Brands in the UK

I hope I am posting in the right place, and I hope this question does not appear ignorant or rude.

When posting on a different forum, I had mentioned that kids where I work currently (NY) wear a lot of Burberry, Prada, Moncler.

When I move (in 2 weeks) I was told not to have my kids wear Burberry as it's associated with Chavs. I am still unclear on what/who that really is, if that's offensive to a certain group or what. Perhaps that can be explained as well to me.

My hubbie is a UK citizen but left at a young age to grow up in Europe.

So, here I am shopping for rain gear for my kids and I have also received a ton of hand me downs for my cousins. I was very excited about my new wardrobe for the kids.

However, one includes a Burberry rain coat, some Hunter boots. In addition, a couple of items from Abercrombie and Hollister. I thought about that "Chavs"
comment.

The school my daughters will be attending does not have a uniform. I was wondering if someone could tell me what labels are acceptable and which ones are not.

Personally, I would just send them to school without concern about what they are wearing, but here in NY, and I am not sure in the UK...kids (especially girls) are very label conscious. Other girls can be extremely rude. Pathetic, certainly, but I don't think anyone wants their kids to be the outcast.

Could someone give me some advice on branding in the UK?

What's acceptable, what's not? Do kids in the UK care? That would be great.

I know there are similarities between the UK and US, but often times there are many things which are just culturally different.

Please enlighten me. I would just like to use the hand me downs I so graciously received and am hoping the UK (NW London) is not like NY in this respect.

Thanks,
Sameyeam

How old are your children?

Ranging from 1-11.

The hand me downs you've been given sound great, hunter wellies are seen as quite posh boots (in a good way) as for the Burberry comment I wouldn't give it too much thought (I'd avoid a Burberry baseball cap though, that's way more stereotypical than the raincoat! Do chavs even wear raincoats?

The Burberry check/plaid got copied to death and very badly a few years back. As far as I know, Burberry themselves use it very sparingly as lining or piping, so im sure your kids stuff will be very classy.

The 'chav' comment probably refers to certain groups of working class youth who went crazy on the checked gear, from caps to bags to prams to car interiors. You see less of it these days.
