hair - but it only cost about £40. some now with good reviews cost over £100....is it worth the extra cost?
does anyone have any tales of comparison to impart before i spend some cash?

supernannyisace · 23/04/2012 10:01

I have been using mine for about 3 years now.

I must say it isn't as good as I expected, but is adequate - as I havemostly fineish blonde leg hairs so not so visible regrowth. If I leave it a few months weeks and then epilate the end result is fab - but if it is summer and I want to keep legs hair free things do get a bit bumpy and patchy.

I do armpits - 'tis ouchy - I had them lasered a few years back though and have only a few hairs - so it isn't too bad. I just do it once every few weeks, when I remember. Have done bikini line - again previously lasered, but grwoing back grr... much more ouchie. Draws blood sometimes.

I still prefer it to daily leg shaving.

It doesn't sound right that the regrowth would be as quick as with shaving Confused. Not sure what could be causing that, it should be similar to waxing in terms of regrowth.

I agree you don't quite get the completely smooth finish you would with a wet shave, I guess because the tiniest hairs are not being picked up. Do you have one with a 'headlight'? That helps a lot for seeing if any hairs have been missed, in which case you can go over the area again.

NorbertDentressangle · 23/04/2012 11:53

I'm wondering if I'm trying to do it too quickly and not pulling skin taut enough??

Next time I'll take my time and see if there's a difference.

I do make sure that I have good lighting and I wear my reading glasses!

You don't get the same super smooth legs sensation with an epilator as with shaving. Personally I hate the post-shave sensation, but I can understand that if you like it, the post-epilation sensation takes some getting used to.

I think epilators are fabulous for the not-very-hairy but that waxing/lasering is going to be a better solution for thick and/or dark leg hair.

I just haven't been able to keep it up with epilating my legs. Just so painful. But, oddly enough, I regularly do my underarms. First time, it hurt like anything. But now, I hardly feel anything. It's such a small area that I was able to persevere. So glad I did. Really smooth and hair-free under there now. Wish I could find way to do my legs (full leg including bikini line) that wasn't so painful. I possibly need to update my epilator as mine is quite old and I'm sure the technology has improved.
