Home hair dye ...help for the cowardly

Have auburn hair with blonde highlights from 6 mths ago and a few greys :(
Have bought the blonde John frieda shampoo and conditioner as suggested on here and it is nice.....but think need to get rid of greys.....would like to be able to do at home as salon so expensive. In moment of boldness bought John frieda foam in 7g dark golden blonde which looks like it might be near to my natural colour which is what I want. Have never home coloured before -opened box and now panicked by having to mix things and fact it is permanent. Thinking for first attempt perhaps should try semi permanent but even these seem to last a long time? Any thoughts appreciated is it possible to get something that lasts for say 8 washes? I am terrified of botching it! Any thoughts on a similar semi permanent colour to the john frieda one? Do not want to end up with unnatural look ..any advice for the very cowardly first time colourist?

I tried experimenting with a semi-permanent a while back thinking it wouldn't take too long for the colour to fade if I didn't like it. Turned out it was much more permanent than I was expecting and the colour didn't suit me at all. Thank God for Boots ColourB4 - if you don't like your new shade, this stuff is brilliant for removing all traces of dye and restoring your natural colour. Good luck!

If your hair is auburn be careful about dying it blonde as the red in your hair could turn orange (speaks from experience!)
I use the Perfect 10 which is good but I dye my grey brown hair to a chestnut colour.
I would never risk dying it blond myself again!!!

Surely a home hair dye won't turn auburn hair blonde will it? Confused don't you need bleach for that?
Sorry not really helping since I don't really know but if you're going from dark to light I'd recommend going to a salon. Once you're back to your natural colour then you should be able to tackle the greys at home. I use home dye but only in the same shade as my own hair to add shine and to cover lighter hairs!! In fact off to do it now!

I think it's to do with the peroxide or something.
I died my hair blonde when I could t afford highlights and it went a hideous orange Shock
When I got an emergency appointment at the salon she said my hair had a lot of red pigment so it reacted with the peroxide!

Thanks for replies - the John Frieda colour although its called blonde is a warm golden blond and the photo on the packet looks like my sort of auburn colour which I have previously had finely highlighted with blonde - I don't want to go blonde I'd like to keep it auburn and natural looking. Sounds like the Boots ColourB4 is an essential to have at hand....
