Peeling lips

squoosh · 17/04/2012 16:34

Does anyone else have this problem. I use a Dr Perrcione lip balm (no petroleum jelly) to keep my lips moisturised. Depsite this the skin on my lips peels every other day. The only way to get rid of it is to put some on some lip balm off and then rub my peely flaky lips with a towel to exfoliate.

Then it starts all over again. I read online that it may be a vitamin B deficieny. Anyone have any tips?

lurking...same problem!

AgentProvocateur · 17/04/2012 16:37

I was just about to start a post with exactly the same problem. I've been using savlon on mine at night, which has been helping a bit, but I'd like to know if there's a wonder product out there!

ujjayi · 17/04/2012 16:54

Are you drinking enough water? My lips get very dry and chapped when my intake is low.

Wonder if other regular skin foods would help: Almonds etc?

Vitamin B deficiency is usually signalled by cracking in the corners of the mouth rather than lips peeling per se.

TooEasilyTempted · 17/04/2012 18:48

I don't know about lacking in vitamins, etc, but can highly recommend Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream.

Pannacotta · 17/04/2012 18:52

I use a lis salve by Dh Hauchka, which is expensive but is brilliant for this problem.
I buy it in John Lewis.

notactuallyme · 17/04/2012 18:53

aha! i can help!!! i had this exact same thing, tried all of the Boots range, and have discovered in my local chemist - flexitol lip balm. absolutely amazing. exfoliated my lips first with a facecloth but since then it has really worked. try it!

Mombojombo · 17/04/2012 19:10

If you can bear the smell/taste Elizabeth Arden does an 8-hour cream lip balm. Often comes free or on offer with other stuff (or occasionally in TKMaxx too). I swear it sorts me out in 24 hours but I can't stand the long so tend to wait til I really need it.

I haven't been able to wear lipstick for years because of this.

Not too bad recently though- have been using Tisserand orange oil (or something orangey)lip balm. It seems (fingers crossed) to be sorting them out.

All the others did nada- have tried every stick lipsalve in existence, cheap ones, posh ones.

Littlepumpkinpie · 18/04/2012 14:53

I use Carmex all year round never get chapped lips at all :)

Itsjustafleshwound · 18/04/2012 14:55

Carmex helps me

monkeysmama · 18/04/2012 14:58

If you want to really splash out the By Terry Baume de Rose from Space NK is fabulous. Lasts a year and has a natural healthy looking sheen. The green topped Nivea lip treatment from Boots is my next favourite.

Second lots of water.

slug · 18/04/2012 15:58

Waitrose baby bottom butter. Cheap. Effective

kerfuzzled · 18/04/2012 16:47

I had this problem too after suffering from a cold and the only thing tha stopped them peeling was nivea q10 lip effect. I think it's supposed to held fine lines but it stopped the peeling straight away after trying many other products. It was only £1.49 in Savers as well :)

kerfuzzled · 18/04/2012 16:48

sorry that should say help fine lines oops

kitkat1967 · 18/04/2012 16:59

Aqueous cream - put it on every night - cheap as chips - discovered this by accident but has worked brilliantly for several years now.

squoosh · 18/04/2012 17:44

Thanks for all the replies.

I definitely drink enough water and I've tried many of these products. Harumph. Maybe I'm just destined to be peely. The idea of giving up lipstick is pretty horrific!

Will try the Felxitol lip balm as their body oil spray worked a treat for me a few years ago.

Have the same problem and have lip balms all over the house and every handbag think the best are Elizabeth Arden 8 hour and my new personal favourite and also a lot cheaper which is Carmex moisture plus

LtheWife · 18/04/2012 19:15

Carmex. It contains salicylic acid, the same stuff they put in some facial peels. It doesn't actually have a peeling effect, it's a chemical exfoliant that helps speed up the shedding of dead skin. If you use it frequently enough for long enough it should really help. That said, I find the squeezy tube version useless. The small pots seem to work better, but for me the twist up stick version works best of all. I've not seen the stick version in shops over here, I tend to stock up in the US but someone is probably selling it on eBay.

PerUnaBomber · 18/04/2012 19:24

I had this fr months last year, tried every lip balm and cream (e45, sudocrem, yellow paraffin, nivea, you name it). Turns out I had a mild iron deficiency so combination of betnovate steroid cream in tiny amounts, ferrous sulphate tablets and liberal applications of Vaseline have sorted it out. I now have a terrible reaction to any lip balm (even the v expend ones - burt's bees, Liz Arden, by Terry, kiehl's) apart from good old Vaseline. Must have been to the doctor 6 times before we got the diagnosis an treatment right. Good luck, I know how crap having peeling lips is.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2012 19:53

Another vote here for Carmex. I wear it every day, and only the twist up version, because it goes on drier and much less goopy than the tube or the pot versions. I wear lipstick over it.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2012 19:54

Carmex 'click stick' pack of 12 from Amazon.

monkeysmama · 18/04/2012 23:13

The Kiehls one is crap imho.

HipHopOpotomus · 19/04/2012 07:25

Water water water. You know you are drinking enough when your lips are no longer dry.

squoosh · 19/04/2012 11:30

I definitely drink enough water so not that.

Twelve carmexes for £13, that's pretty good value and should last an age. I'll try that and if still peeling I'll look into iron deficency as per PerUNaBomber's experience.
