Is it the case that they are now very unfashionable and to be avoided by the syle-conscious mumsnetter?

They're the devil's cheesewire. Evil, hideous instruments of torture.

picnicbasketcase · 20/04/2012 12:35

Does fashion really come into it with underwear? Surely it's hidden so it doesn't really matter what type it is. Unless you're a teenager who wears really low slung trousers where they stick out of the top, obviously.

luvviemum · 20/04/2012 12:39

picnic, you're right but I guess I like to feel I'm keeping up to date even though it's just underwear.

I'm 41 so defo no low riders when it comes to jeans etc but I do like to avoid VPL.

I just wondered if people still wore them as much these days and if not, what's the most current alternative?

I have noticed there seem to be less for sale than there used to be. I don't know whether that's caused by fashion itself or women just realising that they are indeed unflattering cheesewire as Bunny says. When buying matching sets of underwear, it used to annoy me that they had g-strings to match the bras, nowadays it seems to be more shorts-type shaped ones instead.

Bert2e · 20/04/2012 12:51

Laser cut no vpl hipster shorts for me!

Hanky panky thongs are fab - very comfortable and invisible under clothes

Pascha · 20/04/2012 13:06

I find hipster shorts that match bras are usually quite unflattering. It doesn't seem the same care has gone in to the bottoms as the tops. I find shorts in general go too low on the leg for my taste anyway. Too much material for my liking. My current favourites are these Very comfy and flattering.

ujjayi · 20/04/2012 13:09

I personally hate to see a thong exposed through very fine fabric, for example with white linen trousers. You are going to see your lingerie anyway through some fabrics so better to have full-ish bottom coverage than treat everyone else to the sight of cheese wire up your nethers.

I would rather wear brazilian cut knickers (M&S do a fab range). Very flattering and comfortable.

supernannyisace · 20/04/2012 13:11

oh no to G strings. too uncomfortable (especially for 6 mile run - ouchie!)

Big pants all the way :)

shorts are good, and like the link above.

taczilla · 20/04/2012 13:12

Marks and Sparks no VPL for me they are very flattering and I am a total convert. The look like the Bert2e's image in fact that is me Wink

Readynow · 20/04/2012 13:15

I've worn thongs for many years & find them very comfortable, although I do have a bit of an obsession with avoiding a VPL Blush The brazillian ones for sale currently in M&S are great as they give a bit more coverage & still no VPL!

luvviemum · 20/04/2012 14:21

Pascha, I am loving those ... a trip to M and S is defo on the cards and I think my old g - strings are about to hit the wheelie bin!!

DonInKillerHeels · 20/04/2012 14:29

They're fine if you're trying to avoid VPL in jeans or heavy trousers, but under fine fabrics going commando or french knickers would be my choice...

1gglePiggle · 20/04/2012 15:04

Anyone tried those ones that Mary Portas brought out? Kinky knickers?

Julialyne · 20/04/2012 15:09

I have converted to Brazilian knickers now. You still get no Vpl & they are more comfortable with a bit more coverage over the bum.
