What does your man wear apart from jeans or suit?

Sensible answers required!

Dh has never been exactly a snappy dresser but we now realise he has only jeans/cords in his wardrobe (fine for work, he's an engineer) and none of his suits fit. We've got a christening in a few weeks and no clue what to buy for him or where to look.
He's early 30s, gravitates to surf style if alloweds and quite solidly built. Trouser suggestions desperately requires! He does need A suit in his life, but not in the next fortnight so will prob put that off for a few months.

Suggestions please ladies. We're in the arse end if nowhere too so I tend to clothes shop for myself online - whistles, mint velvet etc, I dont even know what to google for him!

DP wears a lot of earthy colours. Trouserwise it's usually cords or low rise jeans, he works outdoors a lot so he buys his everyday work stuff dead cheap from the farm shops/warehouse (to leave himself more money to fuel his Paul smith addiction!) brands like dickies are fantastic for that sort of thing.
He wears those drop crotch trousers, but he's very talk, I think few people can get away with them!
For smarter stuff I would definitely try asos, fab delivery and if you're own brand stuff isn't your cup of tea then there's a great choice of high street and designer stuff too Smile

M&S trousers assorted, never jeans, rugby style collared tops.
Smart work trousers and a nice shirt for a christening, tie if the others are.

Nice shirts, designer ones bought in Debenham's sale.

Thanks ladies, was going to look at M&S - not too 'old'? ( I wouldn't buy clothes there).
Hadn't thought of asos, so thanks for that. What/where is dickies?

Any other style/ shop suggestions?

Try H and M, and Zara for men. DH is much more stylish than me Envy and mostly shops there. HM do chino type trousers in beige or bright colours which will boost your DH's fash status, also informal jackets and lovely light knits in Zara atm. Zara also good for shoes. Cos and Reiss worth a look if budget allows, but I'd def start with Zara's window display for inspiration Smile

PrimaBallerina · 19/04/2012 07:31

M&S is the suit trouser retailer of choice now they've got Jamie Redknapp on board.

PeelingmyselfofftheCeiling · 19/04/2012 07:46

I think bright coloured chinos might be a bit of a leap, need to break him in gently! Zara's a good idea. I used to like Cos and Reiss for me, but not sure theres one anywhere near here, need to see if I can buy online.

I can't tell how serious the redknapp comment is! Grin

Dickies are American I think, they do work clobber perfect for outdoor work. Eg, pair of utility jeans £9 and last a lifetime. They also do sone More fashionable studf in selfridges etc but for a "surfy" guy probably the right balance between fashion and comfort.

It's just an idea for cutting down your spending on work clothes, I know what its like!

We're going to watch this with interest! Any recommendations for a budget but attractive weatherproof mans coat? Please!!

What is it with christenings at the moment? If your question is for that event then there's no need for a suit as such - went to one recently and by no means were all men in suits and ties - in fact I'd say only the 50+ men were.

Slim-cut trousers and coloured chinos would seem to be a good choice for such a thing. Deepnds on how brave he is is style-wise - lots of unusual/bright colours (for men) at the moment. They're all over the place: H&M for men, Top Man, etc, etc. Not sure about how good their online services are.

Add a nice patterned shirt and jacket and you should be away.

HipHopOpotomus · 19/04/2012 11:26

DP has approximately 500 jackets (or maybe it just feels like it.)

He will wear shirts, with merino vest and/or cardigan over the top for work. He wears flat caps, cordroy jackets, pea coats, anything from Hackett or Barbour. Kind of preppy/classic style I guess.

In the summer he loosens up & will wear long shorts and linen short sleeve shirts or chinos from Gap, with linen shirts.

From a family of 6 boys - they are all snappy dressers. I feel very slap dash compared to DP.

Having said that he has one suit and I think it's by far the worst thing he owns. But he rarely wears it. He would LOVE to buy a new suit but can't afford to shell out for anything decent at the mo.

Hiphopx what does yours wear for trousers? And where does he shop that's more affordable? Think that might be an accessible type of cool!

Work shirts are from TM Lewin.

He has some Rockport trousers for work, jeans (lordy knows what brand), Gap chinos. Shirts - Hackett, Paul Smith ......

He is quite into "designer" brands, not for the sake of it but for style & quality. He really looks after his clothes so lots of them are really old, but as they were great quality to start with, and he takes care of them they still look great. I guess that is one of the advantages of a classic style.

To be honest I'm not at all involved with his clothes - these are merely observations from living with him. I do know that if we won the lottery he would spend up large on clothes - he loves them. To me it's a bit of a yawn!

He does shop at TK Max, and also Ebay (currently hunting Boden!!!!!! corduroy jackets with his brother for some reason). I know the merino vests/cardigans are from M&S AUtograph collection - again classic styling & no one knows it's from M&S.

HipHopOpotomus · 19/04/2012 14:39

Oh & he is fussy. He has a 'personal tailor' who mends, repairs and alters clothes for him. Bet SIL rues the day she met him :)

PrimaBallerina · 19/04/2012 19:25

Serious! Grin

DH has a Redknapp suit as do most of his friends (all early 30s). It's just a bit more modern tailoring and good quality for the price.

PeelingmyselfofftheCeiling · 19/04/2012 19:56

Thanks Prima, I just have that awful Thomas Cook ad stuck in my head! Grin

Any other tips from partners of stylish men or unstylish men with helpful partners

RubyFakeNails · 19/04/2012 20:17

DH wears suits for work which he has tailored and is all very snappy and dapper.

For free time clothes he shops at Oki-Ni, Zara, Reiss, Ted Baker, Nike, French Connection, Asos and lots of Japanese brands i don't know. He wears quite a lot of almost skinny Chinos, often in Navy. With shirts and desert boots, timberlands or trainers. He buys some bits from Ralph Lauren, mainly some checked shirts and knitwear but a few long sleeved polos. I guess he's what a lot of people would describe as urban though so he mixes and matches sporty bits in as well.
